Start with SLATE. It tests five different letters, includes common consonants as well as A and E, and is a strong all-purpose Wordle opener for ordinary play. CRANE, CRATE, TRACE, STARE, and RAISE are also excellent choices. None guarantees a solve, and the best word for your streak depends on whether you value broad letter coverage, maximum information, familiar vocabulary, or a specific hard-mode strategy.

SLATE has three traits that make it a particularly dependable first guess:
#1 Best Overall
- Guess the Secret Word: Inspired by the most popular online word game that broke the internet, 5-Letter Wordlet is the wordle style party game families and friends can enjoy together.
- Play All Day: With 5-Letter Wordlet, the fun never ends, as players aren't limited to one word puzzle a day like the online version. Unlimited play with dry erase guessing boards and markers means unlimited fun!
- Grab and Go Game: 5-Letter Wordlet's game boards are specifically designed to pick up and hold.
- Party Game Night: Make it a party game night with 5-Letter Wordlet, the wordle based game that is great for evenings with friends and family, game nights, or date nights.
- What's Inside: The 5-Letter Wordlet Word Party Game is loaded with 3 Dry Erase Guessing Boards, 3 Dry Erase Markers, 90 Guessing Chips, 200 Secret Words, and Instructions to get your game night started in five minutes or less
- It has five unique letters. A first guess with no repeated letters can test five possibilities at once. That usually provides more coverage than spending two positions on the same letter.
- It combines common consonants and vowels. S, L, T, A, and E appear frequently in Wordle’s curated answer pool, although answer-list frequency is not exactly the same as frequency in ordinary English.
- Its letters occupy useful positions. It is not enough for a word to contain frequent letters. Their positions matter too. E, for example, is especially useful in the fourth or fifth position in many five-letter answers, while A and T can produce valuable green or yellow information in the middle and later positions.
SLATE is also a normal, easy-to-type word. That matters more than it may seem: a theoretically powerful guess is less useful if it is obscure, difficult to remember, or likely to lead you into poor follow-up decisions.
Strong alternatives to SLATE
CRANE
CRANE gives you C, R, A, N, and E. It retains two highly useful vowels while testing a different group of consonants from SLATE. Choose it if you prefer a familiar answer-style word or if you want R and N in your standard opening coverage.
CRATE and TRACE
CRATE and TRACE are closely related options. Both test A and E alongside C, R, and T; they simply arrange the letters differently. That positioning can change the feedback patterns you receive, but neither word should be treated as a guaranteed upgrade over SLATE. They are sensible choices if you prefer their spelling, want a consistent hard-mode repertoire, or find their likely follow-up words easier to see.

STARE tests S, T, A, R, and E—five common letters in a highly recognizable word. It is a good human-friendly opener for players who want a natural word rather than an artificial-looking collection of high-frequency letters.
RAISE
RAISE deserves more credit than it sometimes receives. It replaces T or L with I, giving you R, A, I, S, and E. Information-theoretic analyses can rank RAISE extremely highly, depending on the answer list, allowed-guess list, and target distribution being used. It is therefore a serious alternative, not a mistake—particularly if identifying the presence of I early helps your solving style.
Why there is no universally perfect Wordle opener
Different rankings are often answering different questions. A solver might optimize for:
- Letter coverage: how many common letters the guess tests.
- Expected information: how much the feedback is expected to reduce uncertainty.
- Average remaining answers: how small the candidate list becomes after the guess.
- Immediate solves: how often the opener itself happens to be the answer.
- Human usability: whether the word is familiar and easy to use under pressure.
Those objectives can produce different winners. An algorithm may find an obscure valid guess that divides the remaining answer set more efficiently than a familiar word. That does not automatically make it the best choice for protecting your personal streak. The result also changes when researchers use different dictionaries, accepted-guess lists, or assumptions about which words are likely to be selected as targets.
Why five different letters usually beat repeated letters
On the opening turn, repeated letters normally provide less information than five distinct candidates. If you play a word with two copies of one letter, you have fewer chances to discover something new. That is why SLATE, CRANE, and the other recommended starters avoid repetition.
This is a rule of thumb, not a law. Wordle’s answer list includes words with repeated letters, so a repeat can become valuable once you have evidence for it. For example, if the feedback strongly suggests that a letter is present and your remaining candidates commonly double it, testing that repetition may be the correct move. The principle is simply that you generally want maximum new coverage before you have any clues.
Are ADIEU and AUDIO good starting words?
ADIEU and AUDIO are popular because they test several vowels immediately. That can be useful if you find vowel identification difficult or want to establish the broad vowel pattern before considering consonants.

The trade-off is that they test fewer common consonants. If all their letters come back gray, you may know a great deal about the vowels while still having many unresolved consonant patterns. Balanced openers such as SLATE, CRANE, or TRACE tend to offer more useful average coverage for ordinary play.

