Best Xbox Elite Series 2 Settings for FPS, Racing, and Accessibility

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best Xbox Elite Series 2 setup is a profile matched to the game, not a single universal sensitivity number. For FPS games, prioritize rapid trigger actuation, a controllable right stick, and paddle mappings that keep your thumb on the aim stick. For racing, preserve full trigger travel for throttle and brake modulation, then use comfortable steering tension and shift paddles. For accessibility, start with the controls the player can reach consistently, remap around fatigue or limited motion, and verify that the game supports any keyboard mapping you use.

The Xbox Accessories app lets you save three custom profiles alongside the default profile, with button remapping, deadzone adjustment and stick-sensitivity curves. The controller also provides three physical stick-tension settings, adjustable trigger-lock positions, interchangeable toppers and paddles, and up to 40 hours of rechargeable battery life. The settings below are practical starting points based on those controls; they are not universal tested values for every game.

What the Elite Series 2 can change

Before tuning, separate settings controlled in software from adjustments made on the controller itself. The distinction matters because a game may apply its own deadzone, sensitivity or input rules after the controller profile has done its work.

Xbox Accessories app controls

  • Button mapping: Microsoft documents assignable inputs including A, B, X, Y, the D-pad, bumpers, triggers, stick clicks and all four rear paddles.
  • Deadzone: You can change how far a stick must move before the game receives input. A smaller deadzone can feel more immediate but leaves less tolerance for mechanical drift.
  • Stick-sensitivity curves: A curve changes how quickly output rises as you move a stick. This lets you trade fast response near center for finer control, or the reverse.
  • Profile storage: The controller stores three custom profiles plus one default profile. The Profile button switches among the saved slots while you play.

Physical controls

The Elite Series 2 has three thumbstick-tension settings. It includes shorter hair-trigger-lock positions, interchangeable thumbstick toppers, interchangeable D-pads and four removable paddles. Microsoft lists the controller at 345 g with a tolerance of plus or minus 15 g when fitted with four paddles, a faceted D-pad and standard thumbsticks. Battery life is rated at up to 40 hours of rechargeable use; actual time varies with use and conditions.

Xbox Wireless Gaming Controller | Elite Series 2 Core | Robot White |
  • PLAY LIKE A PRO — The XBOX Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Core delivers pro-level precision, durability, and control with adjustable-tension thumbsticks, shorter hair trigger locks, and a wrap-around rubberized grip.
  • DESIGNED WITH XBOX DESIGN LAB — This XBOX Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Core in Robot White was designed with XBOX Design Lab, the only official platform for custom XBOX controllers. Featuring a distinctive color combination across the top case, bumpers, triggers, and ABXY buttons.
  • ADJUSTABLE-TENSION THUMBSTICKS — Fine-tune your aim with thumbsticks that let you adjust resistance for improved accuracy, consistency, and control in every match.
  • SHORTER HAIR TRIGGER LOCKS — Fire faster and react quicker with three-step hair trigger locks that reduce pull distance for rapid input in competitive gameplay.
  • CORE ESSENTIALS — Includes just the components you need to unleash your best game. Add even more customization with the Complete Component Pack, sold separately, for extra paddles, thumbsticks, a D-pad, carrying case, and charging dock.

Use software and hardware together. For example, a shorter trigger lock changes travel mechanically, while the game’s trigger response remains a separate software choice. Likewise, a tall topper changes leverage and reach, while a sensitivity curve changes the signal sent to the game.

Set up profiles before tuning a game

  1. Connect the controller to your Xbox console or a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, then open the Xbox Accessories app.
  2. Create a new profile or edit an existing one. Assign it to Slot 1, Slot 2 or Slot 3; leave the default profile unchanged as a neutral fallback.
  3. Choose the physical parts you can use comfortably: stick toppers, D-pad and paddles. Use the included adjustment tool to change thumbstick tension.
  4. Set button mappings, deadzones and stick curves in the app. Make one meaningful change at a time so you can identify what helped or hurt.
  5. Test every mapped input in the app and then in the target game. Keyboard mappings have an app test tool, but an app test cannot prove that a particular game accepts the resulting key.
  6. While playing, press the Profile button to move between the default profile and your saved slots. Keep a known-good profile available if a game reacts unexpectedly.

Give each profile a clear purpose, such as “FPS,” “Racing” or “Low-reach.” A purpose-based name makes it easier to remember which physical and software choices belong together.

Best starting profile for FPS games

FPS play usually rewards fast actions without sacrificing precise right-stick control. The following setup is a starting direction, not a promise of a particular accuracy or kill rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recommended FPS hardware

  • Trigger locks: Start with the short trigger-lock position when rapid firing matters. It reduces the amount of travel required to actuate the trigger.
  • Right-stick tension: Begin at medium or high tension if your aim feels loose or you over-correct. Lower tension can feel faster, but it may be harder to stop on a small target.
  • Right-stick topper: Try a tall topper only if the extra leverage gives your hand finer aiming control. If it makes quick turns awkward, return to the standard topper.
  • Paddles: Put actions that normally require leaving the right stick on rear paddles. Jump, crouch or slide, reload and interact are useful candidates, but the best four depend on the game and your hand position.

