Use Fire Transmutation when a boss can be ignited, but switch your timing and weapon emphasis for encounters built around parries, exposed weak points or traversal.
Valor Mortis has ten mandatory main bosses, ending with The Entity. The reliable combat rhythm is to break posture with sword attacks and parries, shoot weak points with firearms to refill nephtoglobin, then spend that resource on transmutations and finishers.

The combat loop that makes a boss build work
Valor Mortis divides boss damage into three interacting jobs:
- Swords and parries break posture. Hits and successful parries fill an enemy’s posture meter. When it breaks, use a heavy attack or finisher for the largest safe melee punish.
- Guns exploit weak points. Pistol shots are precise and economical; the Blunderbuss delivers a powerful close-range burst when a weak point is exposed.
- Weak-point hits refill nephtoglobin. Nephtoglobin pays for transmutations, so accurate firearm play sustains your strongest status and utility options. Kills often drop ammunition, allowing an aggressive loop rather than a purely defensive one.
This is why an all-melee build is usually less flexible than a sword-and-gun setup. You need the sword to create stagger opportunities, the Pistol to reach weak points or refill nephtoglobin from safety, and the Blunderbuss to capitalize on a large target during a short opening.

There is no published independent damage benchmark or universal best-in-slot ranking. Exact damage and community tier lists can change with patches, so the recommendations below are practical, broadly applicable priorities rather than a permanent numerical ranking.
Choose your build by the problem a boss presents
| Build axis | What it improves | When to prioritize it |
|---|---|---|
| Posture damage versus raw melee damage | Faster staggers and finishers, or stronger damage on ordinary sword hits | Choose posture investment when you can reliably parry or stay in melee range; choose raw melee damage when openings are brief and parries are inconsistent. |
| Weak-point firearm burst versus ammunition economy | Higher damage during exposed targets, or more shots and better restocking | Use burst for bosses with obvious weak points and short damage windows. Add ammunition and restock perks for long encounters or missed shots. |
| Fire/status pressure versus parry timing | Damage over time and resource-based pressure, or direct stagger from defensive timing | Fire is repeatedly useful, but some bosses are safer to solve with parries, lateral dodges or a specific weak point. |
| Survivability and comfort versus maximum damage | More health, endurance, blocking and safer healing, or faster kills | Use defensive upgrades while learning an encounter. Move toward damage once you can consistently recognize its attacks. |
Best general build for early chapters: the level-21 foundation
A level-21 progression is a practical first target because it unlocks the fifth upgrade row in the suggested beginner path. It gives enough health, stamina and defensive reliability to learn boss patterns without abandoning firearm damage.
Recommended level-21 upgrades
| Upgrade | Allocation | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Health | 4/4 | Survive a missed parry or an unexpected combo. |
| Maximum Endurance | 4/4 | Keep attacking, blocking and dodging through extended strings. |
| Blocking | 4/4 | Make ordinary sword defense more dependable while learning timing. |
| Melee Damage | 4/4 | Improve the sword punish after a posture break. |
| Airborne Aiming | 1/1 | Maintain firearm access during jumps and platforming sections. |
| Headshot Damage | 2/4 | Increase the value of accurate Pistol shots. |
| Ferrofluid Flask Refill | 1/1 | Reduce the cost of mistakes by restoring healing resources. |
If you are specifically building around Rapier parries, replace the two Headshot Damage points with Parrying Impact. That trade makes sense when your damage comes from repeatedly winning close-range timing exchanges rather than from frequent headshots.

Weapons and upgrade branches
Use the Saber as the default melee weapon. It is the more rounded option for blocking and parrying, making it forgiving while you learn the ten-boss campaign. Keep both the Pistol and Blunderbuss upgraded instead of treating firearms as emergency tools.
- Pistol: Ruthlessness, then Resourcefulness.
- Blunderbuss: Collateral Damage, then Iron Shower.
- Saber: Pursuit, then Careful Preparations.
The Pistol handles distant or elevated weak points and helps refill nephtoglobin. The Blunderbuss is for a large weak point at close range, especially after a boss finishes an attack or becomes stunned.
Early boss Ambers and quick slots
Equip Dominatus, ideally Dominatus II, and Volatile End for general boss attempts. Dominatus increases posture damage from critical hits; Volatile End makes weak-point shots explode and makes precise shots hit harder.
Use Marksman’s Bane instead if bullet parries are a central part of your playstyle. It lets you parry bullets and gain one Pistol round from each bullet parry. Iron Grip is the comfort choice when healing is frequently interrupted.

