You can still buy some Xbox 360 and original Xbox games through the modern Microsoft Store, but only when Microsoft has included them in its selective backward-compatibility catalog. Games outside that catalog may require an Xbox 360 disc, a later compilation or remaster—or may have no legitimate Xbox purchase route at all.
The important change: the Xbox 360 store is already closed
Microsoft ended new purchases of Xbox 360 games, downloadable content and other entertainment on July 29, 2024. The closure does not erase games you already own: Microsoft says previously purchased content remains playable, subject to the hardware and services needed to run it. The change affects buying, not ownership.

That distinction matters because an old Xbox 360 listing is no longer a reliable buying route. A title that appears in an old web search may lead to an unavailable page, while a game that disappeared can occasionally reappear in the current Xbox Store and then vanish again. A 2026 report documented that exact pattern. Treat every listing as time-sensitive and check the purchase button immediately before paying.
There is therefore no single, permanent “last chance” list. The best purchases are the titles that meet your needs and have a currently valid route: modern digital purchase, a physical release, or both.

How to decide which Xbox games are worth securing
Classify each candidate before you spend money. The classification tells you how urgent the purchase is and which console you will need.

Microsoft’s compatibility is selective, not automatic. Only games in the published Xbox 360 and original Xbox compatibility catalog work on Xbox One. Ownership of an Xbox 360 game does not by itself make that game playable on a newer console.
What “best” means after the shutdown
Choose games for preservation value rather than assuming a high review score guarantees availability. A strong purchase candidate generally has several of these qualities:
- It is currently listed for purchase on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or Xbox.com.
- Microsoft identifies it as backward compatible, so you can use a newer console.
- It is digital-only or has an unusually expensive physical copy, making the active digital listing especially valuable.
- Its original online, downloadable or licensed content is still usable enough for your intended play.
- There is no clearly superior compilation or remaster that already includes it.
- You specifically want the original version rather than a later revision with changed music, menus, balance or multiplayer features.
Do not confuse scarcity with quality. A delisted game is not automatically better, and a game with a disc release is not automatically safe: discs can become expensive, damaged or regionally hard to find.
The three buying groups to prioritize
1. Digital games still sold through backward compatibility
These are the easiest purchases for Xbox One and Xbox Series owners. Open the game’s current Microsoft Store page on the console or Xbox.com and confirm that the edition is purchasable, not merely visible in your library. If you already own a supported digital title, Microsoft says it appears in the Ready to Install section on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

Check the exact edition. A product page can represent a base game, a bundle or an add-on. Downloadable content may have separate compatibility and licensing rules. If you need a particular expansion, verify that expansion’s listing rather than assuming it transfers with the base game.
2. Games with an Xbox 360 disc or later physical edition
A disc gives you a fallback when digital commerce disappears. It is also the only practical route for some games that never entered the modern catalog. Search for the original Xbox 360 release, then check whether a compilation, remaster or publisher collection contains the same title.

Physical ownership does not override compatibility. An Xbox 360 disc runs on an Xbox 360; it runs on Xbox One or Xbox Series only when Microsoft lists that specific game as backward compatible. Newer consoles may download a compatibility package after you insert the disc, but the disc normally remains the license check.
3. Digital-only games that are not in the catalog
These are the most vulnerable. If a game has no disc, compilation or remaster and is absent from Microsoft’s current catalog, there may be no legitimate way to buy it after a listing disappears. A previously purchased copy can remain playable on the account and console for which it is supported, but a new buyer cannot rely on account transfers, codes from unknown sellers or unofficial downloads.
Step-by-step: verify a game before buying
- Start with the exact title and edition. Record the full name, whether it is an Xbox 360 or original Xbox release, and whether you want the base game, a bundle or specific downloadable content.
- Check the modern Microsoft Store. Search on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, or on Xbox.com while signed into the account that will own the game. Look for an active purchase option and the supported-platform information.
- Confirm compatibility in Microsoft’s catalog. Compatibility is selective. If the game is not listed, do not assume that an Xbox One or Xbox Series console will run it.
- Test the ownership path. If you bought the title previously, open My games & apps, choose Full library, then Owned games or Ready to Install. A title appearing there confirms account ownership; it does not prove that a new purchase is available.
- Check downloadable content separately. Read the add-on list and confirm that the content is sold in your region and works with the edition you selected.
- Look for a physical fallback. Search for an Xbox 360 disc, a later compilation or a remaster. Compare the edition’s contents with the original product.
- Record the result and date. Storefront status can change. Save the product name, platform, edition and the date you verified it so you know which information may need rechecking.
- Buy only through a legitimate route. Use the active Microsoft listing or a clearly identified physical copy. Avoid sellers offering questionable download codes for delisted Xbox 360 products.