FPS mapping example

Controller input Useful starting assignment Reason to choose it
Left rear paddle Jump Lets you change elevation while keeping the aim stick covered.
Right rear paddle Crouch or slide Supports movement changes without moving your thumb to a face button.
Additional paddle Reload or interact Shortens the reach for frequent contextual actions.
Fourth paddle Your most-used game-specific action Reserve it for an input that causes repeated thumb travel or hand strain.

If a paddle is difficult to press without an accidental activation, move that function to another paddle or remove the paddle. More assignments are not automatically better; reliable presses are the goal.

Deadzone and curve tuning for FPS

  1. Check the game’s own stick-deadzone setting before changing the controller profile. Some games apply a second deadzone, so a very small value in both places can make drift visible.
  2. Use the smallest controller deadzone that does not produce movement when the stick is released. Test while the character is stationary, then test slow walking and aiming.
  3. Start with the game’s normal or default sensitivity and change only the curve first. A curve that gives more control near center can help fine aim; a faster curve can help rapid turns.
  4. After each change, perform the same short test: track a moving target, make a 180-degree turn, and make small corrections on a distant target. Keep the change only if it improves one task without making the others unreliable.
  5. Recheck drift after changing tension or toppers. Mechanical feel and software response interact, so a setting that was stable with one stick setup may need a different deadzone with another.

Official Xbox documentation describes the available controls but does not publish one best numeric sensitivity or deadzone for every title. Treat any number you choose as a personal starting point tied to your game, stick condition and hand control.

FPS trigger and paddle checks

  • Confirm that the trigger lock still permits every required action, including aiming, charging or alternate-fire behaviors that need analog travel.
  • Check that both stick clicks remain reachable if you use them for sprint, melee or another movement action.
  • Play a short session before changing several controls. If your aim is stable but movement is tiring, change the movement mapping rather than the aim curve.

Best starting profile for racing games

Racing games use the triggers as analog controls. Full travel gives you more physical range for throttle and brake modulation, so the FPS trigger-lock position is usually the wrong choice when smooth acceleration and braking matter.

Recommended racing hardware

  • Triggers: Leave both triggers at full travel when you need gradual throttle and brake control.
  • Steering stick: Choose the tension that makes steering smooth rather than twitchy. Lower tension may feel quick; higher tension can make small steering corrections easier to hold.
  • Thumbstick topper: Use the topper that lets you make repeatable steering corrections without stretching your thumb. A taller topper is optional, not a requirement.
  • Face buttons and paddles: Keep controls used during a race within reach. Map paddles to manual upshift and downshift when the game supports those actions.

Racing mapping example

Input Starting assignment When to change it
Left paddle Manual downshift Move it if your hand naturally reaches the opposite side during cornering.
Right paddle Manual upshift Swap sides if the game’s shift direction or your hand position makes the current layout awkward.
Remaining paddle Look back, handbrake or another frequent race control Use only if it can be pressed without disturbing steering.

Xbox specifically presents Forza Horizon 5 as a racing example and describes paddle customization for manual shifting. The exact control names and available assists still depend on the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Racing test sequence

  1. Drive a familiar section with triggers at full travel. Practice holding a steady partial throttle, then brake progressively rather than tapping.
  2. Test the same section with each stick-tension setting. Choose the setting that lets you hold a line and make small corrections without fighting the stick.
  3. Use paddles for shifting if manual transmission is enabled. Confirm that an accidental paddle press does not interrupt steering or camera control.
  4. Save the profile only after testing a complete lap or equivalent uninterrupted run. A layout that feels good in a menu may be uncomfortable under sustained steering.

Build an accessibility-focused profile

Accessibility tuning starts with the player’s reliable reach and control, not with a conventional competitive layout. The Elite Series 2 can reduce reach, change the effort needed for an action and move controls away from a difficult-to-use area, but every game must still accept the resulting input.

  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Seamlessly connect and play on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC with USB-C connectivity and Bluetooth wireless technology

Start with reach and fatigue

  • List the inputs the player can press consistently, including which fingers can operate paddles and which face buttons are difficult to reach.
  • Map frequent or time-sensitive actions to the easiest reliable inputs. A paddle is useful only if its position and force are comfortable for that player.
  • Remove assignments that cause accidental presses. An unassigned paddle is preferable to a control that repeatedly triggers the wrong action.
  • Use a dedicated profile so the accessibility layout does not overwrite a family member’s or another game’s controls.

Use stick and layout options strategically

Stick-swap and sensitivity-curve options can reduce the need to reach for a particular side or can make a limited range of motion more useful. Change one stick at a time, then test movement, camera control and menus. If a curve makes small motions easier but prevents a full turn, choose a less aggressive curve or compensate with the game’s own sensitivity setting.

Trigger locks can reduce travel for a player who benefits from a shorter press, but full travel may be necessary for games that use analog trigger depth. Keep a separate profile for games with different trigger requirements instead of forcing one compromise layout.

