Best WooCommerce Payment Gateways in 2026: WooPayments vs Stripe, PayPal and Square

WooPayments, Stripe, PayPal Payments and Square each suit a different WooCommerce operation. Compare country eligibility, real transaction costs, payment methods, subscriptions, checkout behavior and dashboard requirements before choosing.

For most new WooCommerce stores, start by comparing WooPayments, Stripe for WooCommerce, PayPal Payments and Square for WooCommerce. There is no universally cheapest or best gateway: the right choice depends on your merchant country, settlement currency, customer payment methods, recurring-billing needs, dispute exposure, checkout design and the operational dashboard your team needs. WooPayments is the most deeply integrated WooCommerce-native option, while direct Stripe, PayPal and Square can be better fits when you need their particular processor controls, account checkout or online-and-in-person tooling.

Quick verdict: which gateway fits which WooCommerce store?

Choose the gateway that covers your legal entity and customers first; compare fees and features only among gateways you can actually open in your country. The four leading options solve different operational problems:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Gateway Best fit Subscription position Important qualification
WooPayments A store that wants payments, orders and payouts managed inside the WooCommerce workflow, with supported local methods. Confirm the current WooCommerce capability matrix for your payment method and subscription setup. Availability and fees vary by merchant country; merchants do not receive the full Stripe dashboard.
Stripe for WooCommerce A store that wants Stripe’s processor ecosystem, wallet support or a direct Stripe operating model. WooCommerce lists Stripe as subscription-compatible, but capabilities vary by payment method. Verify the current extension compatibility, country coverage, commercial terms and recurring-payment requirements.
PayPal Payments A business whose customers expect PayPal account checkout, or one that wants PayPal alongside card processing. WooCommerce lists PayPal Payments as subscription-compatible; confirm the exact method and account rules. Payment methods, country rules and pricing depend on the merchant account and market.
Square for WooCommerce A retailer that needs one ecosystem for online and in-person payments or catalog synchronization. WooCommerce lists Square as subscription-compatible, subject to method-specific limits. Country availability, point-of-sale requirements and supported methods should drive the decision.

A second gateway is worthwhile only when it adds meaningful customer coverage or resilience. Every extra integration also adds plugin updates, webhook monitoring, refunds to reconcile and another set of credentials to secure.

What a WooCommerce payment gateway actually controls

A gateway is the integration between your WooCommerce checkout and a payment processor. It presents eligible payment methods, sends authorization requests, receives approval or decline responses, and returns status updates to the order. It also determines how refunds, saved payment methods, recurring charges, disputes and payouts appear in your day-to-day operations.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

WooCommerce gateways are plugin integrations built against the WooCommerce Payment Gateway API. That means the processor’s headline price is only one part of the decision. The quality and maintenance of the extension, compatibility with your current WooCommerce stack, checkout behavior, webhook handling and support process can determine whether a theoretically inexpensive gateway remains inexpensive to operate.

  • Customer side: card fields, wallets, bank-transfer options, buy-now-pay-later methods and whether the shopper stays on your site or is redirected.
  • Billing side: authorization, capture, refunds, saved payment methods, recurring renewals and failed-payment handling.
  • Operations side: payout timing, reporting, dispute workflows, tax and reconciliation exports, user permissions and access to processor controls.
  • Risk side: country eligibility, currency conversion, international-card treatment and the fees or evidence requirements attached to disputes.

WooPayments: the WooCommerce-native choice

WooCommerce positions WooPayments as “the only payment method designed exclusively for WooCommerce.” Its main advantage is a unified WooCommerce workflow rather than a separate processor experience: payment activity, orders and related management are intended to be handled together.

When WooPayments makes sense

  • Your team wants the deepest integration with the WooCommerce administration experience.
  • You need local payment methods that WooPayments supports in your merchant country.
  • You prefer one WooCommerce-oriented workflow for payment activity and order operations.
  • You do not require every control available in a full, standalone Stripe account.

Fees are country- and transaction-specific

WooPayments publishes country-specific fee tables rather than one worldwide rate. A named 2026 example is 1.50% + €0.25 for card payments in several European markets. That figure is not a global WooPayments price and should not be applied to another country, card type or currency without checking the applicable table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The published tables can also include international-payment charges, currency-conversion charges and dispute fees. Build your estimate from the transactions you actually expect: domestic cards, cards issued abroad, converted currencies, refunds and disputes may all affect the effective cost.

