How to choose a world-building game
“World-building” can mean anything from placing blocks without limits to planning a city that must function. Before picking a game, consider what you want to make and how much pressure you want alongside the construction.
- Creative freedom: Do you want tools with few constraints, or a defined set of systems and goals?
- Building subject: Are you imagining structures, a whole city, a zoo, an outpost on another planet, or a compact town?
- Pressure: Would gathering, survival, combat, budgets, or animal and city management make the project more satisfying—or get in the way?
- Play structure: Do you prefer open-ended creation, or building as part of exploration and progression?
- Platform and online play: Check the listing for your specific edition and system. Cross-play and online requirements vary; do not assume that a feature on one platform applies to another.
Best world-building games by play style
Minecraft: Best all-purpose building sandbox
Minecraft is the broadest fit for players who want to decide for themselves what to make. Its official description identifies it as an open-world sandbox with Creative and Survival modes. Creative mode removes resource constraints; Survival asks players to gather materials and contend with danger. Nintendo’s US listing describes the choice as: “Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs.” Nintendo’s Minecraft – Nintendo Switch (Physical Copy) listing also notes that online features require a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership, subject to terms and regional availability. That requirement applies to the listing’s online features, not to every way of playing the game.

Cities: Skylines: Best for designing a functioning city
Cities: Skylines is for builders who want their creation to behave like a city, not just look like one. Its focus is creating and maintaining a city, which makes planning and ongoing systems part of the appeal. Roads, districts, and the broader layout are only part of the project; you also have to engage with the systems that keep an urban environment going. Pick it if you enjoy balancing visual design with management.

Cities: Skylines II is another option in the series, with its own stated systems and tools. Its existence does not make it the automatic choice for every player: compare the current platform listings and the features you care about before deciding between the two.
Planet Zoo: Best for habitats, scenery, and zoo design
Planet Zoo narrows the building brief in a useful way: you design zoos, habitats, and scenery, with animal and zoo management alongside construction. That makes it a strong choice when you want a coherent setting and a reason to think about how spaces work for their inhabitants, rather than a blank canvas alone. Its Steam listing describes sharing community creations through the Steam Workshop, a plus for players who enjoy browsing and exchanging designs.

Choose it if discovering places is as important to you as settling in and making a base.
Terraria: Best for 2D building with exploration and combat
Terraria combines sandbox creativity and building with exploration and action-game elements. Its 2D perspective gives construction a distinct feel from block-based 3D games, while combat and discovery make the world more than a relaxed building canvas. It suits players who want a home base and structures to support a wider adventure; it is a less natural match if you want construction without action pressure.
