For a year-by-year tour of the Xbox 360 era, these are my picks for the strongest blend of critical standing, distinctive play on the console, and lasting appeal. The years run from the Xbox 360’s 2005 launch through Microsoft’s 2016 decision to stop making new consoles—a useful boundary for its active hardware era, not a claim that Xbox 360 games stopped releasing in 2016.
“Best” is a judgment, not a universal annual award. This guide names one lead pick for each year, with alternatives where they help match different tastes. Release year means the game’s original Xbox 360 release year, not a later port or edition.

How to read these picks
GamesRadar+’s hand-picked list of 25 Xbox 360 games is a useful all-time reference, but it is not an annual ballot or a consensus ranking. Its selections inform several picks below; the yearly choices are editorial recommendations based on the game’s appeal, its fit for the platform, and the kind of experience it offers. GamesRadar+’s Xbox 360 ranking
Microsoft announced the Xbox 360’s North American launch for November 22, 2005, with 18 games available on or before that date. That makes 2005 a launch-year category, even though the console arrived late in the calendar year. Microsoft’s launch announcement

#1 Best Overall
- The Largest Collection of Classic SEGA Titles. Players will trip back in time with favorites including Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Columns, Eco the Dolphin and four titles from the Phantasy Star series, to name a few.
- Several Unlockable Titles. Included in the collection are arcade favorites such as Congo Bongo, Altered Beast, Zaxxon and more.
- All Titles Upgraded to Hi-Def. The classic 2D style never looked so good! Each title has been converted to hi-def (720p) and will be a blast to play using the intuitive controls of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 systems.
- Massive Multiplayer Options. Friends can play the 2-Player classics together in select games from the same console at home.
Best Xbox 360 game by year
2005 — Kameo: Elements of Power
Kameo is a fitting launch-year pick: Microsoft included it among the games available on or before the console’s North American launch. Its fantasy setting and shape-shifting hero gave the new system an immediately recognizable adventure game. The launch announcement establishes its availability, not that it was objectively the year’s best; this is a recommendation for a distinctive early Xbox 360 experience.
2006 — Gears of War
Gears of War is the year’s defining recommendation for players who want a forceful, cover-based action game and a strong split-screen or online co-op option. It helped establish a distinct Xbox 360 identity around cinematic third-person combat. This is an editorial pick; the cited all-time ranking does not supply a 2006 annual verdict.
2007 — BioShock
Choose BioShock for a tightly authored first-person adventure that balances combat with atmosphere and moral choices. Its underwater setting and story-led design make it a strong single-player counterpoint to the era’s emphasis on competitive and cooperative action. The year assignment here refers to its original Xbox 360 release, not later versions.
Rank #2
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- The infinite possibilities in Minecraft just got bigger
- The new crafting interface in Minecraft for Xbox 360 delivers a completely new way to build Minecraft worlds where your imagination is the only limit
- Full featured Tutorial mode to teach the basics and help master essential skills faster
- Social Multiplayer - up to 4 player split screen on one console, share the experience for the first time from the comfort of your couch
2008 — Fallout 3
Fallout 3 is the lead choice for players who want a huge role-playing adventure with room to explore and make consequential decisions. GamesRadar+ highlights its open-world design and substantial player choice. Gears of War 2 is the better alternative if you would rather have a focused shooter campaign, cooperative play, and the Horde survival mode GamesRadar+ calls out.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2009 — Left 4 Dead 2
For a group willing to communicate and adapt, Left 4 Dead 2 is the standout. Its cooperative campaigns support play with up to three friends, and the retrospective points to its new weapons and levels as part of the sequel’s appeal. It is a natural choice for co-op first; players seeking a solo story-led RPG should look elsewhere.
2010 — Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 2 takes the year for its crew-focused science-fiction role-playing story. Its emphasis on assembling a team gives the adventure a more personal center than a conventional save-the-galaxy quest. For a Western open world, pick Red Dead Redemption; for a focused military science-fiction campaign, consider Halo: Reach. GamesRadar+ includes all three among its Xbox 360 all-time selections.
Rank #3
- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
2011 — The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim is the recommendation for players who want to lose themselves in a large fantasy world and choose their own pace. If you prefer a demanding action RPG built around interconnected exploration, choose Dark Souls. For superhero combat and stealth, Batman: Arkham City offers a very different kind of adventure. GamesRadar+ recognizes all three, but its all-time list does not declare a winner for 2011.
2012 — Dishonored
Dishonored is the best fit for players who like to solve missions through stealth, powers, combat, or a changing mix of approaches. Its flexible stealth-action structure makes it a strong single-player pick. For cooperative shooting and loot, consider Borderlands 2; for deliberate, turn-based strategy, choose XCOM: Enemy Unknown. All three appear in GamesRadar+’s hand-picked ranking.
2013 — Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto V is the broadest recommendation for a sprawling open-world crime story. Readers after a more directed narrative shooter may prefer BioShock Infinite; those who want an action RPG built around loot may favor Diablo III; and pirate-adventure fans should consider Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. GamesRadar+ includes each in its platform-wide ranking, making this one of the year’s deepest groups of candidates.
Rank #4
- Train and advance your abilities of 2 wheel driving, barrel rolls and more in 6 thrilling game modes.
- Catch air and perform as many stunts and tricks to get the highest score.
- Collect and use a variety of power ups to eliminate as many crash karts as possible to get the highest score.
- Hop into the tracks against Lightning McQueen and the gang to rev up for the ultimate challenge.
- Put your training to the test and race against your family and friends to become the ultimate champion.
2014 — Alien: Isolation
For survival horror, Alien: Isolation is a strong Xbox 360 recommendation: it builds tension around evasion and vulnerability rather than turning its threat into a routine target. It suits players who want a slow, nerve-testing single-player experience more than a fast action game. The cited all-time ranking does not establish a consensus winner for 2014.
2015 — Rise of the Tomb Raider
Rise of the Tomb Raider is the pick for an action-adventure campaign that combines exploration, combat, and environmental puzzles. It is a good choice if you want a polished, story-led adventure on the console late in its hardware era. The fact that Microsoft marked the Xbox 360’s tenth anniversary in 2015 does not make that year the console’s final software year.
2016 — Dark Souls III
Dark Souls III is a fitting closing pick for this active-hardware-era guide if you want demanding action RPG combat and careful exploration. The year is a hardware boundary, not a verified final release year: in April 2016, Microsoft announced it would stop manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles, but that decision did not mean software releases had ended. The source set does not establish the last year in which any Xbox 360 game was released.