Why some games disappear sooner than others
Licensing is a major risk. Music, sports leagues, films, television properties and branded vehicles can require contracts that expire. When a publisher cannot renew those rights, it may remove the game even if the software itself still works.

Older games can also disappear because the publisher no longer maintains a listing, a payment entitlement or the supporting online service. None of these causes is a guarantee that a particular title will be removed, but each is a reason to verify availability rather than postpone a purchase.
The estimated scale is substantial: Video Games Chronicle calculated in 2023 that more than 220 digital-only games could disappear from commerce after the shutdown because they lacked a current disc or backward-compatible purchase path. That figure is an independent estimate, not an official Microsoft total, and it should not be read as a definitive count of every unavailable game.
Buying physical Xbox 360 copies safely
When digital purchase is unavailable, a physical Xbox 360 copy may be the most durable option. Inspect the listing before paying:
- Disc condition: Ask for clear photos of the playing surface. Deep scratches, cracks around the center ring and resurfacing can cause read failures.
- Completeness: Confirm whether the case, manual, second disc or installation disc is included. Some editions require multiple discs.
- Region: Xbox 360 discs and downloadable content can have regional differences. Verify that the disc matches your console region and that any required add-on is sold in the same region.
- Code status: Treat included one-time codes as potentially expired or already redeemed. The disc itself may still be useful, but do not pay extra for an unverified code.
- Compatibility: Check Microsoft’s catalog for newer-console support before assuming a disc will work on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- Price: Compare several listings. Scarcity can inflate a seller’s asking price without improving the game’s condition or completeness.
A compatible Xbox 360 console is the secondary hardware path when a chosen title is not playable on newer Xbox consoles. Factor in the console’s condition, storage, controller compatibility and the possibility that online features no longer operate.
How to handle games with licenses or online dependence
Music and movie licenses
Licensed soundtracks and film properties can be removed from sale while existing owners retain play access. If the game is important to your collection, buy a legitimate copy while available and keep the original installation media or account access details.

Sports and annual releases
Sports games often have short commercial windows and server-dependent features. A disc may preserve the offline modes, but online matchmaking, leaderboards and roster services can end independently of store availability. Read the product description for the modes you actually intend to use.
Downloadable content
Do not assume that a preserved base game preserves every add-on. Record the exact DLC names you need and verify each one. If an add-on is unavailable, a compilation or complete edition may be the only legitimate way to obtain equivalent content.

Keep a simple spreadsheet or note with the title, edition, modern digital status, compatibility result, physical route, DLC requirements, region and verification date. This prevents buying a duplicate edition and makes it obvious which games need attention first.
Common mistakes and fixes
“I found an old store link, so I can buy it.”
An old page may be an archive, a broken listing or a product that has temporarily reappeared. Sign in and look for a current purchase control. If there is no valid transaction path, the page is not a dependable buying option.

Compatibility is selective. Check Microsoft’s catalog for the exact title. If it is absent, plan on an Xbox 360 or a later reissue.

“A disc guarantees newer-console support.”
It does not. Newer consoles require Microsoft’s compatibility support for that game. Verify before buying hardware or an expensive disc.
“The base game includes all its DLC.”
Many releases separate add-ons. Inspect the edition and add-on listings, and treat included codes as unverified until redeemed.
“A marketplace code is equivalent to a normal purchase.”
Codes can be region-locked, expired or already redeemed. Use the current Microsoft Store or a clearly tested physical copy instead of paying a premium for uncertain credentials.

What to recheck immediately before publication or purchase
Because 2026 reporting has recorded delisted Xbox 360 games briefly returning and then disappearing, recheck the individual listing at the moment you buy. Confirm the title, edition, region, platform support and DLC one last time. A status recorded weeks earlier is useful for planning, but not proof that a transaction will still be available.
Bottom line for Xbox collectors
The old Xbox 360 storefront is no longer the place to shop. Start with the modern Microsoft Store and Microsoft’s compatibility catalog, then use an Xbox 360 disc or a later compilation when digital support is absent. Prioritize digital-only games and licensed titles that are currently purchasable, but never assume that a visible page, an old ownership guide or a disc guarantees future access. Verify the exact edition and platform on the day you buy.
