What the Xbox Series X|S version actually offers
Microsoft lists a dedicated Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S product separately from the Xbox One version. The Series X|S listing advertises three relevant capabilities: 60 FPS gameplay, HDR10 and “Optimised for Xbox Series X|S.” Those are platform-level features of the listed edition, not promises that every movie, menu animation or scene will run at 60 frames per second.

Recommended settings at a glance
- Install the Series X|S edition. In the Xbox Store or your library, select the entry whose name explicitly says Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S.
- Install the latest available update. The game can start offline, but 2K recommends connecting so updates and patches can be downloaded.
- Use your Xbox HDR setting if your display supports HDR10. Turn HDR on at the console and television or monitor, then use the display’s normal game/HDR calibration controls. The game’s listing does not specify numerical brightness or paper-white values.
- Leave nonexistent game-level modes alone. There is no documented setting to switch between Quality and Performance, force a resolution, or select a target frame rate.
- Judge 60 FPS during play, not during every cinematic. A 30 FPS pre-rendered movie can appear between gameplay sections without indicating that the Series X|S installation is wrong.
How to verify that you installed the right edition
From the Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store on your Xbox.
- Search for Mafia III: Definitive Edition.
- Open the product details and read the platform line. Choose the entry that explicitly identifies Xbox Series X|S, not the separate Xbox One entry.
- Before downloading, check that the product description mentions Series X|S optimization, 60 FPS gameplay and HDR10.
- After installation, open the game’s Manage game and add-ons screen and confirm that the installed product corresponds to the Series X|S listing.
Store labels can change slightly with account region or interface updates, so the platform wording is more useful than relying on a tile image. If both entries appear in your library, compare the complete names rather than assuming the console automatically selected the newer version.

60 FPS expectations on Series X and Series S
The Microsoft listing describes the Series X|S edition as offering 60 FPS gameplay. That is the correct expectation for interactive play, but it should not be converted into a claim that every frame is locked at exactly 60 or that every video sequence uses the same cadence.
Why a cinematic may look different
A report on the upgrade distinguishes between two types of cinematics: many real-time cinematics run at 60 FPS, while some pre-rendered movies remain at 30 FPS. A short 30 FPS sequence therefore does not prove that your game has fallen into an Xbox One mode or that a performance option is disabled. Pre-rendered video is delivered as authored media; it is not rendered by the game engine in the same way as interactive scenes.
What you should and should not troubleshoot
- If gameplay feels smooth and a story movie looks more film-like, that behavior is consistent with the reported mix of 60 FPS real-time scenes and 30 FPS pre-rendered scenes.
- If the entire game appears to run at a lower cadence, first verify the installed edition and install pending updates.
- Do not search for a frame-rate slider that the available product information does not document.
- Do not infer a console-specific resolution or image-quality difference from the absence of published Series X and Series S figures.
HDR10: enabling it without inventing game settings
HDR10 is listed for the Series X|S edition. That confirms support for the HDR10 format; it does not establish that Mafia III contains its own HDR calibration screen or that a particular set of slider numbers is correct.

- Connect the Xbox Series X or Series S to an HDR-capable television or monitor using a compatible HDMI input.
- Open the Xbox display settings and confirm that the console recognizes HDR capability for the connected display. The exact labels can vary with Xbox system software.
- Enable HDR for games when the display supports it. If the display has an HDMI enhanced, deep-color or similar mode, enable the manufacturer’s equivalent so HDR10 signals are accepted.
- Run the Xbox HDR calibration routine if your display and console offer it. Follow the on-screen visibility instructions rather than copying values from another television.
- Use the television or monitor’s HDR picture mode and adjust brightness, local dimming or tone mapping according to that display’s own controls.
- Launch Mafia III and check the resulting image in a dark and a bright scene. If the picture is washed out or excessively dark, compare the display’s HDR mode and HDMI input settings before looking for an in-game slider.
Because no official listing reviewed here supplies Mafia III-specific calibration values, there is no evidence-based “best” numerical HDR recipe. Your panel’s peak brightness, black level and tone-mapping behavior determine the useful adjustment.

Is there a Quality or Performance mode?
Not according to the available product and support information. No reviewed official source identifies a user-selectable Quality/Performance toggle, graphics preset, resolution selector or target-frame-rate option for this edition.
That means the practical recommendation is to use the game as shipped: install the correct current-generation product, keep the console’s display settings appropriate for your television or monitor, and allow the game to apply its own Series X|S configuration. If you open the pause menu or Options screen and do not find a graphics page, that absence is consistent with the documented feature set; it is not evidence that a setting is hidden behind a code or a particular save file.

