For the currently available Xbox version of Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, use your display’s native output, set the console to 60 Hz, and treat HDR as optional. The game is an Xbox One release running through backward compatibility on Xbox Series X|S. Independent Xbox One X testing reported a presentation of approximately 1080p at 30 frames per second, and no authoritative evidence establishes a selectable 4K, 60 FPS, HDR, or performance mode for that version.
Series X|S hardware can improve loading and image processing for selected backward-compatible games, but those platform features do not automatically turn this title into a 4K/60 FPS game. Series X and Series S also follow different backward-compatibility baselines, so their expected image quality is not identical.

Recommended settings at a glance
| Setting | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Console output resolution | 4K UHD when connected to a 4K television or monitor; otherwise use the display’s native supported mode | 1440p on a compatible 1440p display, or 1080p for a Full HD display | Only the console’s output signal; it does not prove that the game renders internally at that resolution |
| Refresh rate | 60 Hz | 60 Hz | Matches the documented 30 FPS presentation without implying a 60 or 120 FPS mode |
| HDR | Optional; keep it off if the image looks gray, dim, or over-bright | Optional under the same condition | HDR support for the original Xbox release is not established; Auto HDR is selective |
| In-game performance mode | No verified quality/performance selector | No verified quality/performance selector | Do not expect a menu toggle that changes resolution or frame rate |
| Expected frame rate | Approximately 30 FPS based on Xbox One X observations | 30 FPS is the sensible expectation for the Xbox One S compatibility baseline | Series X|S compatibility enhancements are selective, not a guarantee of 60 FPS |
These recommendations apply to the Xbox One version available before the planned dedicated Series X|S release reported for December 8, 2026. If you install that later build, use its own patch notes and graphics menu rather than carrying these assumptions forward.
What version runs on Series X|S?
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey launched for the Xbox One family, including Xbox One X, and the Xbox Store lists it as playable on Xbox Series X|S. On current consoles, that means you are generally running the Xbox One game through backward compatibility rather than a native Series X|S edition.

Series X compatibility path
The useful comparison baseline for Series X is the Xbox One X version. Windows Central’s 2019 testing described the game as appearing to run at approximately 1080p and 30 FPS, while Gamernews independently reported a stable 30 FPS in an Xbox One X test. Windows Central also reported no major Xbox One X resolution or frame-rate enhancement.
Series X hardware can make a backward-compatible game load faster and can apply platform-level features when Microsoft has enabled them for that title. Microsoft describes possible enhancements as including higher resolutions, faster frame rates, improved textures, more consistent frame pacing, FPS Boost, and Auto HDR. The wording is important: these are possible, title-specific features, not a promise that every backward-compatible game receives every enhancement.
Series S compatibility path
Microsoft states that Series S runs the Xbox One S version of backward-compatible games. That makes the Series S baseline different from the Xbox One X path used for comparison on Series X. A 1440p or 1080p console output setting on Series S does not change the game into a 1440p-rendered title, and the available evidence does not establish a separate Series S frame-rate mode.

Cloud play
The Xbox Store listing also advertises cloud play with eligible Game Pass plans. Cloud streaming adds network latency and depends on connection quality, so it should be treated as a separate way to access the game rather than evidence of a different local graphics mode.
Best Xbox Series X display settings
Set 4K output for a 4K display
On Series X connected to a 4K television, choose 4K UHD in the console’s display settings if the television supports it. This lets the console send a 4K signal and allows the display to use its normal scaling pipeline. It does not demonstrate that the backward-compatible game is internally rendered at 4K; the documented Xbox One X observation remains approximately 1080p at 30 FPS.

Use the display’s native mode when you do not have 4K
For a 1440p monitor, select 1440p if the console and monitor negotiate that mode correctly. For a 1080p television, select 1080p. Avoid choosing a higher output solely because it sounds more detailed: the console will upscale the game image, while the display’s scaling quality determines how that signal looks.
Choose 60 Hz for normal play
Set the console refresh rate to 60 Hz for ordinary television and monitor use. The available testing describes a 30 FPS presentation, so a 120 Hz output setting cannot be presented as a 120 FPS or 60 FPS mode for this title. A 120 Hz television may still accept a 120 Hz signal, but the game’s documented frame delivery remains approximately 30 frames per second.
Leave video overrides conservative
If you encounter an unusual compatibility problem, return to the console’s default video mode rather than forcing unsupported color depth, resolution, or refresh combinations. The game itself has no verified graphics-setting list that would justify a special override.
Best Xbox Series S display settings
Match the output to the panel
Use 1440p output when your Series S is connected to a 1440p display that reports that mode correctly. Use 1080p for a Full HD television or monitor. The output choice affects signal scaling; it does not establish the internal resolution of the Xbox One S version.
Do not chase 4K output
Series S is designed around a lower output target than Series X. Selecting a 4K television does not supply a verified 4K rendering mode for Ancestors, and the evidence does not show a Series S resolution upgrade for this game. A correctly matched 1440p or 1080p path generally avoids unnecessary scaling.

Keep refresh rate at 60 Hz
Use 60 Hz unless another application requires a different setting. The documented 30 FPS behavior gives no reason to expect a 60 FPS mode on Series S, and Microsoft’s statement that Series S runs the Xbox One S version is the relevant compatibility limitation.
Does Ancestors have a performance mode?
No verified Xbox menu or publisher specification establishes selectable Quality, Performance, Resolution, or Frame Rate modes for the currently available release. Do not expect an in-game toggle that trades image quality for 60 FPS.
That absence is different from saying the console cannot improve the experience at all. Backward compatibility may provide faster loading, improved filtering, more consistent frame delivery, FPS Boost, or Auto HDR when Microsoft has enabled those features for a particular title. None of those possibilities confirms a 60 FPS option for Ancestors.
What frame rate should you expect?
Series X
Plan around approximately 30 FPS. Windows Central’s Xbox One X observation estimated about 1080p and 30 FPS, and Gamernews reported a stable 30 FPS during its Xbox One X test. Those are independent observations of the Xbox One-era build, not a publisher-issued Series X specification.
Series S
Expect the Xbox One S compatibility baseline rather than a new high-frame-rate mode. There is no cited evidence of a Series S-specific 60 FPS patch, and Microsoft’s compatibility documentation does not guarantee that every game receives a higher frame rate.

