The best independent and smaller-studio games on Xbox Game Pass depend on the mood you want. Start with Hades II for demanding, replayable combat; Tiny Bookshop for a gentle management game; Until Then or Sopa: Tale of the Stolen Potato for story; Dorfromantik for relaxed strategy; and Ratshaker for a short, strange experiment. The wider shortlist below covers action, platforming, card-based strategy, multiplayer, puzzles, driving, and narrative adventures.

What counts as an independent or smaller-studio Game Pass game?
Xbox uses ID@Xbox to bring games from independent publishers and developers to its platforms and to promote selected titles through Game Pass. Xbox describes ID@Xbox as “Bringing great games from independent publishers to XBOX.” Its monthly Indie Selects features are editorial recommendations, not review scores or a legal certification that every studio meets a particular definition of “small.”
That distinction matters because “best indie game” is preference-dependent. A two-hour experimental game can be a better choice than a 40-hour campaign when you have one evening free, while a systems-heavy roguelike may provide more value if you want months of repeatable play. The picks below are organized around what you want to do, not an attempt to rank unlike games on one scale.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Best for action, challenge and deep systems
Hades II: the strongest all-round action recommendation
Hades II is the pick for players who want fast combat that remains interesting after a failed run. Supergiant’s action roguelike sends you back into the Underworld repeatedly, with each attempt built around different choices, upgrades and encounters. Xbox’s April 7, 2026 Game Pass update describes it as endlessly replayable and says the story reacts to setbacks and accomplishments. Failure therefore advances both your mechanical understanding and the narrative rather than simply resetting progress.
Choose it when you enjoy learning enemy patterns, experimenting with builds and improving through repetition. It is less suitable if you want a linear campaign with a fixed difficulty curve or a game that can be completed without revisiting earlier areas. Xbox lists cloud, Xbox Series X|S, handheld and PC Game Pass support in that update. A controller is the natural setup for console, cloud and handheld play, while PC players should choose whichever control method gives them reliable movement and attack timing.
Replaced: cinematic pixel-art action
Replaced comes from Sad Cat Studios and combines a 2.5D action-platforming structure with a deliberately cinematic presentation. Xbox’s description centers on R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence trapped in a human body, in an alternate-1980s cyberpunk thriller. The appeal is the contrast between precise platforming and a story delivered through striking pixel art, lighting and set-piece staging.
This is the best choice here for someone who wants an authored, story-led experience rather than an endless systems loop. It was listed as a day-one release for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, so subscribers on other tiers should check the live listing rather than assume inclusion. Expect the strongest fit on a large screen with headphones if you want to appreciate the audiovisual direction; Xbox’s Game Pass release notes specifically encourage players to bring headphones for games with notable soundtracks.
Vampire Crawlers: cards, dungeons and turn-based decisions
Vampire Crawlers is a day-one turn-based roguelite card game presented as a “blobber,” a format built around dungeon exploration and party or character positioning. Xbox describes deck building, dungeon crawling and a choice between tactical or faster turns. That makes it a useful alternative to real-time roguelikes: you can pause to consider a card, route or encounter instead of relying on reflexes.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Pick it if you like assembling a build from limited options and making decisions whose consequences appear several rooms later. The procedural structure supports repeat runs, but the pace and card interactions may feel slower than Hades II. Xbox lists cloud, Xbox Series X|S, handheld and PC access in its April 2026 notes.
Super Meat Boy 3D: precision platforming in a new dimension
Super Meat Boy 3D is the latest entry in the established indie platforming series and shifts its difficult platforming into 3D. It is aimed at players who enjoy short attempts, immediate restarts and the satisfaction of converting a failed sequence into a clean run. The challenge is the point: this is not a low-pressure exploration game.
Use it when you want a clear mechanical test and levels that can be revisited until your execution improves. It is a poor fit if frustration from repeated deaths makes you quit before learning the route. Xbox lists cloud, Series X|S, handheld and PC support.
Kiln: the unusual multiplayer pick
Kiln turns pottery into competitive arena combat. It is a day-one online game in which players sculpt ceramic creations and then use those creations as combat bodies. The premise gives it a distinctive identity among multiplayer Game Pass releases: customization is not merely cosmetic because the thing you shape becomes the thing you fight with.
Choose Kiln when your priority is trying something novel with friends or an online group. Because its value depends on an active player population and network quality, check matchmaking availability in your region before committing to it as your main multiplayer game. Xbox lists cloud, Xbox Series X|S, handheld and PC support.