Use ADIEU or AUDIO if they fit your solving method, but do not assume that “more vowels” means “more information” in every puzzle. A strong opener needs to separate plausible answers, not merely contain a large number of different vowel letters.
What to play after your first guess
Your second guess should respond to the tiles, not repeat a favorite opening word automatically.
- Lock in green letters. Keep a green letter in the exact position Wordle revealed.
- Move yellow letters. A yellow letter is in the answer but cannot remain in that position. Place it in an untested position while respecting any other clues.
- Remove gray letters. Treat gray letters as absent unless duplicate-letter feedback means a copy may still be possible. Wordle’s handling of repeated letters can make a letter appear gray in one position even when another copy is in the answer.
- Count the remaining candidates. If the pattern now points to only a few likely answers, solve from that narrowed list rather than playing another broad word.
- Use a diagnostic guess when appropriate. If normal mode leaves a large group of candidates, a guess that tests several new, frequent letters can be better than choosing one candidate at random.
Normal mode versus hard mode
In normal mode, you can use a second guess as an information word even if it is unlikely to be the answer. This is valuable when several possible solutions share the same known pattern. You might sacrifice the chance of solving in two guesses to identify the correct branch and protect the overall solve.
In hard mode, every subsequent guess must use all revealed green letters and include revealed yellow letters. A broad diagnostic word may therefore be illegal if it abandons known structure. In that mode:

- Choose an opener whose letters and positions leave useful follow-up options.
- Keep all confirmed information in every guess.
- Prioritize narrowing the legal candidate set over testing unrelated letters.
- Watch for repeated letters once the pattern makes them plausible.
A balanced opener such as SLATE works in both modes, but the best second move is mode-dependent. Normal mode gives you more freedom to investigate; hard mode rewards disciplined candidate elimination.
How to protect a Wordle streak
Streak preservation is not always identical to minimizing the theoretical average number of guesses. Once only a few answers remain, look for traps before committing:
- Words that differ by one letter, such as two candidates with the same known pattern.
- Possible double letters that the feedback has not yet ruled out.
- Unusual endings or consonant clusters that are easy to overlook.
- Words that are accepted guesses but are unlikely to be selected answers.
If two or more candidates remain and a wrong guess would end the streak, an information guess can be safer than picking one blindly—provided normal mode allows it. In hard mode, compare the legal candidates and use the known letter positions to eliminate as many as possible.
Do not play an obscure computationally favored word merely because an algorithm ranks it highly. A word should have a clear purpose: solve a likely answer, test a necessary letter, or distinguish between remaining candidates.
Does the old 2,309-answer strategy still apply?
Be cautious with older guides that present Wordle as a fixed, never-repeating sequence of 2,309 solutions. The answer pool, accepted guesses, ordering, and editorial choices can change. Reporting in January 2026 indicated that previously used answers would begin returning to the answer pool, making some older assumptions about a finite, nonrepeating solution list unreliable for current play.

The practical lesson is simple: use historical letter-frequency analysis as guidance, not as a promise about what can or cannot appear. No opening word guarantees a win or permanently protects a streak.
Wordle beyond solo play
If you enjoy the deduction but want to play with other people, Wordle: The Party Game is the officially licensed physical version from Hasbro and The New York Times Games. It supports two to four players and uses dry-erase boards and markers, with multiple play modes and games of up to six guesses. It is a way to bring the format to a table; it does not improve your digital Wordle streak or change the strategy above. The simple recommendation
Play SLATE if you want one dependable default. Choose CRANE, CRATE, TRACE, STARE, or RAISE if you prefer their letter mix or spelling. Then let the green, yellow, and gray feedback determine your next move. Consistent interpretation and careful candidate management matter far more than switching between several near-equivalent openers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is SLATE considered the best Wordle starting word?
SLATE is a strong practical default because it tests five unique letters, including common consonants plus A and E. It is not guaranteed to be mathematically optimal for every answer list or player.
What are the best alternatives to SLATE?
Yes. CRANE, CRATE, TRACE, STARE, and RAISE all provide strong coverage. RAISE can rank particularly well in information-theoretic analyses because it tests I along with R, A, S, and E.
Are ADIEU and AUDIO better because they contain more vowels?
They can identify the vowel pattern quickly, but they test fewer common consonants. Balanced openers such as SLATE, CRANE, and TRACE are generally more useful for average practical play.
Should my second Wordle guess be an information word?
In normal mode, you can play a diagnostic word that tests new letters even if it is unlikely to be the answer. In hard mode, every guess must obey all revealed green and yellow clues, so that diagnostic word may not be legal.
The Bottom Line
Best default: SLATE. It offers five distinct, common letters and is easy to use. CRANE, CRATE, TRACE, STARE, and RAISE are credible alternatives. The opener matters less than using the feedback correctly, distinguishing normal mode from hard mode, and checking for repeated-letter traps when your streak is at risk.