The dashboard trade-off

WooPayments documentation states that its merchants do not have access to the full Stripe dashboard. If your finance, risk or engineering team depends on Stripe’s complete processor controls, compare the direct Stripe integration instead of assuming WooPayments provides an identical back office.

Questions to answer before enabling it

  1. Is WooPayments available to the legal entity and merchant country that will receive settlement?
  2. Which currencies and local methods are available for that country?
  3. What are the domestic, international, conversion and dispute charges for your expected mix?
  4. Does the current subscription and saved-payment-method behavior meet your renewal requirements?
  5. Can your team operate effectively without the full Stripe dashboard?

Stripe for WooCommerce: direct processor control

Direct Stripe integration is the alternative to WooPayments when you want to operate through Stripe’s own processor ecosystem. Wallet support and a direct Stripe operating model are common reasons to choose it.

Strengths

  • A store can use Stripe’s processor ecosystem rather than a WooCommerce-only management layer.
  • Wallet support can reduce checkout friction for customers who already have a preferred wallet.
  • Teams that need Stripe’s complete controls should compare the direct integration because WooPayments does not expose the full Stripe dashboard.
  • WooCommerce lists Stripe as supporting subscriptions, although the exact capability depends on the payment method and recurring-billing setup.

Checks before installation

Confirm that the official Stripe extension supports your current WooCommerce version and checkout configuration. Verify merchant-country availability, required wallets and local methods, saved-payment behavior, renewal requirements, refund handling and the commercial terms that apply to your Stripe account. Do not assume that Stripe pricing, payout behavior or dashboard access is identical to WooPayments; they are different integrations and should be priced and operated separately.

PayPal Payments: account checkout plus cards

PayPal Payments is the natural candidate when your audience expects to pay from a PayPal account or when you want PayPal available alongside card processing. Showing a familiar account-based option can be useful for shoppers who do not want to enter card details, while card processing serves customers who prefer a traditional checkout.

Subscription capability

WooCommerce’s subscription matrix lists PayPal Payments as subscription-compatible. “Compatible” does not mean every PayPal method has identical recurring behavior: confirm the payment method, merchant account, country rules, authorization model and how failed renewals are handled before promising a specific subscription experience.

Commercial and country checks

  • Confirm that the PayPal account can be opened and settled for your business’s country and legal entity.
  • List the exact PayPal and card methods you intend to show; availability can differ by market.
  • Price domestic transactions, international transactions, currency conversion and disputes using the terms for your account.
  • Decide where refunds, disputes and payout reports will be managed and how those records will reconcile with WooCommerce orders.

Square for WooCommerce: online and in-person operations

Square for WooCommerce is aimed at businesses that need an online store and a physical point-of-sale operation in the same ecosystem, or that want catalog synchronization between those channels. That makes it a different proposition from choosing a gateway solely for online card acceptance.

When the Square model is useful

  • You sell through both a WooCommerce storefront and in-person locations.
  • Keeping products and inventory aligned across online and physical operations is a priority.
  • Your staff benefits from one operational system for checkout activity across channels.

Subscription and method limits

WooCommerce lists Square as subscription-compatible, but the usable behavior still depends on the payment method, merchant country and account configuration. Before launch, test a complete renewal cycle and verify how refunds, cancellations and failed payments move between Square and WooCommerce.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Square availability and pricing are not universal. Confirm that the service supports your country, settlement currency, point-of-sale requirements and required customer methods before treating catalog synchronization as a deciding advantage.

Country availability comes before feature comparisons

A gateway that looks ideal on paper is unusable if it cannot onboard your legal entity or settle funds in your market. Check the merchant-country list for each candidate before installing extensions or redesigning checkout.

  1. Identify the country of the legal entity that will hold the merchant account, not merely the country where customers browse.
  2. Confirm that the gateway accepts that entity and supports the bank account and settlement currency you need.
  3. Check which payment methods, wallets and recurring features are available in that country; a gateway may support a feature globally but not locally.
  4. Verify whether cross-border transactions or currency conversion apply when customers and settlement accounts use different currencies.
  5. Record the date of your eligibility check, because country coverage and commercial terms can change.

