If you want to play Xbox Series S-optimized games directly from added storage, choose a compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card. A USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD is useful for backward-compatible games and for storing or transferring optimized games, but optimized games on USB generally need to be moved to the console’s internal storage or an expansion card before you can play them.
Compare the options by how you want to use them
| Option | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Seagate Storage Expansion Card | Playing optimized Series X|S games from added storage | Microsoft lists 1TB and 2TB selections and names Xbox Series S as compatible. Check local price and availability. |
| WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card | Playing optimized Series X|S games from added storage | Western Digital describes it as officially licensed for Xbox and supports playing and storing optimized games, with capacity up to 2TB. Check local price and availability. |
| USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD | Adding capacity for backward-compatible games, or keeping games stored for transfer | Optimized games stored on USB generally need to be moved to internal storage or a compatible expansion card before play. |
Start with the use case: direct play of optimized games calls for an expansion card; archive and transfer space can be served by USB storage. Then compare capacity and the price and stock available in your market. Prices and availability vary by region and date, so there is no universal cheapest choice.
Expansion cards are the direct-play choice for optimized games
Microsoft says its Storage Expansion Cards add storage matching the internal SSD’s performance. Its Xbox product page lists Series S compatibility for Seagate’s 1TB and 2TB cards. Western Digital documents the WD_BLACK C50 as Xbox-licensed, with support for playing and storing Xbox Series X|S-optimized games and capacity up to 2TB.
Series S is sold in 512GB and 1TB internal-storage configurations. Microsoft does not promise one universal amount of free usable space, so check the available space on your own console rather than assuming the full advertised capacity is free for games.

USB drives are useful, but not a substitute for direct play
Microsoft lists USB 3.1 external HDD support for Series S. USB storage can provide extra room for compatible older games and can hold optimized games while you make space on the console. Seagate’s support guidance says optimized games on a USB drive must be moved to internal storage or a Seagate Storage Expansion Card to play. In practice, plan for a transfer step rather than expecting a USB HDD or SSD to replace an expansion card for optimized games.
Xbox Wire’s storage primer says Quick Resume works whether a game is played from the internal SSD, an expansion card, or external USB storage. That does not mean every optimized game can be launched from USB: use the direct-play compatibility distinction above when choosing where to keep a particular game.