Late-game level-50 build for the full boss roster
At level 50, the suggested path becomes a complete sword-and-gun setup. Reaching level 50 unlocks infinite perks at the end of the skill tree, so the listed choices are a core package rather than a final limit on specialization.
Core level-50 priorities
- Maximum Health and Maximum Endurance.
- Parrying Impact and Blocking.
- Melee Damage and Airborne Aiming.
- Headshot Damage.
- Ferrofluid Flask Refill.
- Second-tier health and endurance upgrades.
- Ammunition Drop Chance and Ammo Restock.
- Physical Resistance.
- Some Melee Endurance Cost reduction.
Endurance Regeneration is an alternative if you focus on sustained posture breaks. Critical Damage is another damage-oriented alternative when you already parry consistently and want each critical opening to matter more.

| Category | Branch |
|---|---|
| Pistol | Ruthlessness > Resourcefulness > Robust Chamber > Ingenious Engineering > Tactical Reload > Automatic Mayhem |
| Blunderbuss | Collateral Damage > Iron Shower |
| Musket | Scope > Bayonet |
| Saber | Pursuit > Careful Preparations > Second Wind > Adrenaline Flourish |
| Rapier | Astute Quarta > Invigorating Seconda |
| Claymore | Willpower > Bulwark |
| Fire Transmutation | Fireworks > Wildfire and Unstable Blaze > Never-Ending Inferno |
| Stasis | Implosion > Eruption |
| Hex | Control and Drain > Expansion |
| Shield | Deflect > Absorb |
Late-game Ambers and items
The broad late-game Amber set is Dominatus, Volatile End, Iron Grip, Limit Break, Fire Breathing and Lunatic’s Grasp. This covers posture, firearm weak points, healing safety and additional offensive or utility options without requiring a single narrow gimmick.
Carry Stasis Whetstone, an Oil/Hand Grenade, Sands of Time and Special Cartridges. Keep the loadout adaptable: Stasis is essential for traversal or timing puzzles, while special ammunition is most valuable when a boss exposes a distant or protected weak point.
Saber or Rapier: which is better for bosses?
Choose Saber for a balanced first clear
Saber is the safer recommendation for most players because it supports blocking, parrying and ordinary melee damage without demanding that every exchange be perfect. It works naturally with Dominatus: parry or critical-hit an opening, break posture, then use a heavy attack or finisher.
Choose Rapier for a parry-centered build
Rapier is better when you already recognize attack timing and want to turn precise defensive play into offense. Its suggested Astute Quarta and Invigorating Seconda branches support that focused approach. Pair it with Parrying Impact rather than investing every early point in headshot damage.
Neither weapon eliminates the need for firearms. Rapier still benefits from Pistol weak-point shots, and Saber still needs the Blunderbuss for large, brief damage windows.

Do not force fire into every encounter. Sphinx makes fire less reliable than parrying and targeted shooting; Slaughtermill is primarily a stasis-and-traversal puzzle; and several fights reward a specific weak-point angle more than status pressure.
Boss-by-boss weapons, timing and build adjustments
1. General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer
Open with Fire Transmutation when your nephtoglobin is full, then place Pistol shots into his body weak points to fill stagger. Once he is stunned, use the stun attack rather than spending the opening on ordinary light hits.
In phase one, parry his sword and spear strings. In phase two, dodge the arm attacks instead of trying to parry everything, and kill summoned soldiers quickly with the Pistol or fire. The fight alternates between posture timing, weak-point shooting and add control, so the standard Saber/Pistol/Blunderbuss loadout is well suited to it.

2. Iron Marshall
Shoot the arena barrels to ignite Iron Marshall. After he is stunned or has completed an attack, move behind or alongside him and fire the Blunderbuss into the large back weak point.
Rapier pokes are also effective during close openings. Avoid firing the Blunderbuss at random while he is active; its value comes from waiting for the exposed back target and making the burst count.
3. Sphinx
In phase one, parry the claw swipes and answer with melee between attacks. Fire is less dependable here, so do not spend nephtoglobin simply because it is available.
In phase two, use the Pistol on the exposed face. A close Blunderbuss shot is worthwhile when the opening is safe. Avoid the bug attack that inflicts poison; preserving health and healing resources is more important than forcing an extra shot.