Series X versus Series S: what can be compared
The Store lists the edition for both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S and presents the same headline capabilities: 60 FPS gameplay and HDR10. The available information does not publish separate resolutions, graphics settings, image-quality measurements or console-specific frame-rate figures.
Consequently, you can safely compare feature availability, but not claim that both consoles render at the same resolution or produce identical image quality. Series X and Series S owners should use the same edition-verification and HDR steps. Any visible difference caused by a particular television, viewing distance or display mode should not be presented as a documented Mafia III console specification.

Updates, patches and offline play
2K states that you do not need an online service or an internet connection to play the game “straight out of the box.” Offline play is therefore possible after the game is installed. The same FAQ encourages connecting to download updates and patches, which is the better setup when your console can go online.
Recommended update sequence
- Connect the console to Xbox network services before the first launch when possible.
- Open the game’s Manage game and add-ons page and check for updates.
- Allow the download and installation to finish before judging performance or troubleshooting a mission.
- Restart the game after an update so all content and interface changes are loaded.
- If you must play offline, install the game first, then understand that you will not receive later fixes until the console reconnects.
An October 2026 patch-note report describes fixes involving stability, visual consistency, mission progression and interface behavior. Those details come from that report, not from a claim of independent testing. Keeping the game updated is therefore sensible, but an update does not create a documented graphics-mode menu.
Troubleshooting common “settings” problems
The game does not show 60 FPS
- Confirm that the installed product name identifies the Xbox Series X|S edition.
- Install pending game and console updates.
- Test during interactive gameplay rather than a pre-rendered cinematic, which may be authored at 30 FPS.
- Check that the television or monitor is using its normal game input mode and that no external device is adding motion processing or frame interpolation that changes how movement appears.
- If the issue persists across ordinary gameplay, restart the console and verify the display connection before assuming a hidden game option is disabled.
HDR is unavailable or looks wrong
- Verify that the display itself supports HDR10 and that the Xbox recognizes HDR capability.
- Use the display’s HDR-capable HDMI input and enable its enhanced signal mode if required by the manufacturer.
- Run the Xbox HDR calibration process again after changing the television’s picture mode.
- Compare the result with HDR disabled. A gray, faded image often points to an HDMI, input-mode or tone-mapping mismatch rather than a Mafia III slider.
- Do not enter arbitrary brightness numbers copied from another panel; the listing provides support information, not a universal calibration recipe.
You installed the Xbox One version by mistake
Return to the Store or library, search for the game again and select the entry whose title explicitly says Xbox Series X|S. The separate Xbox One listing is the key source of confusion. Remove or archive the unintended installation only after confirming that your save data is synchronized or backed up according to your normal Xbox practice.

A mission or interface behaves unexpectedly
Connect to Xbox network services and install available patches before treating the behavior as a display-setting problem. The October 2026 patch-note report lists fixes for mission progression and interface behavior. If you remain offline, those corrections cannot be downloaded.

Useful controls that are not display settings
2K’s FAQ includes two practical gameplay details that can be mistaken for configuration advice.
Steadying a scoped weapon
On Xbox, click the left control stick while using a scoped weapon to steady your aim. This is an input action, not a graphics option, and it does not depend on whether HDR is enabled.
Unlocking weapon and vehicle upgrades
Weapon and vehicle upgrades become available as lieutenant loyalty increases. If an upgrade is missing, progressing loyalty is the relevant game-system requirement; changing resolution, HDR or frame-rate settings will not unlock it.
A practical setup for different displays
HDR television
Use the Series X|S edition, enable HDR10 through the console and television, run the console calibration routine, and leave Mafia III’s undocumented graphics controls alone. Evaluate the image with the television’s game mode active so processing does not obscure the console’s output.

HDR monitor
Confirm that the monitor accepts HDR10 over the selected HDMI input and that its HDR mode is enabled. Because monitors vary widely in peak brightness and tone mapping, use the monitor’s own guidance and the Xbox calibration screen rather than a generic game-specific value.
SDR television or monitor
The Series X|S listing’s HDR10 support does not require you to buy an HDR display. On an SDR screen, use the console’s recognized SDR output and the display’s game mode. You will not see HDR benefits on a panel that cannot accept HDR10, but the edition’s advertised 60 FPS gameplay capability remains the relevant frame-rate expectation for interactive play.
What not to change
- Do not force a different resolution solely because the Store does not publish one.
- Do not assume a 30 FPS movie means the game reverted to Xbox One settings.
- Do not search for unofficial configuration files or console commands to unlock a mode that official information does not document.
- Do not treat HDR10 support as proof that a particular television picture preset is universally correct.
- Do not compare Series X and Series S image quality as if separate resolution figures had been published; they have not been established here.
Bottom line for Series X|S owners
Install Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S, update it when possible, and configure HDR10 at the Xbox and display level if your screen supports it.