- For a substantial story: Look to Mass Effect 2, BioShock, or Red Dead Redemption, depending on whether you prefer science fiction, a compact atmospheric setting, or a Western.
- For open-ended exploration: Fallout 3 and Skyrim offer room to set your own pace; Grand Theft Auto V takes that freedom into a modern crime setting.
- For a challenge: Pick Dark Souls or Dark Souls III for demanding action RPG play.
- For strategy or stealth: Choose XCOM: Enemy Unknown for turn-based decisions or Dishonored for a mission-based stealth-action approach.
What the 2016 boundary means—and what it does not
In April 2016, Xbox executive Phil Spencer said Microsoft had decided to stop manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles. That marked a transition in hardware production; it was not a statement that all software releases or support had ended. Microsoft’s 2015 anniversary retrospective reported more than 78 billion gaming hours played, nearly 486 billion Gamerscore, 27 billion achievements, and more than 25 billion hours spent in apps. These are company-reported cumulative figures from 2016, not measures of any one game’s quality. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 retrospective
Backward compatibility is a separate question from whether a game belongs in this list. In June 2016, Microsoft said the Xbox One backward-compatible library then contained 209 titles; that is a dated snapshot, not a current catalog count or a guarantee that any particular Xbox 360 game works on newer hardware. Buying or replaying Xbox 360 games today
Physical Xbox 360 games and accessories were sold at launch, but historical availability does not establish present-day stock or condition. For a used disc, check the region and edition, inspect the disc condition, and verify that the game is compatible with the hardware you intend to use. A later port or remaster may differ from the original Xbox 360 release, so confirm the platform named on the listing.
