There is no universal winner. For a small, low-budget network, a shared plan such as SiteGround GrowBig can work if it includes multisite, wildcard SSL and staging. For business-critical sites, Kinsta or WP Engine provide managed operations at a higher cost. Agencies that need to place many client sites on one adjustable server should examine Cloudways. Your decision should follow the way the host counts sites—per plan, per site or per server—not the headline “unlimited” claim.

The details below separate WordPress Multisite from separate installations, explain the limits that matter, and show how to verify a plan before moving a live network.

First decide what “multiple sites” means

WordPress can run several independent installations under one hosting account, or one WordPress Multisite network can contain many subsites. Those are different operating models.

Separate installations

Each site has its own WordPress files, database, administrators, plugins and update schedule. A failure or compromised plugin is less likely to spread to the other sites, but you repeat backups, updates and maintenance. Hosts usually count these as individual websites or installations.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

One Multisite network

A network shares core files and many settings. Subsites can use subdomains such as shop.example.com or subdirectories such as example.com/shop. A network administrator controls themes, plugins and users across the network. This reduces routine work, but a vulnerable plugin or stolen administrator account can affect every subsite. Subdomain networks also require DNS and certificate support that ordinary single-site hosting may not provide.

Ask the host which model its site allowance covers. “Ten websites” may mean ten independent installs, while Multisite may require a product extension, a higher tier or a support request.

Best choices by situation

Situation Shortlist Why it fits Important check
Small network with a tight budget SiteGround GrowBig Shared hosting with a documented Multisite setup path, multisite-aware optimization and wildcard Let’s Encrypt certificates. Current GrowBig price, resource limits and whether the features you need remain enabled on your account.
Business-critical network Kinsta Managed WordPress operations, staging on site add-ons and wildcard SSL through its Cloudflare integration. Multisite eligibility: billing documentation conflicts with an older knowledge-base statement.
Managed hosting with an enterprise-oriented workflow WP Engine Supports Multisite through a product extension and User Portal conversion. Extension cost, current site limits and whether Advanced Network is needed for your domain-mapping design.
Many client sites on one adjustable server Cloudways Charges by server rather than by WordPress site, so you size CPU, memory and storage for the aggregate workload. Current DigitalOcean-based server price, backups, support scope and your responsibility for administration.
Low-cost unlimited-site experiments A2 Hosting or HostArmada Review summaries describe unlimited-site shared plans. Those limits were not verified with current vendor documentation; confirm fair-use, CPU, inode and database limits in writing.
Per-site deployment control InstaWP or CloudPress Useful when your workflow budgets each site separately rather than buying one large hosting account. They are quoted as per-site tools; confirm whether the plan is hosting, a staging layer or a management service.

How the hosting models differ

Model Billing unit Strengths Trade-offs for a network
Shared hosting Usually a plan with a site allowance Lowest entry price and simple control panels. CPU, memory, processes and disk I/O are shared; one busy site can slow others. “Unlimited” normally still has fair-use limits.
Managed WordPress Plan, environment or added site Provider handles more updates, security tooling, backups and staging. Higher recurring cost; plugins, server settings and Multisite features may be restricted by tier.
Per-server cloud Virtual server size You can host many sites without paying a separate hosting fee for each one and scale resources as traffic changes. You or your agency must manage application configuration, updates, monitoring and capacity planning.
Per-site platform Each site Predictable allocation and easy client-by-client budgeting. Costs rise linearly with the number of sites and may not include production hosting.

Provider details and current evidence

Kinsta: premium managed option

A 2026 review places Kinsta at about $35 per month, but that figure was not verified on the provider’s pricing page and may be promotional. Billing documentation says Multisite is allowed on all plans except Single 35k visits and Single 20GB bandwidth. A separate knowledge-base statement says support begins at WP 2 and above, so confirm your exact plan before purchase.

Kinsta’s documented WordPress site add-on is $30 per month for each additional site. The add-on includes a staging environment and a DNS zone, which can make the effective cost clearer than moving to a much larger plan. Enterprise pricing is listed as starting at $500 per month in one result; treat that as a low-confidence starting point, not a quote.