Why a 120 Hz television does not change this
A television’s panel refresh capability and a game’s frame rate are separate. The console can output at 120 Hz while repeating frames from a 30 FPS game. That can be useful for other games, but it is not proof that Ancestors is running at 60 or 120 FPS.
Should you enable HDR?
HDR is optional, not a default recommendation. The cited reviews do not establish native HDR support for the original Xbox release, and Microsoft documents Auto HDR as a selective backward-compatibility feature. If your television applies Auto HDR and the result looks natural, you can keep it enabled; if the image appears washed out, too dark, or has clipped highlights, use SDR instead.
Check the result in a dark and bright scene
After changing HDR, inspect both shadow detail and bright sky or sunlight. A good setting preserves visible texture in dark foliage and rocks while keeping bright areas from becoming featureless white. If either end looks worse than SDR, disable HDR for this game rather than compensating with aggressive television controls.
Do not confuse console HDR calibration with game support
The Xbox HDR calibration tool adjusts the console-to-display pipeline. It cannot add a native HDR mode to a game that does not expose one, and it cannot confirm whether Auto HDR has been applied. Treat the picture you actually see as the deciding factor.
Step-by-step setup on Xbox Series X|S
- Open Settings on the Xbox dashboard.
- Go to General, then TV & display options.
- Under Display, choose the resolution that matches your panel: 4K UHD for a 4K display on Series X, 1440p for a compatible 1440p display, or 1080p for a Full HD display.
- Set Refresh rate to 60 Hz for this game.
- Open the console’s advanced video options only if you need to verify that the television accepts the selected signal. Do not infer a game frame-rate upgrade from a 120 Hz capability.
- Launch Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey and look for an actual graphics or display menu. If no quality, resolution, frame-rate, or HDR toggle is present, leave the console-level recommendations in place.
- Test HDR with a scene containing both deep shadows and bright daylight. Keep HDR only if the image remains convincing; otherwise turn it off for this title.
Series X versus Series S: practical differences
| Comparison point | Series X | Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility source | Use the Xbox One X path as the practical comparison baseline | Microsoft says it runs the Xbox One S version |
| Best display target | 4K UHD output for a 4K television; internal game rendering is not confirmed as 4K | 1440p or 1080p output according to the connected display |
| Expected image sharpness | Potentially cleaner scaling and filtering through the higher-tier compatibility path, but no guaranteed resolution upgrade is documented | Lower Xbox One S baseline; no documented Series S-specific resolution mode |
| Frame-rate consistency | Plan for approximately 30 FPS, based on Xbox One X observations | Plan for the Xbox One S compatibility behavior; no verified 60 FPS mode |
| HDR | Optional; native support for the original release is not established | Optional under the same limitation |
| Dedicated Series X|S build | A December 8, 2026 release was reported, but that date is after the current October 18, 2026 baseline and its technical features are not yet established here | |
Troubleshooting common picture and performance problems
The picture looks soft on a 4K television
That softness is consistent with an older game image being scaled to a higher output resolution. Confirm that the console is sending the display’s intended mode, then compare the television’s game-mode scaling options. Do not expect a 4K output label to create 4K internal rendering.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

The game feels less smooth than a modern 60 FPS title
A 30 FPS presentation will look less fluid than a 60 FPS game, even when frame pacing is stable. Check that the console is not being judged against a 120 Hz television demo or another title with FPS Boost. There is no verified performance toggle to activate in this release.
HDR makes the image gray or too dark
Disable HDR for the game and compare the same scene in SDR. Because native HDR support for the original Xbox version is not established and Auto HDR is selective, SDR is the safer choice when the television’s tone mapping looks wrong.
The Series S image does not look like Series X
This is expected from the different compatibility baselines. Series S runs the Xbox One S version, while Series X comparisons use the Xbox One X path. Changing Series S output to 4K on a 4K television cannot remove that underlying difference.

A 120 Hz setting did not improve performance
That is normal. The setting changes the console’s output timing, not the game’s frame-generation rate. The documented observations remain approximately 30 FPS.
What changes after December 8, 2026?
A report dated October 15, 2026 says a dedicated Series X|S upgrade or remaster is planned for December 8, 2026. Because that release is future relative to this article’s October 18, 2026 baseline, its resolution, frame rate, HDR implementation, and menu options cannot be treated as current facts.
When that build is installed, check its version number, patch notes, and in-game display menu. Re-test resolution and frame rate rather than assuming that the backward-compatible Xbox One recommendations still apply. Until the dedicated build is available and its specifications are published, the Xbox One compatibility behavior remains the reliable basis for settings advice.
Quick Recap
Settings checklist
- Use 4K UHD output on Series X with a 4K display; use 1440p or 1080p on Series S according to the panel.
- Set the console to 60 Hz for normal play.
- Expect approximately 30 FPS, not 60 or 120 FPS.
- Do not assume that console output resolution equals internal game rendering resolution.
- Enable HDR only when the resulting image looks correct; SDR is preferable to poor tone mapping.
- Do not search for an unverified performance-mode toggle.
- Re-check all settings after the reported December 8, 2026 dedicated release.