Controller-to-keyboard mapping

Xbox Wire reported on August 3, 2023 that the Xbox Accessories app supports controller-to-keyboard input mapping on PC and console for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller. This can assign a controller button or paddle to a keyboard key when a supported game accepts keyboard input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keyboard support is game dependent; a mapped key will not create a function that the game itself does not recognize.
  • Bluetooth keyboard mapping on PC is not supported, according to the documented limitations. Use a supported connection and configuration instead.
  • Test the mapping in the Xbox Accessories app, then test the actual action in the game. Menus, gameplay and chat systems may handle keyboard input differently.

For a low-reach profile, assign only the keys needed for the target game. Keeping a small, understandable set makes troubleshooting easier and reduces accidental activations.

How to tune deadzones and curves without guessing

Deadzone and curve controls are easy to over-adjust because a change can feel dramatic in a menu but behave differently in play. Use a repeatable method.

Find the minimum stable deadzone

  1. Release the stick and observe whether the game character, cursor or camera moves.
  2. If there is no movement, lower the deadzone one step in the controller profile and test again.
  3. Stop lowering it when drift appears, then raise it slightly until the released stick remains still.
  4. Check the game’s own deadzone setting. If both layers are adjustable, avoid making both extremely low without a reason.

This process is a stability check, not a claim that the smallest possible value is best. A player who needs a larger intentional movement may prefer more deadzone, and a worn stick may require a larger value over time.

Choose a curve by task

  • Fine aiming or precise steering: Favor a curve that gives manageable output near the center, then verify that full-range turns remain possible.
  • Fast camera turns: Favor a quicker response, but test whether small corrections become jumpy.
  • Limited motion: Try a curve that produces useful output earlier in the stick’s travel, provided it does not make the control overly sensitive.

Do not change sensitivity, deadzone and curve simultaneously. If you do, you cannot tell which adjustment created a new problem.

Choose the right physical configuration

Decision Start here Trade-off to watch
Trigger travel Short lock for rapid FPS actions; full travel for racing modulation. Short travel may be unsuitable for analog trigger functions.
Stick tension Medium or high for steadier FPS aim; whichever setting feels smooth for racing. Higher tension can feel slower or require more effort; lower tension can feel twitchy.
Right-stick topper Use a tall topper only when it improves fine control for your hand. Extra height can make quick turns or reach uncomfortable.
Paddles Map frequent actions that otherwise pull the thumb from a stick. Too many or poorly placed paddles increase accidental presses.
D-pad Choose the interchangeable D-pad that gives reliable directional presses in the game. A shape that feels good for one game may be less comfortable for another.

Profile switching and maintenance

Keep Slot 1 for the game you play most often, Slot 2 for a different control style and Slot 3 for accessibility or experimental changes. The default profile is useful for diagnosing whether a problem comes from the custom profile or from the game itself.

  • SAVE AND SWITCH PROFILES — Save up to 3 custom profiles on the controller and switch between them on the fly with the dedicated Profile button. Even pick which color the XBOX button lights up as.

When a game update changes controls, review every assignment rather than assuming the old profile still matches. Re-test triggers, stick clicks and paddles after changing physical parts. If a new profile feels wrong, switch to the default with the Profile button, confirm the game responds normally, then edit the custom slot instead of changing several settings during a match.

Troubleshooting common problems

The character or camera moves with the stick released

Increase the affected stick’s deadzone gradually, and check whether the game has a separate deadzone setting. Re-test after changing the topper or tension, because the physical setup can alter how easily you rest on the stick.

A trigger action no longer works correctly

Return the trigger to full travel and test again. Some games need analog depth for throttle, brake, charge or alternate-fire behavior. Keep a full-travel profile for those games and a short-lock profile for rapid-actuation games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A paddle mapping does nothing

Confirm the paddle is assigned in the correct profile slot, then test it in the Xbox Accessories app and in the game. If it is a keyboard mapping, verify that the game supports keyboard input and that you are not relying on unsupported Bluetooth keyboard mapping on PC.

The controller feels fast but imprecise

Raise right-stick tension, return to a shorter or standard topper, or choose a curve with more control near center. Change one factor at a time and repeat the same aiming or steering test.

The controller feels accurate but too slow

Try lower stick tension, a faster curve or a different topper. Confirm that the change does not make small corrections jumpy, and keep the previous profile in another slot until the new one proves comfortable.

A practical decision guide

  • Choose the FPS profile when rapid trigger actuation and keeping the aim thumb on the stick are more important than analog trigger travel.
  • Choose the racing profile when progressive throttle and braking, smooth steering and reachable shift controls matter most.
  • Choose the accessibility profile when reach, fatigue, one-handed operation or a need for keyboard-key mapping determines the layout.
  • Use the default profile when troubleshooting a game, checking whether a custom curve is causing a problem or handing the controller to another player.

The Elite Series 2 gives you enough independent choices to make these profiles distinct: trigger travel, stick tension, topper height, paddle placement, deadzone, curve and button mapping. Tune for the action that fails first in the target game, test the complete control loop, and save only settings that remain reliable over a full session.
