The best choice depends on whether you want the standard Xbox layout, wired value, premium wireless controls or a retro shape.
For most players, the standard Xbox Wireless Controller is the simplest first-party option. Choose the wired PowerA FUSION Pro 4 for the strongest feature-to-price balance, the PowerA FUSION Pro Wireless with Lumectra when you want premium wireless adjustment, or the Hyperkin DuchesS if you specifically prefer the original Xbox Controller S shape.

Do Xbox Series X|S controllers have a headphone jack?
Yes. All Xbox Series X|S controllers include a built-in 3.5 mm stereo headset jack on the bottom edge. Plug a wired headset into the port until it clicks, and Xbox should detect the headset and route game and chat audio automatically. A current headset-setup guide describes every modern Xbox controller as having this jack and says setup takes about five seconds.
The jack carries both game audio and voice chat through a compatible wired headset. You do not need a separate controller adapter for a normal 3.5 mm plug. Wireless headsets that connect directly to the console or use their own transmitter are a separate category; this guide focuses on controllers that let you connect a headset directly to the gamepad.

Our recommendations by type of player
Best simple first-party choice: Xbox Wireless Controller
The current Xbox Wireless Controller is the baseline recommendation when you want the familiar Xbox arrangement, straightforward console pairing and broad support for official accessories. Its 3.5 mm port is integrated into the standard design, so a wired headset plugs directly into the controller without an additional dongle.
This is the sensible purchase for family rooms, shared consoles and players who do not need rear paddles or adjustable trigger travel. The layout, button labeling and menu behavior match the controller supplied with Xbox consoles, which also makes it the least disruptive replacement when an older pad wears out.
Xbox lists the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 as its premium first-party model. Consider that model only if you specifically want a more configurable first-party controller; the available catalog information does not establish a current price or a complete specification set, so verify those details for your region before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBest wired feature-value option: PowerA FUSION Pro 4
The FUSION Pro 4 is the strongest pick when you play near the console or PC and do not need wireless operation. PowerA lists it at $79.99 and licenses it for Xbox. The package supports Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Its four mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons let you move frequently used actions away from the face buttons. Three-way trigger locks shorten trigger travel for games where quick inputs matter, while the interchangeable Quick-Twist thumbstick system and Hall Effect modules provide more adjustment than a standard controller.
Hall Effect modules use magnetic sensing rather than a conventional physical contact track. That design is intended to reduce wear-related problems, but it is not a guarantee that a controller can never develop drift or another fault. Treat the technology as a durability-oriented feature, not an unlimited warranty.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For headset users, the FUSION Pro 4 combines the 3.5 mm stereo jack with a dedicated headset-volume dial and one-touch microphone mute. Its 10 ft (3 m) braided USB-C cable gives enough reach for a sofa setup, and dual rumble supplies the familiar vibration feedback. The trade-off is permanent cable management: you cannot move around the room without bringing the cable with you.

Best premium wireless option: PowerA FUSION Pro Wireless with Lumectra
The FUSION Pro Wireless with Lumectra is for players who want the FUSION control set without a cable. PowerA lists a $169.99 price and includes a USB wireless adapter for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10/11 wireless use.
The controller has Hall Effect modules, four mappable buttons and three-way trigger locks, so it targets competitive players who value extra inputs and trigger adjustment. The built-in headset dial, one-touch mic mute and 3.5 mm jack preserve the convenience of plugging a wired headset into the gamepad even while the controller itself communicates wirelessly.
An internal rechargeable battery is rated for up to 30 hours. That is a manufacturer estimate rather than a guaranteed runtime; lighting brightness, headset use, vibration and play habits can change the result. A charging stand is included, which makes it easier to put the controller away ready to use.
The principal disadvantages are cost and equipment overhead. You must keep track of the supplied USB adapter and charge the controller, and the Lumectra lighting adds visual effects rather than control functionality. Buy this model when wireless freedom and extensive adjustment justify those trade-offs, not simply because it has a headphone jack.

Best retro-layout alternative: Hyperkin DuchesS
The Hyperkin DuchesS recreates the feel of the original Xbox Controller S rather than following the modern standard shape. Xbox Wire describes it with Hall Effect sticks, impulse triggers, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a detachable 10 ft USB-C cable. It works with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10/11.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
This is the right alternative for players whose hands still prefer the compact, nostalgic Controller S arrangement. Hall Effect sticks add a modern sensing design, while impulse triggers preserve the trigger vibration supported by compatible games. Because it is wired, there is no battery to charge and no wireless adapter to configure.
Stock, price and exact edition can change, so confirm those details at the retailer before ordering. The DuchesS is a shape-driven choice: select it for its layout and cable design, not because its headset connection is different from other current Xbox controllers.
Older clearance option: PowerA FUSION Pro 3
The FUSION Pro 3 remains relevant when you find a good clearance or marketplace listing. Its documented features include four mappable buttons, three-way trigger locks, swappable thumbsticks, dual rumble, Xbox and PC compatibility and a 3.5 mm stereo jack.

Wired or wireless: which is better for headset use?
Choose wired when reliability and simplicity come first
- A wired controller does not need charging during a session.
- The cable carries controller data and power, so there is no wireless adapter to misplace.
- The FUSION Pro 4 and DuchesS provide 10 ft (3 m) cables, useful when the console or PC is several feet from the seat.
- A wired headset still plugs into the controller’s 3.5 mm port, keeping game and chat controls within reach.
The cost is physical cable routing. A long cable can catch on furniture, and a desk player may prefer a shorter lead. Wired connection also limits how far you can sit from the console, although the supplied 3 m cables cover many living-room arrangements.
Choose wireless when movement matters more
- You can sit farther from the console without running a controller cable across the room.
- The FUSION Pro Wireless includes its USB adapter and a charging stand.
- You still retain a 3.5 mm jack for a conventional wired headset.
Wireless adds two management tasks: charging the internal battery and keeping the adapter connected to a compatible USB port. The advertised 30-hour figure applies to the FUSION Pro Wireless as a manufacturer estimate, not to every wireless controller or every usage pattern.