Dome Keeper is relevant to Game Pass players who already own or can access the base game and want its 2026 multiplayer update. Xbox’s April release notes specify four-player co-op and versus modes. The underlying loop combines mining with defending a vulnerable dome, so teammates must decide when to gather resources, when to return and how to prepare for the next attack.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
This is the practical choice for a group that wants a session-based defense game rather than a story campaign. The update’s four-player figure is an Xbox-stated mode limit; confirm whether your current edition and platform include the multiplayer update.
Best for cozy play, exploration and narrative
Tiny Bookshop: a calm management game with a social setting
Tiny Bookshop asks you to run a seaside second-hand bookshop. You stock books, choose scenic locations and meet local residents, making the shop’s route and the community around it as important as sales. The design is suited to players who enjoy light planning, collecting and conversations without the pressure of a fail-state-heavy economy simulation.
It is the best recommendation for a quiet evening or a handheld session. The seaside setting and mobile shop structure also give it a different rhythm from a conventional store-management game: you are not simply upgrading one permanent building. Xbox lists cloud, Xbox Series X|S, handheld and PC availability.
Sopa: Tale of the Stolen Potato: a gentle story adventure
In Sopa: Tale of the Stolen Potato, Miho enters a magical world while trying to fetch a potato for his grandmother. The setup is intentionally modest, then expands into a narrative adventure about the strange world Miho discovers. Xbox lists cloud, console, handheld and PC access.
Choose it when you want a compact, emotional story with exploration rather than combat mastery. It is a stronger fit for players who value tone, character relationships and a clear journey than for people seeking a deep upgrade tree or competitive challenge.
Until Then: an 18-hour coming-of-age mystery
Until Then is a 2.5D coming-of-age story set in the 2010s Philippines. Its subject matter includes love, grief and friendship, and its everyday interactions include texting and light minigames. A mystery gradually sits underneath the social story, giving the familiar routines a second layer.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Xbox Wire editor Raymond Estrada reported a playthrough of about 18 hours. That is one editor’s experience, not a universal completion-time guarantee; your pace and choices may differ. Choose Until Then when you want a focused, character-led game that can be finished over several evenings rather than an indefinitely replayable system. The pixel-art presentation and phone-based interactions make it especially suitable for players who enjoy contemporary coming-of-age fiction.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Easy Delivery Co.: relaxed driving with secrets
Easy Delivery Co. is a scenic driving game set in a mountain town. You make deliveries, encounter mysterious residents and uncover secrets at your own pace. Its appeal comes from the contrast between an ordinary job and an unusual place: the delivery route is the structure that lets you notice the town and its people.
It belongs on your list if you want exploration without demanding combat or precision platforming. The “in case you missed it” Xbox listing names cloud, Xbox Series X|S, handheld and PC availability. Because the game is built around atmosphere and discovery, it works best when you can play without rushing from objective to objective.

Dorfromantik: five modes for short or long sessions
Dorfromantik is a tile-placement game about building landscapes. Xbox’s September 2025 Indie Selects feature names five modes: Classic, Creative, Quick, Hard and Monthly. That range lets you choose between an objective-driven session, unrestricted building, a faster challenge, a harder ruleset and a recurring format.
It is the best option here for players who want strategy without combat. The central decisions are about tile placement, matching terrain and planning the next expansion, but the presentation remains calm. Use Classic or Quick when you have limited time, Creative when you want to construct without pressure, and Hard when the gentle presentation should conceal a more demanding puzzle.

Monument Valley 3: perspective as the puzzle mechanic
Monument Valley 3, presented by Xbox as an independent-developer release from ustwo games, is a puzzle adventure built around illusion and perspective. You guide Noor through environments affected by rising tides while pursuing the Sacred Light. Paths that appear impossible become usable when the architecture is rotated, aligned or viewed from a different angle.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose it for visual problem-solving and a carefully authored sequence of set pieces. It is less about grinding or optimizing a build than about noticing how a level’s geometry can deceive you. Players who prefer open-ended systems may find it too curated, while puzzle fans get a clear chain of “look again” moments.
Ratshaker: a short game that refuses a neat label
Ratshaker is described in Xbox’s August 2025 roundup as a brief, strange experimental game that resists neat genre labels. That is its selling point. It is not the recommendation to make when you need a known number of hours, a conventional progression system or a familiar genre template.
Play it when you want to sample an idea that may be over before it becomes predictable. Its short-form design makes it a good palate cleanser between longer games and a useful choice for players who browse Game Pass specifically to find something they would not have bought by genre alone.

Platform, tier and controller considerations
Xbox’s April 2026 release notes use several combinations of cloud, Xbox Series X|S, PC, handheld, Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass. Do not infer a universal entitlement from a game appearing in an Xbox editorial roundup. Open the game’s current Game Pass catalog page and check three things: your subscription tier, your device and your region.
- Console: Check that the listing includes Xbox Series X|S if that is your hardware. A cloud listing is not the same as an installed console entitlement.
- PC: Confirm PC Game Pass or the tier named on the listing. Replaced, for example, was specifically announced for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at day one.
- Cloud: Check your network, supported region and controller connection before starting a long session. Timing-sensitive games such as Hades II and Super Meat Boy 3D benefit from responsive input.
- Handheld: Xbox’s 2026 notes list handheld access for several titles, but the exact device and entitlement still need to be confirmed in the live catalog.
- Accessories: A controller is the practical common denominator for console, cloud and handheld play. On PC, a keyboard and mouse may suit menus or strategy games, while a controller is often more comfortable for action and platforming.
A simple way to build a personal shortlist
- Pick your time budget. For a brief experiment, choose Ratshaker. For a finite narrative, choose Until Then. For an ongoing game, choose Hades II or Dorfromantik.
- Decide whether failure is part of the appeal. Hades II, Vampire Crawlers and Super Meat Boy 3D expect repeated attempts. Choose Tiny Bookshop, Easy Delivery Co. or Monument Valley 3 for lower-pressure play.
- Choose your input demand. Action and precision platforming reward responsive controls; tile placement, text interactions and narrative exploration are more forgiving of slower input.
- Check who is playing. The narrative and puzzle games are solo recommendations. Choose Kiln for online arena play or Dome Keeper when your group wants up to four-player co-op or versus modes.
- Verify the live listing. Confirm tier, region, platform and whether a multiplayer update or base game is included before installing.
Why these games are worth checking even if you are tired of AAA releases
The shortlist demonstrates how much variety sits outside large-budget conventions. Hades II builds depth through repeated runs instead of a huge open world. Tiny Bookshop makes a small seaside business its entire setting. Sopa turns a family errand into a magical journey, while Until Then finds drama in messages, friendships and everyday routines. Dorfromantik makes landscape planning the main event, and Ratshaker treats unfamiliarity as the reason to play.
That variety is the practical value of using ID@Xbox and Game Pass together: you can move from a demanding action game to a quiet puzzle or a brief experiment without buying each one separately. The right first download is the one whose structure matches the way you want to spend your next session.