4. Slaughtermill
Treat Slaughtermill as a weak-point and traversal puzzle rather than a conventional sword duel. Use Stasis to stop the gears, grapple to reach exposed targets, and fire the Blunderbuss into the large central eye during its damage windows.
Airborne Aiming has particular value here because firearm access during movement can determine whether you reach a target before the opening closes. Save ammunition for the eye instead of wasting it on armored machinery.
5. Anna, the Bride Drowned in Tears
Dodge the opening unblockable attack. When villagers spawn, clear them before they surround you, then return focus to the Bride.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

If the Bride is near death, killing her ends the add wave. That means you should not risk a prolonged cleanup once her health is low; maintain enough stamina to evade the boss and finish her directly.
6. Justicar Aurelius
Parry the Eternal Guardsman-style sword strings and use Fire Transmutation plus melee hits between combos in both forms. The transformed phase introduces a delayed unblockable jump, so do not attack on autopilot after a familiar-looking string.
Saber is forgiving while learning the delay. Rapier is effective once you can distinguish the delayed jump from the ordinary sequence and reserve your parry for the actual impact.
7. Experiment 83
Dodge the long grab attacks and punish from behind. Firearm shots can hit two weak points, although the rear point is difficult to reach in narrow spaces.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
8. The Orphan
Fire Transmutation is effective in both phases. In the lower phase, parry the arm combos, but watch for the unblockable hit embedded in one string.
Dodge laterally through the poison beam rather than retreating straight backward. The lateral movement keeps you from being clipped by the beam while preserving a route back to melee range.
9. Nephtis Superioris
Parry the long sword strings to stagger him. Stay close when he reloads or heals so he cannot safely recover, but jump the Stasis waves instead of trying to block them on the ground.
In the later phase, dodge the flaming unblockable slash. This is a strong fight for Dominatus because repeated parries create the posture breaks that let your sword finish the exchange.
10. The Entity
The Entity’s long sword combos make parrying the central strategy. Use the Saber for a forgiving first attempt or Rapier if your timing is already reliable.
After it teleports, dodge the tentacles and ranged attacks before looking for your punish. When posture breaks, use a heavy attack or finisher immediately. Do not chase damage through the teleport sequence; the fight is won by surviving the ranged transition and returning to the parry rhythm.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preparation checklist before a boss attempt
- Upgrade the Saber or Rapier and keep both the Pistol and Blunderbuss current.
- Check that your Amber set matches the plan: Dominatus and Volatile End for general use, Marksman’s Bane for bullet parries, or Iron Grip for safer healing.
- Fill quick slots with Pistol Cartridges, a Hand/Oil Grenade and a Protective Vial early; use Stasis Whetstone, Sands of Time and Special Cartridges in late-game encounters that justify them.
- Enter with enough nephtoglobin to activate Fire Transmutation when the boss is vulnerable to burning.
- Identify the boss’s actual damage window before spending ammunition. A weak point that is visible but unsafe is not a real opening.
- During the attempt, alternate posture work and firearm work instead of exhausting one resource: parry or strike to build stagger, shoot weak points to refill nephtoglobin, then spend the refill on the next safe transmutation.
Common build mistakes and how to correct them
Trying to parry every attack
Some attacks are unblockable, delayed or better handled by a lateral dodge. Lothaire’s second-phase arm attacks, Aurelius’s delayed jump, the Orphan’s embedded unblockable strike and Nephtis Superioris’s flaming slash all punish automatic parry attempts.
Saving firearms for emergencies
Weak-point shots are part of the resource loop, not a last resort. Accurate Pistol fire refills nephtoglobin, while the Blunderbuss converts a short exposed-target window into meaningful damage.
Using fire without checking the encounter
Fire is broadly useful, but Sphinx and Slaughtermill demonstrate why a universal transmutation rotation does not exist. If a boss demands a parry, a gear stop, a grapple or a specific face or eye shot, use that solution first.
Investing only in damage
Maximum Health, Maximum Endurance, Blocking and Ferrofluid Flask Refill are not wasted points. They give you enough attempts to learn a boss, preserve stamina for chained attacks and make healing less likely to be interrupted. Shift toward Critical Damage or Endurance Regeneration after the encounter is consistent.
Bottom line: the most dependable boss setup
Start with Saber, Pistol and Blunderbuss; build health, endurance, blocking and melee damage; add Airborne Aiming, Headshot Damage and Ferrofluid Flask Refill; and equip Dominatus with Volatile End. Use parries and sword hits to break posture, Pistol shots to reach weak points and refill nephtoglobin, and Blunderbuss bursts only when a large target is safely exposed. Fire Transmutation is the best broadly reusable status option, but the ten bosses still require distinct answers: parries for The Entity and Nephtis Superioris, weak-point timing for Iron Marshall and Sphinx, traversal tools for Slaughtermill, and disciplined dodges for unblockable attacks.