How to use a wired headset with an Xbox controller
- Locate the 3.5 mm port on the bottom edge of the controller.
- Insert the headset plug fully until it clicks into place. A partially inserted plug can leave one channel, the microphone or both unavailable.
- Start or resume the game. Xbox should detect the headset and route audio automatically.
- Open the Xbox guide and select the Audio controls if you need to adjust headset volume, chat mixer balance or output behavior.
- Use the controller’s headset dial or mute button when your model provides one. On the FUSION Pro 4 and FUSION Pro Wireless, the dial changes headset level and the dedicated button mutes the microphone.
The console handles routing; the controller does not require a separate audio driver for a normal analog headset connection. On Windows, confirm that the controller is recognized first and then check the game’s selected input and output devices if chat does not work.
Headset and controller troubleshooting
No game audio
- Remove and reinsert the plug until it clicks.
- Open the Xbox guide’s Audio controls and raise headset volume.
- Check that the chat mixer has not shifted all audio toward chat or game sound.
- Test the headset on another device to rule out a damaged cable or plug.
Friends cannot hear your microphone
- Check the headset’s inline mute switch.
- Press the controller’s one-touch mute button if your model has one.
- Inspect the plug for a four-pole headset connector; a stereo-only plug cannot carry microphone audio.
- Review the game’s own voice-chat permission and input settings after confirming the Xbox guide detects the headset.
Audio cuts out when the cable moves
Intermittent sound usually indicates that the plug is not fully seated, the headset lead is damaged or the controller jack has been stressed. Try a second headset before assuming the controller is defective. With a detachable USB-C controller cable, also test the controller using another known-good data cable if buttons or connection drop out at the same time.
Wireless controller will not connect
For the FUSION Pro Wireless, verify that the supplied USB wireless adapter is connected to the console or PC and that the controller has charge. Reconnect the adapter directly rather than through an unpowered hub while testing. If the controller works by cable but not wirelessly, the issue is connection setup or power rather than the headset jack itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Hall Effect sticks do—and do not—mean
Hall Effect modules measure stick position with magnetic sensors and avoid the traditional contact surfaces used in many analog modules. Manufacturers use that contact-free design as a longevity and drift-resistance advantage. It can be a meaningful reason to choose the FUSION Pro 4, FUSION Pro Wireless or DuchesS over a basic pad.
It does not make a controller immune to every failure. Springs, buttons, firmware, debris, cable sockets and other components can still wear or malfunction. Stick calibration, dead-zone settings and the seller’s warranty remain important even when a product uses Hall Effect hardware.
Which controller should you buy?
- Buy the Xbox Wireless Controller if you want the familiar first-party layout and the least complicated setup.
- Buy the PowerA FUSION Pro 4 if you play wired and want four rear inputs, trigger locks, Hall Effect modules and headset controls for a listed $79.99.
- Buy the PowerA FUSION Pro Wireless with Lumectra if cable-free play, a charging stand and extensive adjustment justify its listed $169.99 price and adapter requirement.
- Buy the Hyperkin DuchesS if the original Controller S shape is more comfortable to you than the modern Xbox silhouette.
- Consider the FUSION Pro 3 only as clearance stock because the manufacturer’s page currently lists it as out of stock.
Every option above provides the essential 3.5 mm connection for a wired headset. The meaningful differences are how the controller connects to the console, how much control customization you need, which shape fits your hands and whether the current price and stock justify the purchase.

Questions readers often ask
Where is the headphone jack on an Xbox controller?
It is on the bottom edge of current Xbox Series X|S controllers, between the controller’s lower grips. The port accepts a standard 3.5 mm headset plug.
Can I use a headset with a third-party Xbox controller?
Yes, provided the controller is licensed or designed for Xbox and includes a 3.5 mm stereo jack. The FUSION Pro 4, FUSION Pro Wireless, FUSION Pro 3 and Hyperkin DuchesS all document this connection.
Does a headset jack mean the controller is wireless?
No. The jack describes audio connectivity, not the controller’s console connection. The FUSION Pro 4 and DuchesS are wired, while the standard Xbox Wireless Controller and FUSION Pro Wireless communicate wirelessly.
Can I use the controller’s jack with a PC?
The FUSION Pro models and DuchesS document Windows 10/11 compatibility. After connecting the controller, select it and the headset microphone as the active devices in Windows and in the game when automatic selection does not occur.
Is a Hall Effect controller guaranteed never to develop stick drift?
No. Hall Effect sensing reduces reliance on contact surfaces, but it cannot guarantee that every other component will last indefinitely or that calibration will never change. Treat it as a design advantage rather than a promise of failure-proof operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will any 3.5 mm headset work with these controllers?
A standard wired headset with a compatible 3.5 mm plug should provide audio, while microphone support requires a four-pole headset connection and an intact inline microphone. Headsets with unusual adapters or separate microphone and headphone plugs may need the appropriate splitter or may not be supported directly.
Do I need Xbox-specific headphones for the controller jack?
No. The controller jack uses the common 3.5 mm headset format. Compatibility depends on the plug wiring, microphone support and the headset’s condition rather than an Xbox-only branding requirement.
Is the PowerA FUSION Pro Wireless battery life guaranteed at 30 hours?
No. Up to 30 hours is the manufacturer’s estimate for that model. Lighting, vibration, headset use and other settings can change actual runtime.
