How should you configure Windows 11 for gaming?
Apply the settings in this order: establish the correct power mode, select the intended GPU, configure the display, test windowed-game optimizations, and then reduce background activity. Change one setting at a time when troubleshooting so you can identify which change affected frame rate, latency, image quality, heat, or stability.
| Setting | Recommended starting point | What it can affect | When to change it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Mode | On | Windows gaming-session behavior and resource prioritization | Disable only while testing a game-specific conflict |
| Power mode | Best performance when plugged in | Performance, heat, fan noise, and battery drain | Use Balanced for everyday laptop use or when temperatures and noise matter |
| Per-game GPU preference | High performance for a game that should use the discrete GPU | Which graphics processor launches the game | Use Let Windows decide if the correct GPU is already selected |
| Refresh rate | Highest stable rate supported by the display and connection | Responsiveness, motion clarity, and tearing behavior | Lower it if the connection, resolution, or game is unstable |
| Optimizations for windowed games | On initially | Latency and modern presentation features in compatible games | Test off for an individual game with stutter, glitches, or poor frame pacing |
| Auto HDR | Optional, if the display supports HDR | Color range and brightness in supported older SDR games | Turn it off for a game whose image looks inaccurate |
Should you turn on Game Mode?
Yes, keep Game Mode enabled as the default Windows 11 setting for gaming. Microsoft describes Game Mode as a gaming setting intended to optimize system performance during gaming sessions in its Windows Settings documentation.
Game Mode is a sensible default rather than a benchmark promise. Microsoft does not publish a universal FPS gain for Game Mode in the reviewed documentation, and the result can depend on the game, CPU, GPU, drivers, thermals, and other software running on the PC.
If a particular game begins stuttering after a driver, Windows, or game update, test Game Mode off as a troubleshooting step. Restore the default afterward if the change does not clearly solve the problem.
What power mode gives the best FPS?
Best performance is the Windows 11 power mode most appropriate when maximum performance matters, especially on a desktop or a laptop connected to AC power. Microsoft describes the mode as “Maximizes performance” in its power-mode documentation.
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode, then select Best performance when the option is available. On some PCs, the exact availability or label can vary by device configuration.
| Power mode | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Best performance | Gaming while plugged in and prioritizing performance | Higher power consumption; laptops may run warmer, use more fan power, and drain the battery faster when unplugged |
| Balanced | Everyday laptop use and gaming when heat or noise matters | Does not prioritize maximum performance as aggressively |
| Best power efficiency | Battery life and lower power use | Not the preferred starting point when maximum gaming performance is the goal |
Best performance is not automatically the best choice for a battery-powered laptop. If the laptop is hot, loud, or close to empty, Balanced may provide the better overall experience. A hot laptop can also reduce sustained performance through thermal limits, so monitor temperatures and clocks rather than assuming a more aggressive power mode will always produce better gameplay.

How do you make Windows 11 use your dedicated GPU?
To make Windows 11 use a dedicated GPU for a specific game, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and choose Save. Add the game’s executable with Browse if it is not listed. Microsoft documents the per-app GPU choices in its Windows graphics and windowed-game settings.
Windows may offer three choices: Let Windows decide, Power saving, and High performance. Choose High performance when the laptop has integrated and discrete graphics and the game should use the discrete processor.
This setting selects the graphics processor; it does not create additional GPU capacity. Selecting High performance cannot guarantee higher FPS if the game is CPU-limited, the system is thermally throttling, the discrete GPU was already being used, or another component is limiting performance. Confirm the result in Task Manager’s Performance tab while the game is running.
How do you set the highest refresh rate in Windows 11?
Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the relevant monitor, and choose the highest stable refresh rate available under Choose a refresh rate. Windows only lists values supported by the display and its current connection. Microsoft explains the setting and its limitations in its monitor refresh-rate documentation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Higher refresh rates can make controls feel more responsive and can reduce perceived motion blur and tearing, but the game must render frames quickly enough to benefit fully. A high-refresh monitor does not automatically increase the FPS produced by a PC. If the display supports variable refresh rate, Windows identifies that capability in Advanced display.
For readers upgrading hardware, a 144Hz gaming monitor with VRR support is an optional display choice to investigate—not a requirement for applying these Windows settings. Windows can expose only the refresh rates and VRR capabilities supported by the connected monitor, cable, port, and selected resolution.
Should Dynamic Refresh Rate be on or off for gaming?
Dynamic Refresh Rate, or DRR, is conditional rather than a universal gaming recommendation. Microsoft says DRR requires a VRR-capable display and a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz, and Microsoft warns that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games; the setting is documented in the same Windows refresh-rate guide.

