Item level is an important baseline, but it is not a complete verdict: weapon damage, stat distribution, sockets, set bonuses, embellishments, trinket effects and other special mechanics can outweigh a small level difference.
Use this comparison order every time
Gear decisions become much clearer when each tool answers a different question. The game client supplies authoritative item and upgrade data; an addon can rank ordinary stat changes quickly; manual inspection catches effects that a stat-weight model cannot represent.

- Read the native comparison tooltip. Hover the candidate item while the equipped item is available for comparison. Record item level, weapon damage where applicable, primary and secondary-stat changes, sockets, enchants and the visible upgrade-track rank.
- Open the Item Upgrade vendor. The vendor identifies upgradeable items, shows the item’s track and current level, and lists the currency cost beside every available upgrade level. Check the item as it is now and at the highest rank you can actually afford.
- Run a Pawn comparison for speed. Pawn’s Compare tab places the candidate beside the equipped item, applies a selected stat scale and can display a green upgrade arrow. Use it as a fast filter, not as the final authority.
- Inspect exceptions manually. Set bonuses, powerful on-use or proc effects, embellishments and other mechanics that cannot be reduced to ordinary stat weights must be evaluated outside Pawn’s score.
- Confirm the client and addon build. Retail tooltip behavior changes between patches. On current Midnight clients, world-quest interaction is restricted; map-hover comparison with Pawn’s configured key binding is the documented workaround.
What the native tooltip tells you
Turn on item comparison
Use the game’s comparison-tooltip option so hovering a candidate displays it beside the item currently equipped in that slot. This is the first check because it exposes the actual item data rather than a calculated score. Read the two panels line by line:
- Item level: the headline level and the number that generally determines the item’s stat budget.
- Weapon damage: a critical comparison for weapons; a higher item level can change damage in a way that a simple secondary-stat total does not show.
- Primary and secondary stats: note both gains and losses, not only the green number.
- Sockets and enchants: an existing socket or enchant has value that may not be reflected in the raw item-level gap.
- Track and rank: the tooltip identifies the upgrade track and the item’s current rank within that track.
- Set and special text: read every bonus, trigger and equip effect before accepting an arrow or score.
Do not treat a green stat change as an automatic upgrade. A lower-level piece can be preferable when its set contribution, socket, weapon damage, or unique effect is more important to your specialization.

How WoW upgrade tracks work
Blizzard’s upgrade system assigns an item to a track according to the level at which the item was created. The documented track names are Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion and Hero. The tooltip exposes both the track and the item’s current rank, while the vendor shows the levels available for that item and their costs.
| Track | Upgrade levels in Blizzard’s documented example | What to verify in the live season |
|---|---|---|
| Explorer | Eight | Current number of ranks and currency requirements |
| Adventurer | Eight | Current number of ranks and currency requirements |
| Veteran | Eight | Current number of ranks and currency requirements |
| Champion | Eight | Current number of ranks and currency requirements |
| Hero | Five | Current number of ranks and currency requirements |
The eight-level and five-level figures come from Blizzard’s 2023 overview and are expansion-specific examples, not permanent rules. Track names, currencies, caps, discounts and rank counts can change with a new expansion or season, so use the live tooltip and vendor rather than an old chart.
Blizzard’s developer explanation is the key principle: “The level an item is created at determines which upgrade path and level it’s created with.” Each item can only be upgraded to a specific level. A high item level does not let you move an item onto a different track; it only tells you where that item sits within its assigned path.

Flightstone and currency limits
Blizzard documented a maximum holding limit of 2,000 Flightstones in 2023. Treat that number as an expansion-specific example and verify the current cap in your client. The vendor’s displayed cost is safer than memorized prices because both currencies and season rules change.
Exact vendor workflow before you spend currency
- Take the candidate to the Item Upgrade vendor. Open the upgrade interface with the item in your bags or equipped, following the vendor’s normal item-selection control.
- Read the track and current rank. Compare the rank shown here with the tooltip. If they do not appear to match, reselect the item and make sure you are viewing the intended copy.
- Inspect every available level. The interface displays the cost beside each level you can purchase. Note the next rank and the highest rank affordable with the currencies you actually have.
- Compare the item at both endpoints. In your notes or a screenshot, record the current stats and the stats after the highest affordable upgrade. This prevents judging a long-track item only by its starting level.
- Check slot rules. Rings, trinkets and one-handed weapons can be affected by slot-specific rules and account-wide highest-slot discounts when the season supports them. Confirm the discount shown for your character rather than assuming every slot is treated identically.
- Decide only after checking alternatives. Compare the same currency against other pieces with more remaining ranks or a larger performance gain. Scarce crest-like currencies are usually more valuable on an item with a long path and a meaningful upgrade, unless a set or special effect changes the priority.
Pawn settings for fast stat comparisons
Pawn is useful when you need to sort several ordinary stat upgrades quickly. Its Compare tab places an item beside your equipped item, calculates scores from a selected stat scale and can show green upgrade arrows. The result is only as good as the scale behind it.
Recommended options
- Enable the item-level upgrade display. This lets Pawn show a level-based upgrade indication alongside its stat-weight result.
- Enable the Compare-tab key binding. Use the binding to compare an item while hovering it, especially in places where normal tooltip interaction is restricted.
- Keep “show scale values and upgrade %” visible if you find percentages useful. The raw scale values explain why an arrow appears and make it easier to spot an implausibly large result.
- Use Manual mode for imported weights. Replace the default scale with values from a current simulation or spreadsheet for your class and specialization.
- Ignore or disable arrows for effect-driven items. If the item’s value comes mainly from a set bonus, proc, on-use effect or another mechanic Pawn cannot score, the arrow can be misleading.
Import weights from a simulation
Pawn’s default or community scales are a simplified model. For a close decision, obtain current stat weights from a simulation or your own maintained spreadsheet, then enter those values in Pawn’s Manual mode. Recheck the scale after changing talents, encounter profile, gear set or specialization; weights are not universal character truths.

