Music can make a livestream feel more deliberate, fill quiet gaps, and support the mood of a game. But a track is only a sound choice if you also have the rights for the live broadcast—and, if you keep it, the recording and clips. A “free” label, credit line, purchased download, or personal music subscription does not by itself grant those rights.
Why add music to your livestream?
Creators use music to shape atmosphere, cover pauses, and give a stream a consistent feel. For gaming streams, background music can also help distinguish the creator’s commentary from the game audio. Those are creative benefits, not copyright permissions: the music still needs to be cleared for the way and places you plan to use it.
Can I play music on my livestream?
Yes, if you own the necessary rights or have permission that covers the use. YouTube describes safe music as music in the public domain or music used with permission from the copyright owner. A track being advertised as “free,” or adding a credit line, does not itself stop Content ID from flagging it. YouTube’s guidance on finding safe music recommends checking the actual terms and permitted uses.
For recorded music, Twitch’s November 11, 2020 guidance put it plainly: “Most importantly, don’t play recorded music in your stream unless you own all rights in the music, or you have the permission of the necessary rights holder(s).” The legal scope of a permission depends on its terms and jurisdiction.

What music can I use on Twitch or YouTube?
Start with the platform and the content you want to retain. A license may allow a live broadcast on one service but not another, or allow live use but exclude monetized VODs or clips. Before using a track, check the written terms for each intended use rather than relying on a library’s “stream safe” description alone.
Options to evaluate
| Music source | What to check | Practical limit |
|---|---|---|
| Music you composed and control | Confirm that you control the relevant rights, including any samples, collaborators, or recordings. | Only rights you actually control are covered. |
| Public-domain music | Verify the status of both the composition and the particular recording in the places where you will stream. | A public-domain composition does not automatically make every recording of it public domain. |
| YouTube Audio Library | Review the track’s terms and attribution requirements, and confirm the use is on YouTube. | YouTube describes its Audio Library as providing copyright-safe music and sound effects; that statement is not a blanket clearance for use on Twitch or other platforms. YouTube Audio Library and safe-music guidance |
| YouTube Creator Music | Check availability in your region and the terms for the monetized video use. | YouTube says Creator Music is available in certain regions and concerns monetized videos; do not assume it clears every live use, VOD, clip, or other platform. YouTube’s guidance |
| Third-party music library | Read its current written license for platform coverage, live use, VODs, clips, monetization, territory, duration, and channel allowlisting. Keep the license and proof of purchase or subscription. | Terms vary by provider and can change. Verify current scope before relying on an older recommendation. |
| Game soundtrack | Read the game’s official EULA for streaming and music clauses; use a music-off or streamer setting if available when unclear. | Permission to stream gameplay does not necessarily establish permission for every song included in the game. |
Twitch’s official 2020 post named Soundtrack by Twitch, Soundstripe, Monstercat Gold, Chillhop, Epidemic Sound, and NCS as rights-cleared alternatives at that time. Treat these as historical leads, not confirmation that a service is currently available or that its present license covers your platform, VODs, clips, or monetization.

Use a rights checklist, not a “free” label
- Does the license expressly permit livestreaming on each platform you use?
- Does it cover saved VODs, clips, highlights, and other archived versions?
- May you monetize the live stream and its recordings?
- Are there territorial, duration, attribution, or subscription-status limits?
- Does the rights owner require your channel to be allowlisted to avoid automated interruption or claims?
- Can you retain a copy of the license and follow a stated process to resolve a match or claim?
Will music get my stream muted or interrupted?
It can. YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license does not always prevent that automated response: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to an allowlist. If the owner or license provider requires allowlisting, arrange it before going live and keep confirmation with your license records. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Turning off VODs does not grant permission to play music live. Nor does credit, buying a track, or paying for a personal streaming service. Those facts may be relevant to your own arrangements, but they do not by themselves authorize a public broadcast.

Can I keep the VOD or clips?
Check archival rights separately from live-stream rights. YouTube says Content ID claims can be made after a livestream ends if the creator archives it. Before streaming, confirm that the license covers saved VODs and clips, any monetization, and the territories where viewers may access them. Also check whether allowlisting applies to the channel or to particular content. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains both live matching and claims on archived streams.
A short pre-stream music check
- Choose the use: list every destination platform and decide whether you will keep the VOD, make clips, or monetize either.
- Read the license: confirm that it covers those platforms and uses, plus any territory, attribution, or subscription conditions.
- Check game music: review the game’s official EULA and enable a music-off or streamer setting if the game’s soundtrack terms are unclear.
- Arrange allowlisting: ask the rights owner or provider whether your channel must be allowlisted, and do so before the broadcast if required.
- Save proof: retain the written license, relevant terms, and any allowlisting confirmation where you can retrieve them if a claim or interruption occurs.
- Test the setup: if practical, check the intended audio mix and recording workflow before a public stream; a clean test does not replace permission.
What Twitch’s older figures do—and do not—show
In its November 11, 2020 post, Twitch said that more than 99% of the music-related notifications it analyzed for late May through mid-October targeted tracks played in the background of streams. It also said there had been fewer than 50 music-related DMCA notifications each year before May 2020. These are historical figures published by Twitch, not current claim rates or a measure of present platform risk. They illustrate why background music deserves a rights check, but cannot predict whether a particular track will be claimed.
