Which Windows software should you use?
For local playback, OBS Studio is the clearest choice supported by the available documentation. Its Media Source loops one file; its VLC Video source can loop a playlist and optionally shuffle it. OBS sends the video feed to YouTube, but it cannot keep the stream running after the Windows PC, encoder, or network connection stops.
YouTube describes an encoder as a tool that “converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The computer running OBS is therefore part of the broadcast chain, not just a setup screen. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and the OBS Media Sources documentation.

Set up a looping YouTube stream with OBS
1. Enable live streaming on your channel
Open YouTube Studio and enable live streaming before the planned broadcast. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the day you intend to go live.
2. Add the right OBS source
- For one video: in OBS, add a Media Source, select the local file, and enable its loop control.
- For several videos: add a VLC Video source and create the playlist from your local files. Turn on Loop Playlist; turn on Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized order.
OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the source can work with the matching application architecture.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use YouTube’s instructions for the current setup flow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
4. Check the preview and go live
Start the stream from OBS, then check that YouTube’s Live Control Room receives the expected video and audio in its preview. When the preview is correct, use YouTube’s Go live control. Confirm that the video is actually repeating as intended before leaving the broadcast unattended.

What a 24/7 OBS setup depends on
A loop setting only repeats media; it does not make a broadcast self-sustaining. For a local OBS stream, the PC, OBS, source files, and internet connection all need to remain available. OBS’s source documentation describes playback controls, not a guarantee of unattended uptime, automatic recovery, or a particular PC specification. Plan for what happens if Windows restarts, OBS closes, the connection drops, or a file becomes unavailable.
Also plan recordings separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving beyond that threshold, so do not assume a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete replay. If you need an archive, arrange a separate recording workflow and verify its storage and duration limits.

Keep the stream safe and appropriate for YouTube
- Use media you have the rights to stream. A looping video can still trigger copyright claims or restrictions. Check rights for music, gameplay footage, and other included material before broadcasting.
- Do not treat looping as a shortcut to monetization. YouTube’s monetization review considers channel content and policy compliance; repeating material does not itself establish eligibility or make reused material original.
- Protect your stream key. Do not publish it in a video, screenshot, chat, or public document. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Check the channel’s live-stream access and current YouTube rules. Eligibility and policies can change, so confirm the requirements shown in YouTube Studio rather than relying on an old setup guide.
Common problems and fixes
The VLC Video source is missing
Install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS. A 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS after installation and add the source again.
The video plays once and stops
Check that the Media Source’s loop option is enabled. For a playlist, verify Loop Playlist is enabled in the VLC Video source; shuffle is a separate option and does not enable looping.

YouTube does not receive the OBS stream
Check that the stream URL and key were copied from the intended YouTube Studio stream and entered correctly in OBS. Confirm the channel has live streaming enabled; first activation may take up to 24 hours. Keep the key private, and replace it if you suspect it has been exposed.
The stream stops when the PC or connection goes offline
That is expected for a local encoder: OBS cannot transmit after the machine or its network connection is unavailable. Restore the PC and connection and restart the encoder, or move playback and delivery to a cloud service if the stream needs to continue without the home computer.