Country availability can eliminate an option before fee arithmetic begins. It also explains why recommendations from another merchant or another region may not transfer to your store.

How to calculate the real processing cost

Start with the gateway’s published rate for your country, then model the transaction categories that your store actually generates. A single domestic-card example cannot represent a business with international buyers, multiple currencies, subscriptions and frequent disputes.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Cost component What to include in your model Why it changes the result
Domestic card processing Base percentage and fixed amount for cards issued in your market. Small orders are affected more by the fixed component; large orders are affected more by the percentage.
International cards Any additional charge for cards issued outside the merchant country. The share of overseas customers can materially raise the blended rate.
Currency conversion Conversion charge when the transaction currency and settlement currency differ. Stores selling in several currencies may pay this on a substantial portion of sales.
Disputes Dispute fees and the operational cost of preparing evidence. A low base rate can be offset by a high dispute volume or weak evidence workflow.
Subscriptions Any method-specific restrictions, surcharges or failed-renewal handling costs. Recurring revenue depends on successful renewals, not only the first authorization.
Operational work Plugin maintenance, reconciliation time, support and additional gateway administration. A second gateway can add resilience but also increases ongoing labor and failure points.

For a useful comparison, calculate a blended effective rate for at least three scenarios: mostly domestic cards, a mixed domestic/international audience and a subscription-heavy mix. Keep the country and date beside every figure. The 1.50% + €0.25 WooPayments example is a 2026 rate for several European markets, not a default for all merchants.

Payment methods and checkout behavior

List the methods your customers already use before choosing a processor. Cards may be essential, but a market can also expect wallets, bank transfers or buy-now-pay-later options. Availability is gateway-, country- and sometimes account-specific.

On-site versus redirect checkout

Some integrations keep the shopper on your checkout page, while others send the shopper to a hosted or account-based flow. The choice affects trust, mobile usability, saved payment methods, error recovery and how much of the checkout you can customize. Test both the initial payment and the return path after authorization; a technically successful payment that leaves an order stuck in “pending” is still an operational failure.

Express wallets

Wallet buttons can shorten the path for returning customers, but they may have different address collection, shipping-selection and order-confirmation behavior from the standard card form. Confirm that the gateway’s wallet implementation works with your theme, checkout blocks or extensions before advertising it as a conversion feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subscriptions, saved methods and recurring payments

Recurring billing requires more than accepting the first card payment. The gateway and the WooCommerce subscription layer must be able to store or reference a payment method, request a renewal, report success or failure, and update the order status correctly.

WooCommerce’s capability matrix marks Stripe, PayPal Payments and Square as supporting subscriptions. Their capabilities still differ by gateway and payment method, so treat that designation as the starting point for testing rather than a guarantee that every plan, wallet or local method will renew identically. WooPayments subscription support should be verified against the current capability information for your exact setup.

Minimum recurring-payment test

  1. Create a low-value staging subscription using the payment method you intend to sell.
  2. Complete the initial authorization and confirm that the WooCommerce order and subscription records show the expected status.
  3. Trigger or wait for a renewal in the gateway’s test mode, then verify the renewal order, receipt and stock or access entitlement.
  4. Simulate a failed renewal and confirm the retry, customer notification, cancellation and account-status behavior.
  5. Issue a refund and cancel the subscription, checking both the processor record and WooCommerce history.

Dashboard, payouts and reconciliation

Choose the operating model your finance and support teams can maintain. A WooCommerce-centered dashboard can reduce context switching, while a processor dashboard may expose deeper controls for risk, reporting, users, payouts and disputes. WooPayments explicitly does not provide merchants with the full Stripe dashboard; teams that require those controls should factor that limitation into the decision.

Plugin quality and WooCommerce compatibility

Payment plugins sit on a sensitive path: checkout, order creation, customer accounts, refunds and webhooks. Review the extension’s compatibility with your current WooCommerce version, WordPress environment, checkout implementation and other payment or subscription extensions. Maintenance quality matters as much as the initial feature list.

