Which Wii U co-op game should you choose?
Super Mario 3D World: best all-around shared campaign
Super Mario 3D World is the straightforward choice when everyone wants to play as a character in the same 3D platforming adventure. Nintendo documents local play for up to four people and lists several compatible controller options, making it a flexible fit for a group with the right controllers on hand. The official player-count and controller details are on Nintendo’s multiplayer page.
New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U: best for side-scrolling and a support player
This Wii U bundle suits groups who prefer side-scrolling stages. Nintendo UK says up to four people can use Wii Remotes to run and jump through the levels. A fifth person can take a different role with the GamePad’s Boost Mode, placing platforms to help the other players reach hidden areas or take faster routes. That helper does not play a standard character, so this is a good fit if your group enjoys an asymmetric support role rather than expecting five equivalent platforming characters. Nintendo UK notes that Wii U eShop purchases ended on March 27, 2023. If you want this Wii U edition, look for a physical copy or access through an existing library.

Nintendo Land: best for a group that wants variety
Nintendo Land is a collection of attractions built around different play styles and asymmetric roles. GamesRadar’s 2026 retrospective describes 12 attractions and up to five players. It names Metroid Blast and Pikmin Adventure among its cooperative attractions, while Animal Crossing: Sweet Day and Luigi’s Ghost Mansion are competitive. How to tell co-op from other Wii U multiplayer
A multiplayer label alone does not tell you whether a game fits a co-op night. For this list, the key distinction is whether players share a challenge, take complementary roles, or compete against one another. Super Mario 3D World and the main character-player mode in the Mario U bundle center on a shared platforming challenge. The GamePad Boost Mode role is supportive but different from controlling a character. Nintendo Land varies by attraction, so check the specific mode rather than treating the whole collection as cooperative.

Other familiar Wii U games may suit a broader local-multiplayer list without being clear co-op recommendations. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U are better framed around competitive multiplayer. A Wii U manual index confirms the existence of manuals for titles including Pikmin 3 and Splatoon, but that alone does not establish a cooperative campaign or the details of a particular multiplayer mode. - Genre: Pick 3D platforming, side-scrolling stages, or a party collection according to what your group likes. If you want to avoid racing, these three recommendations give you non-racing choices.
- Player count and roles: The documented limits differ: up to four in Super Mario 3D World; up to four Wii Remote character players plus a separate GamePad helper in the Mario U bundle; and up to five across Nintendo Land‘s attractions, as described by GamesRadar.
- Controllers: Confirm the controllers you have before starting. Nintendo lists multiple compatible controller types for Super Mario 3D World; Nintendo specifies Wii Remotes for the main players in the Mario U bundle, with the GamePad used for Boost Mode.
- Co-op expectations: Ask whether everyone wants to control a character, whether one person is happy to support the others, or whether the group is comfortable switching between cooperative and competitive party modes.