Wildcard SSL is a strong fit for subdomain networks. Kinsta’s Cloudflare integration automatically protects verified domains with free certificates that support wildcards. You still need to point DNS correctly and verify every production hostname.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

WP Engine: managed Multisite with an extension

WP Engine requires the Multisite product extension and conversion of the environment to Multisite in the User Portal. If your network maps different domains to subsites, the documentation limits that function to the Advanced Network. A guide for adding extra SSL, including wildcard certificates, suggests that wildcard coverage is not automatically included in every setup; confirm the certificate workflow and any fee before migrating.

A review summary lists a Growth plan at $109 per month with a 10-site limit. That is a low-confidence, review-derived figure, and no official plan site limits were located in the available material. Obtain a written quote that states the number of production sites, staging environments, visits, bandwidth and the Multisite extension.

SiteGround GrowBig: budget shared hosting

GrowBig is the tier most often associated with Multisite. Review summaries disagree on price, reporting $4.99 to $14.99 per month; the lower number is likely an introductory promotion. Check the renewal price, term length, storage, database and process limits rather than relying on the first-month banner.

The setup path is to install WordPress in Site Tools and then enable Multisite in wp-config.php. SiteGround Optimizer supports Multisite and allows an administrator to force HTTPS for each site from Network Admin. Free Let’s Encrypt wildcard certificates are available, but issuance and renewal use DNS verification only; your DNS provider must allow the required records.

An older SiteGround article said Multisite was incompatible with newer features. That statement appears outdated, so test the current stack in staging instead of treating the old post as a permanent prohibition.

Cloudways: pay for a server, not each site

Cloudways is aimed at teams that manage many sites on a self-sized server. DigitalOcean-based prices in the available summaries range from $6.60 to $8.25 per month, an unresolved conflict that must be checked against the current calculator. The price is for the server configuration, not a guaranteed number of WordPress sites.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

This model can be economical for an agency with predictable aggregate traffic. Size the server for simultaneous PHP workers, database activity, backups and peak traffic across every site. Also budget for administration: a per-server host does not remove the need for patching, monitoring, access control and incident response.

A2 Hosting and HostArmada: claims of unlimited sites

Review material cites both providers as low-cost shared options with unlimited-site plans. The available evidence does not verify those claims against current vendor pages. Before relying on “unlimited,” ask for the practical limits: CPU seconds, concurrent processes, memory, inodes, databases, backups, email and acceptable-use rules. A nominally unlimited plan can still be unsuitable for a busy network.

InstaWP and CloudPress: per-site tools

One comparison quotes InstaWP Starter at $5 per site and CloudPress Basic at $12 per site. Those figures are low-confidence and may describe a staging or management layer rather than full production hosting. Confirm whether each price includes a live server, SSL, backups, custom domains, bandwidth and support. Per-site pricing is attractive when clients pay independently; it is usually more expensive than a well-sized server once the portfolio grows.

Requirements to verify before buying

  • Multisite status: Is it included, gated behind an extension, or restricted to a particular plan?
  • Site accounting: Does the allowance count subsites, separate installs, staging copies or all of them?
  • Wildcard SSL: Required for a subdomain network unless you issue certificates for every hostname separately. Confirm who performs DNS validation and renewal.
  • Domain mapping: If each subsite needs its own domain, check whether mapping requires an Advanced Network or another paid feature.
  • Staging: Verify whether staging is included per site, shared across the account or charged as an add-on. Test pushing database and media changes safely.
  • Resource isolation: Shared accounts let one site consume common resources. Ask about process, memory, inode and database limits.
  • Backups and restores: Confirm retention, restore granularity and whether a single subsite can be restored without replacing the whole network.
  • Security operations: Look for vulnerability scanning, automatic updates, malware response and two-factor authentication, then identify which tasks remain yours.
  • Support boundaries: Determine whether support troubleshoots WordPress Multisite, DNS, certificate errors and plugin conflicts or only the server.
  • Migration policy: Ask whether the provider migrates a complete network, preserves mapped domains and supplies a rollback plan.

How to choose in six steps

  1. Inventory the sites. Record domains, monthly traffic, storage, media volume, peak events, plugins, cron jobs and whether sites share users or content.
  2. Choose the architecture. Use one Multisite network when sites share governance and plugin policy. Keep unrelated clients or high-risk applications in separate installations or servers.
  3. Calculate the billing unit. Compare the total for your real site count, staging copies and expected growth. Include per-site add-ons, Multisite extensions, backups and SSL charges.
  4. Prove the network features. Obtain written confirmation of subdomain or domain-mapped Multisite, wildcard SSL, staging and site-level restores on the exact plan.
  5. Test capacity and recovery. Build a staging copy, run representative queries and media uploads, test cache behavior, restore a backup and verify certificate renewal before DNS cutover.
  6. Document exit options. Keep a current export, DNS records, administrator list, plugin inventory and database credentials so you can move a subsite or the entire network.