Enable DRR if battery efficiency matters and your games behave correctly. Disable DRR if a favorite game appears capped at a lower refresh rate or otherwise behaves differently after DRR is enabled. Compare the result using the game’s frame-rate display or an appropriate monitor overlay rather than judging from the Windows setting alone.

| Display choice | Primary benefit | Possible limitation |
|---|---|---|
| High fixed refresh rate | Consistent high-refresh presentation when the system and game support it | Can use more power on a laptop |
| VRR | Helps the display adapt to changing frame delivery and can reduce tearing | Requires compatible display and connection; behavior varies by game |
| DRR | Balances refresh behavior and power use on supported displays | May limit the maximum refresh rate of some games |
Should Optimizations for windowed games be on or off?
Leave Optimizations for windowed games enabled initially, especially for a compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 game running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Microsoft states: “Optimizations for windowed games improves gaming performance for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed and borderless windowed modes.” The feature’s documented behavior is described in Microsoft’s Windows 11 support article.
Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics to find the feature. The feature moves compatible presentation from the older blt model to flip model, which can reduce frame latency and allow features such as Auto HDR and VRR on supported displays. The feature does not apply identically to every game: its documented scope is compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 titles in windowed and borderless modes.
Restart the game after changing the setting. To test a problem game, select the game in the Graphics list, choose Options, change the individual setting, and save it. Use an A/B test if the game shows stutter, visual glitches, worse frame pacing, or an unexpected change in behavior. Fullscreen games may not be affected in the same way because the feature targets windowed and borderless presentation.
Does Auto HDR improve FPS?
Auto HDR does not have a universal FPS benefit; Auto HDR is primarily an image-quality feature. On an HDR-capable display, Auto HDR can expand the color range and brightness of supported older SDR games, but the reviewed Microsoft documentation does not promise a frame-rate increase. See Microsoft’s Auto HDR guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To enable it, open Settings > System > Display, select the HDR-capable display, turn on HDR, expand the HDR section, and turn on Auto HDR. Availability depends on the display and Windows’ HDR support for that setup.
Auto HDR may improve how a supported game looks without improving how quickly the PC renders it. If colors, brightness, or contrast look wrong, turn Auto HDR off for that game and compare the result. Do not enable HDR solely as an FPS optimization.

What is Automatic Super Resolution, and can every Windows 11 PC use it?
Automatic Super Resolution is an optional feature for eligible hardware, not a universal Windows 11 setting. Microsoft currently documents Automatic Super Resolution for eligible Copilot+ PCs and the ROG Xbox Ally X, with compatible games and hardware requirements; Microsoft’s official documentation lists the supported conditions.
Automatic Super Resolution renders a game at a lower resolution and upscales the result to a higher output resolution. That approach addresses the trade-off between visual quality and frame rate, but it requires qualifying hardware and a compatible game. Do not search for or recommend the feature as a general optimization on every Windows 11 desktop or laptop.
How do you reduce background activity without breaking Windows?
Disable only startup applications and background processes that you recognize and do not need during gaming. Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps. Task Manager reports startup-impact categories such as Low, Medium, and High Impact; Microsoft documents the process in its startup-application guide.
Review the list for launchers, update helpers, cloud-sync tools, chat clients, and other software that does not need to start with Windows. Keep software that provides a function you need, and avoid blindly disabling security software, device drivers, audio utilities, or overlays. A startup label alone does not prove that an application harms in-game performance.
For a live diagnosis, open Task Manager while the game is running and inspect CPU, memory, disk, and GPU usage. Microsoft recommends reviewing resource-heavy processes and closing applications that are not being used in its Windows performance guidance. Close only applications you understand; ending an essential process can cause instability or data loss.
When should you use a clean boot?
Use a clean boot as a temporary diagnostic procedure when a game has unexplained stutter, crashes, or conflicts—not as a permanent gaming profile. Microsoft describes a clean boot as starting Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, which can help isolate background-software conflicts affecting applications or games.
After the clean boot, test the affected game. If the problem disappears, re-enable services and startup items in groups until the conflicting software is identified. Restore normal startup afterward so required utilities, security protections, and device features work normally. The clean-boot troubleshooting instructions and performance context are covered in Microsoft’s PC performance guidance.

What should you not change for a Windows 11 FPS boost?
Do not treat registry edits, third-party “debloat” scripts, blanket service disabling, or universal overlay removal as necessary Windows 11 gaming optimizations. The supplied Microsoft documentation supports locating and testing the settings above; it does not establish a safe, universal FPS gain from those speculative changes.
Do not promise a fixed FPS percentage from Game Mode, Best performance, a dedicated-GPU selection, Auto HDR, or a high refresh rate. These settings address different bottlenecks and experiences: GPU selection chooses a processor, power mode changes the performance-versus-power policy, refresh rate changes display presentation, and Auto HDR changes supported game imagery.
How do you test whether a setting helped?
Test one change at a time in the same game area, resolution, graphics preset, display mode, and power state. Record average FPS if available, frame-time consistency, input feel, stutter, GPU and CPU utilization, temperatures, fan noise, and battery drain. A change that raises average FPS but worsens frame pacing or heat may not be an improvement.

- Confirm the game is using the intended GPU in Task Manager.
- Use the same game scene or repeatable benchmark sequence.
- Compare the setting on and off, then restart the game when Windows instructs you to do so.
- Keep the setting only if the change improves the specific problem without unacceptable heat, noise, battery use, or image-quality costs.
The most reliable Windows 11 baseline is therefore conservative: Game Mode on, the appropriate power mode, the correct GPU, the highest stable refresh rate, windowed-game optimizations tested for compatible titles, and selective background-app cleanup. Hardware limits, game engines, drivers, thermals, and display capabilities still determine the final result.
Frequently Asked Questions
