There is no single objective ranking of the best Windows 11 games, because the right pick depends on what you enjoy, whether you play alone or with others, and what your PC can run. What is consistent across 2026 recommendation lists is the breadth of genres on offer, from large action role-playing games to relaxed simulations that run on modest machines. This guide gives you three titles that current lists consistently name, explains what each suits, and sets out the checks you need to make before buying or subscribing. It is not a tested ranking, and it does not claim to be a complete top 20.
Three starting points and what each one suits
The table below covers the three games that appear in the 2026 recommendation material we reviewed, including a Steam-focused list and a GameSpot list. Each one stands for a different kind of player, so treat them as examples of audience fit rather than a ranking.

What Windows 11 adds, and what it depends on
Microsoft presents several gaming features as part of Windows 11. Each one has conditions, and none of them guarantees better performance or visuals in every title.
- Auto HDR requires an HDR-capable monitor and a supported game and graphics API.
- DirectStorage depends on compatible hardware and software. Microsoft’s description includes a supported NVMe SSD and a DirectX 12 GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support.
- Game Bar and windowed-game optimizations are available on Windows 11, but their benefit varies by game and setup.
Microsoft’s Windows gaming page, which is platform marketing rather than an independent benchmark, puts it this way: “Windows 11 does most of the optimization for you, but there are a few Settings you might want to double check to ensure you’re getting the best gaming performance from your system.” Treat that as a reason to review your settings, not as a performance promise.

How to check whether a game will run on your PC
A Windows 11 installation does not mean a game’s requirements are met. Xbox explicitly directs users to check each game’s details because specifications vary by title. Use this sequence before you buy:
- Open the game’s official store or publisher page and find its Windows minimum and recommended specifications.
- Check storage. If the page requires an SSD, as Larian does for Baldur’s Gate 3, a mechanical hard drive will not meet the requirement.
- Check your Windows version under Settings > System > About. Xbox says PC Game Pass requires Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or higher.
- Compare the graphics card, processor, memory and storage against the figures on the page. Note the game’s stated DirectX version.
- If the game is on Game Pass, confirm it is in the catalog for your region and plan before you rely on it.
Buying a game or using PC Game Pass
There are two main ways to play. You can buy a game outright from an official PC storefront, or you can play it through PC Game Pass. Xbox says the subscription catalog changes over time and that availability differs by region, plan and platform. A game that is in the catalog today may not be there later, so buying is the more secure choice for a game you intend to keep playing. Subscription access is worth checking for titles you want to try before committing.

Controllers and other input
A controller is optional. Microsoft describes controller play, racing wheels, VR headsets and mouse-and-keyboard play as Windows gaming options. Choose the input that fits the game. Action and platforming titles often suit a controller, while strategy and many role-playing games are normally played with a mouse and keyboard. Check each game’s supported input before buying any accessory.

- Genre: action, role-playing, strategy, simulation, relaxed or cozy, and multiplayer.
- Play style: solo, cooperative or competitive.
- Hardware demand: take the stated minimum and recommended specifications from each store page, and separate titles that need a modern GPU and SSD from those that run on modest hardware.
- Input: keyboard and mouse, controller, or a specialised device.
- Access: purchase, or a current subscription catalog for your region and plan.