Pawn’s documentation explicitly warns that stat weights “are a simplified model for evaluating gear and will never be as good as the advice you can get from a simulator.” Use the addon to narrow a list, then simulate the finalists when the decision involves expensive upgrades or near-equal pieces.

Higher item level usually means a larger budget for the item’s stats, but the budget is distributed differently across items. A specialization may value one secondary stat far more than another, and some effects do not behave like additive stats at all.
Cases that can overturn an item-level decision
- Weapon damage: weapon damage can matter more than a small secondary-stat improvement, so compare the damage range as well as the level.
- Stat distribution: a lower-level item with a favorable primary/secondary combination can beat a higher-level item with poorly valued stats.
- Sockets and enchants: account for the gem or enchant already on the item and the cost of reproducing it.
- Set bonuses: breaking or completing a set can change the value of both pieces. Pawn’s ordinary score does not evaluate the full bonus.
- Embellishments and special effects: unique triggers, procs and on-use abilities can dominate a stat-weight comparison.
- Trinkets: a trinket’s effect and timing often matter more than its printed stat budget; test it in a simulation or evaluate the effect directly.
- Upgrade ceiling: an item that starts lower but has many affordable ranks can become the better investment than a slightly higher item near its cap.

| Check | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Item level and weapon damage | Which item has the higher level, and how does weapon damage change? | Level raises the general stat budget; weapon damage can be decisive for weapons. |
| Primary and secondary stats | What are the exact gains and losses for your specialization? | Stat weights can make a lower-level distribution stronger. |
| Sockets and enchants | Does either item include a socket or an enchant you would otherwise need to replace? | These add value outside the printed level gap. |
| Set or special effects | Will equipping or removing it change a set bonus or unique effect? | Pawn cannot fully score many non-stat mechanics. |
| Current and maximum rank | What is the present rank, and what is the highest rank you can afford? | The investment can change the item’s final comparison. |
| Currency cost | What does the vendor charge for each rank? | Use the live cost, not a remembered chart. |
| Confidence in weights | Are the Pawn weights current and simulation-derived? | Outdated or generic weights make arrows less trustworthy. |
When to spend scarce upgrade currency
- List the items that can use the currency and their remaining ranks.
- Remove pieces whose advantage depends on a set or special effect you have not evaluated.
- Compare the performance gain at the next rank and at the highest rank you can afford.
- Prefer a long remaining path with a meaningful gain when the alternatives are ordinary stat upgrades of similar value.
- Recheck slot-specific discounts for rings, trinkets and one-handed weapons before confirming the purchase.
Retail 12.0.7 and Midnight addon caveats
CurseForge lists Pawn 2.13.10 for Retail 12.0.7 and 12.0.5, uploaded May 14, 2026. The release notes state that world-quest interaction was disabled because of Midnight tooltip restrictions. Map-hover comparison with Pawn’s key binding remains the documented workaround.
That limitation affects how you open a comparison, not the underlying principle of checking the native tooltip and vendor. If an arrow disappears, fails to appear or cannot be triggered from a world-quest interface, first verify the addon release and use the map-hover/key-binding method. Do not interpret a missing arrow as proof that two items have equal value.

No comparison panel appears
- Confirm the game’s comparison-tooltip option is enabled.
- Hover the actual item rather than a link preview or quest text.
- For Pawn, use the configured Compare-tab key binding and the supported map-hover workaround when a Midnight tooltip restriction blocks world-quest interaction.
Pawn shows a green arrow, but the item feels worse
- Check whether the arrow scored only ordinary stats while the item changes a set bonus, embellishment or special effect.
- Verify that the selected scale matches your current class, specialization, talents and gear profile.
- Replace generic weights with current simulation-derived values in Manual mode.
- Compare weapon damage, sockets and enchants in the native tooltip.
The vendor price differs from an online chart
Use the price in the live Item Upgrade interface. Track names, currencies, caps, discounts and available ranks are season-specific, so a historical chart can be correct for its original expansion and still be wrong for your character now.

The item level is higher but the upgrade is unaffordable
Record the item’s current rank and the highest rank you can afford instead of comparing an imagined fully upgraded version. If the item requires more currency than you have, compare the immediate rank you can buy and preserve resources for pieces with a larger near-term gain.
Practical checklist
- Native comparison tooltips are enabled.
- Item level, weapon damage, primary stats and secondary stats have been read on both items.
- Sockets, enchants, set bonuses, embellishments and special effects have been checked.
- The tooltip and Item Upgrade vendor agree on the track and current rank.
- The vendor’s live cost has been recorded for the next and highest affordable ranks.
- Pawn’s Compare tab, item-level display and key binding are enabled if you use the addon.
- Pawn’s scale is current, specialization-specific and imported in Manual mode when possible.
- A simulation is used for close or expensive decisions.
- Current Retail and addon versions are confirmed, especially on Midnight clients.
Bottom line: the best settings are a layered workflow
Enable native comparison tooltips, use the Item Upgrade vendor as the source for track, rank and cost, and configure Pawn to display item-level upgrades, Compare-tab results, upgrade percentages and a current manual stat scale. Treat every arrow as a starting point. The final decision belongs to the complete tooltip comparison and, for close choices, a simulation that includes the set bonuses and special effects Pawn cannot model.