Setting up a WordPress Multisite safely

Prepare DNS and backups

Lower DNS time-to-live before migration, export each existing site and record domain mappings. For a subdomain network, plan a wildcard DNS record and certificate. For mapped domains, list every hostname and its certificate requirement.

Enable the network

  1. Install a clean WordPress instance and deactivate plugins temporarily.
  2. Add define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true); to wp-config.php, sign in again, and open Tools → Network Setup.
  3. Choose subdomains or subdirectories. WordPress may require subdomains when the existing site is older or already uses a path structure.
  4. Follow the generated instructions to add the network constants to wp-config.php and rewrite rules to the server configuration.
  5. Sign in to Network Admin, install only required themes and plugins, and create the first subsite.

Secure and validate

Force HTTPS after certificates are active, create least-privilege accounts, and test logins, media uploads, email, cron, caching and mapped domains on staging. Then create a fresh backup, switch DNS, monitor errors and keep the old environment available until traffic and restores are confirmed.

Security and operations at network scale

Multisite concentrates risk. A vulnerable plugin, weak administrator password or malicious upload on one subsite can expose shared files, database tables or network-level settings. Keep network administration separate from ordinary site administration, enforce two-factor authentication where available, remove abandoned plugins and review administrator access regularly.

Apply updates in staging first, especially for plugins that alter rewrite rules, user roles, caching or database schema. Maintain off-server backups and periodically perform a full restore, not merely a backup-success check. Monitor per-site traffic and PHP errors so a sudden spike on one subsite does not remain hidden inside an account-wide graph.

Pricing traps and growth planning

Hosting prices in this category are unusually difficult to compare. Promotional monthly figures can require a multi-year prepayment, while renewal prices are higher. A quoted “site limit” may exclude staging, count only separate installations or change with the plan tier. Add-ons can also alter the economics: Kinsta’s documented additional-site charge is $30 per month, whereas a server-based model may keep the same hosting fee until the server must be resized.

Model three points: today’s production sites, the number after 12 months, and a traffic-spike scenario. Include domain registration, premium plugins, transactional email, backups, monitoring, development time and migration costs. Select the smallest plan that passes your load and recovery tests, not the plan with the largest marketing number.

Troubleshooting common failures

Wildcard certificate will not issue

Check that the DNS-01 verification record is published at the authoritative DNS provider, not only at a forwarding service. Confirm the wildcard covers the hostname pattern you use; a certificate for *.example.com does not cover example.com itself or a deeper name such as shop.eu.example.com.

Subsites redirect or show the wrong domain

Verify the site and home URLs, mapped-domain settings, HTTPS redirects and proxy mode. Clear application and server caches after correcting DNS. If the host limits domain mapping to a higher network tier, no rewrite rule will replace that entitlement.

One site makes the whole network slow

Inspect slow queries, scheduled jobs, image processing and sudden traffic before upgrading blindly. On shared hosting, ask support for process and memory graphs. On a server-based plan, increase resources only after identifying whether PHP workers, database CPU, disk I/O or external APIs are the bottleneck.

A plugin breaks every subsite

Use Network Admin or file access to deactivate the plugin network-wide, restore the last known-good staging snapshot, and test the plugin against the current WordPress and PHP versions. Keep a plugin allowlist for production and roll out changes to a pilot subsite first.

Bottom-line decision

Choose SiteGround GrowBig when price is the priority and your network can live with shared-resource limits after you verify current Multisite, wildcard SSL and staging behavior. Choose Kinsta when managed operations, staging and wildcard SSL justify premium per-site costs, but confirm the plan exceptions and add-on math. Choose WP Engine when its Multisite extension and domain-mapping workflow match your organization, and obtain current limits in writing. Choose Cloudways when you operate enough client sites to manage a server and can accept responsibility for capacity and security. Treat unlimited-site claims and per-site tool prices as leads to verify, not as established totals.