Compatibility checklist

  • Use the current official extension for the gateway and keep a record of its supported WooCommerce stack.
  • Check compatibility with the checkout experience you use, including block-based or customized checkout where applicable.
  • Verify webhook endpoints, signing secrets and notification delivery before accepting live orders.
  • Test refunds, partial refunds, cancellations, renewals and order-status transitions.
  • Monitor extension updates and processor notices; payment APIs can change independently of your theme.

A practical selection process

  1. Shortlist by eligibility. Remove any gateway that cannot onboard your merchant country, legal entity, bank account or settlement currency.
  2. Define the payment mix. Estimate domestic cards, international cards, wallets, bank transfers, buy-now-pay-later methods, subscriptions and expected disputes.
  3. Map required methods. Confirm that each gateway supports those methods in your country and checkout configuration.
  4. Model total cost. Apply country-specific base rates plus international, conversion, dispute and any recurring-payment charges. Include reconciliation and support labor.
  5. Choose the operating dashboard. Decide whether your team needs WooCommerce-native management or the deeper controls of a direct processor account.
  6. Test on staging. Exercise successful payments, declines, refunds, webhooks, renewals, failed renewals and order-status changes.
  7. Launch with monitoring. Watch authorization rates, pending orders, webhook failures, refunds and payout reconciliation during the first live period.
  8. Add a second gateway only for a reason. Use one when it adds a payment method, country coverage or resilience that justifies another integration and reconciliation process.

Common failure modes and fixes

The gateway is unavailable during onboarding

Recheck the merchant-country and legal-entity requirements. Do not substitute a different country or bank account to force approval; choose a gateway that legally supports the business or restructure the payment setup with professional advice.

The displayed rate is lower than the invoice total

Separate domestic, international and converted transactions, then add dispute fees and any subscription-related charges. A blended monthly rate is meaningful only when the transaction categories are labeled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Renewals remain pending or fail silently

Inspect webhook delivery, saved-payment authorization and the specific payment method used for the subscription. Reproduce the renewal in staging, verify order-status transitions and confirm that customer notifications and retries are enabled as intended.

Refunds do not reconcile

Match the WooCommerce refund record to the processor transaction and payout report, including partial refunds and fees. Document which system is authoritative for each field so staff do not issue duplicate refunds.

Checkout works for cards but not wallets

Check the wallet’s country eligibility, domain or account verification requirements, theme and checkout compatibility, and the return URL after authorization. Test on the devices and browsers your customers use.

Recommendations by store profile

WooCommerce-first small business

Begin with WooPayments if it is available to your entity and its supported methods match your customers. Its WooCommerce-native workflow can reduce administration. Confirm the country-specific fee table and whether the dashboard limitation affects your finance or risk processes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

International store with processor-oriented operations

Compare direct Stripe with WooPayments using your actual countries, currencies, wallets and reporting requirements. Direct Stripe is the more natural candidate when access to the processor ecosystem and full controls matters, but its extension compatibility and account terms still require verification.

Brand whose customers ask for PayPal

Evaluate PayPal Payments alongside card processing. Verify account eligibility, exact methods and subscription behavior in your market rather than assuming that PayPal account checkout and every card or recurring feature are interchangeable.

Retailer combining web and physical sales

Evaluate Square for WooCommerce when online-and-in-person operations or catalog synchronization is central. Confirm country support, point-of-sale requirements and the subscription and refund flows before migration.

Subscription-focused store

Start with the gateways WooCommerce identifies as subscription-compatible—Stripe, PayPal Payments and Square—then test the exact payment method, renewal, retry, cancellation and refund path you will sell. Verify WooPayments separately against the current capability information rather than inferring support from its WooCommerce integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Launch checklist

  • Merchant country, legal entity and settlement currency confirmed.
  • Required cards, wallets, bank methods and buy-now-pay-later options confirmed for that country.
  • Domestic, international, conversion and dispute costs modeled with dated rates.
  • Subscription, saved-payment and failed-renewal behavior tested for every plan type.
  • Checkout, redirects, wallets, refunds and webhook events tested on staging.
  • WooCommerce order statuses match processor outcomes.
  • Payout and fee reports reconcile with accounting records.
  • Support staff know where to find transactions, issue refunds and answer disputes.
  • Extension updates, credentials, webhook secrets and incident ownership documented.
  • A second gateway is added only if its extra coverage or resilience outweighs integration overhead.
