There is no single best weapon for every fight in STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl. For mixed travel and mid-range encounters, the Kharod is a versatile rifle; for mutants and tight interiors, the Ram-2 shotgun is a strong choice; and for long sightlines, the SVDM-2 offers a practical alternative to a heavier specialist weapon. Build a pair around the route ahead, then weigh ammunition supply, condition, upgrades, and carrying weight before heading out.
How to choose weapons for the Zone
Weapon choice is a trade-off, not a universal tier list. GSC says weapons handle differently depending on their build and range, and carrying too much can slow you down and leave you more vulnerable. Monitor condition and keep weapons maintained. GSC’s weapon-system overview explains these broad principles; the specific role picks below are editorial recommendations, not an official GSC ranking.

Compare options in your own save by asking:
- Range: Will most encounters happen in interiors, across open ground, or at long distance?
- Ammunition: Can you keep the weapon supplied on the route you plan to take?
- Handling and firing rhythm: Is recoil manageable, and does the weapon reward controlled shots or sustained fire?
- Weight and condition: Is its performance worth carrying, and can you afford to repair it?
- Attachments and upgrades: Does it support the sight, magazine, or other improvement you want?
Exact performance can also depend on difficulty, upgrades, and the weapon’s condition, so treat role recommendations as starting points and judge the options available in your save.
Best weapons by role
These recommendations reflect the role guide’s Update 2.0 coverage; none is a guarantee of superiority in every encounter. Pixel Twelve’s role guide supplies the recommendations and their trade-offs.
#1 Best Overall
- The first console reported version of the survival horror FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series that has sold over 15 million units worldwide
- Chornobili, its tragedy doesn't end
- Genre: Open World FPS
| Weapon | Best fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Kharod | All-round rifle for mixed travel and mid-range fights | Its balance of accuracy, handling, and attachment flexibility makes it adaptable; still check your ammunition and the needs of the next route. |
| Ram-2 | Close-range fights, mutants, and interiors | Pair it with a rifle if you expect open terrain, where a shotgun is less suited to distance. |
| SVDM-2 | Long-range encounters | A practical option when you want familiar 7.62×54 ammunition that the guide describes as easier to sustain than a specialist endgame weapon. |
| Gauss Gun | Maximum-power specialist option | High weight, scarce battery ammunition, and a slow firing rhythm make it less convenient for general travel. |
| Integral-A | Rapid-fire, shorter-range engagements | The small magazine favors controlled bursts over prolonged fire. |
| Rhino | Hard-hitting, relatively light backup | Its small cylinder limits capacity, and its ammunition can compete with other 9×39 weapons. |
| Fora-230 | Shorter-range travel when mobility matters | The Update 2.0 alternative prioritizes lightness over maximum reach or sustained fire. |
Choose by weapon class
- Pistols: Lightweight close-range backups; they can also be used with detectors.
- SMGs: Favor automatic fire and mobility over range.
- Assault rifles: Offer a balance of accuracy, velocity, and damage, but sustained fire consumes ammunition and recoil and hip-fire spread can affect control.
- Shotguns: Well suited to close spaces; their effectiveness drops at distance.
- Sniper rifles: Favor long-range engagements but are heavy and slower to reload.
- Machine guns: Support sustained fire at the cost of very high weight.
Where to get the Kharod and Ram-2
According to the role guide, Wreck at Yaniv Station sells the Kharod and Ram-2, while Bison at Enerhetyk Palace of Culture also sells the Ram-2. Trader inventories and prices can change, so check what is available in your current save rather than relying on an old price or stock report.
Attachments, upgrades, and repairs
Attachments and technician upgrades are separate systems. Sights, magazines, silencers, and under-barrel options are attachments: the weapon must support the part, and you must have it in your inventory. Check compatibility before buying or mounting anything, then use the weapon’s accessory selector or inventory to install it.
Technicians can improve traits such as accuracy or handling, open attachment paths, and repair damaged equipment. Some upgrades require blueprints found in the Zone. Read the effect and cost in the current technician menu before spending coupons; make sure the weapons you plan to take on your next trip are in usable condition.
Harpy at Yaniv is the technician named by the role guide for upgrades to both the Kharod and Ram-2. Availability, upgrade paths, and requirements should be confirmed in the current technician menu.

Weapon controls
Controls reported by the role guide are N to change ammunition type, B to change fire mode (hold for under-barrel mode), and H to hide or draw the weapon on keyboard and mouse. On controller, use the LB radial menu and its prompts for ammunition, fire mode, and under-barrel mode. Check the in-game control mapping for your platform and settings, as bindings may differ.
What Update 2.0 changes for weapon choices
The role guide lists four standard weapon platforms added with Update 2.0: the ARev assault rifle, GP3A DMR, SIC DMR (announced as SKP before release), and Fora-230 SMG. It also identifies the hidden unique Jagerblick variant of the ARev, a 3× scope for Western-bloc weapons, and a red-dot sight for Eastern-bloc weapons. GSC’s Update 2.0 announcement discusses a unique weapon variant and other update features, but does not name an official best weapon.
The role guide reports that Update 2.0.5 fixed attachment stashes appearing empty in certain older saves and addressed a Clapper shotgun choke/suppressor issue. It says patches 2.0.2 and 2.0.3 did not list weapon-role balance changes. Patch behavior can change, so consult current official patch notes and check how weapons and attachments behave in your game version.
