Xbox’s current listings show Seagate Storage Expansion Cards in 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB on its US product page. Xbox’s UK accessories catalog also lists WD_BLACK C50 cards in 512 GB and 1 TB, plus Seagate cards in 1 TB and 2 TB.
These Storage Expansion Cards are different from ordinary USB hard drives. Xbox says the cards use the dedicated expansion port and match the console’s internal SSD performance. No current evidence establishes that Seagate or WD_BLACK is universally faster or better value, so the practical choice is capacity, exact model, region, price and stock.

What an Xbox Storage Expansion Card does
Xbox Series X and Series S use a dedicated Storage Expansion Card format for additional high-performance game storage. The card connects through the expansion port on the rear of the console rather than through a standard USB socket. Xbox describes the design as replicating the internal SSD experience, so an officially listed card is intended to provide additional storage without giving up the performance target Xbox specifies for the internal drive.

- QUICK RESUME SUPPORT. The storage expansion card seamlessly integrates with your console's Quick Resume, enabling instant transition between multiple suspended games — so you can pick up exactly where you left off without delay.
That is an Xbox product-page statement, not an independent laboratory benchmark. It supports treating the card as the appropriate high-performance expansion option, but it does not prove that one manufacturer’s card is faster than another’s or that either is the cheapest option in every market.
Xbox’s Series X information describes the cards as plugging into the back of the console through the dedicated storage expansion port. The same page separately identifies support for USB 3.1 external hard drives. Those are two different storage paths and should not be treated as interchangeable products.
Official cards and capacities by market
Regional Xbox catalogs do not show exactly the same products. The capacities below are the values shown on the cited Xbox pages accessed October 13, 2026; they are not a promise that every size is sold in every country.

| Product | Xbox listing | Capacities shown | What the available evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S | Xbox US product page | 1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB | Xbox lists compatibility with Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S and says the card maintains the internal SSD’s peak speed and performance. |

| WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S | Xbox UK accessories catalog | 512 GB, 1 TB | Xbox includes the C50 in its storage-accessories catalog. The retrieved page does not provide a side-by-side performance test or price comparison with Seagate. |
The Seagate product page gives a November 2020 release date. That historical date does not establish present-day stock, pricing, firmware revisions or a warranty term in your country. Check the product name and capacity on the retailer or regional Xbox listing before ordering.
How much capacity should you buy?
Capacity is the clearest decision because the cards are sold in substantially different sizes. Choose according to the games you want installed at the same time, not simply the largest number printed on a listing.
Rank #2
- SEAMLESS COMPATIBILITY: Designed specifically for Xbox Series X|S, this storage expansion card integrates perfectly with your console.
- INSTANT LOAD TIMES: Experience fast game loading speeds, matching the internal SSD performance of your Xbox Series X|S.
- EXPANDED STORAGE: Increase your console's storage capacity to keep more games, add-ons, and media ready to play at any time.
- PLUG AND PLAY: Simply insert the card into the dedicated expansion slot on your Xbox Series X|S for immediate use with no setup required.
- PORTABLE CONVENIENCE: Compact card design lets you bring your game library with you, making it easy to play your titles on any Xbox Series X|S.
512 GB: the smallest listed option
Xbox’s UK catalog shows a 512 GB WD_BLACK C50. This is the entry point among the capacities identified in the supplied Xbox listings. It can make sense if you rotate games regularly, keep a smaller active library, or want to add space without paying for a larger card. It leaves less room for simultaneous installations than the 1 TB, 2 TB or 4 TB options, so review your current storage-management screen before deciding.
1 TB: the common baseline
Xbox lists 1 TB cards from both Seagate and WD_BLACK in the UK, and a 1 TB Seagate card on the US page. A 1 TB card is a straightforward choice when you want a substantial increase over the console’s built-in game space while keeping the purchase to the most widely listed capacity. Because it appears in both manufacturers’ listings, verify the exact model and regional price rather than assuming the brands are equivalent in value.
2 TB: for a larger active library
Seagate’s Xbox US and UK listings include a 2 TB card. This size is useful when deleting and redownloading games is a frequent inconvenience, or when several large titles need to remain installed together. The fact that 2 TB is listed does not make it automatically cheaper per terabyte; calculate the local price per terabyte from the current offer.
4 TB: the largest US-listed capacity
The Xbox US Seagate page lists a 4 TB variant. The retrieved UK accessories page lists Seagate only at 1 TB and 2 TB, so do not assume that a 4 TB card is officially shown or readily available in the UK or another market. Confirm regional compatibility, seller location, returns and warranty before paying a premium for an imported capacity.
A practical capacity check
- Open your console’s storage-management screen and note how much space your currently active games use.
- List the games you expect to keep installed during the next few months, including multiplayer titles that you do not want to redownload.
- Choose the smallest listed capacity that covers that list with room for updates and new purchases.
- Compare the current local price per terabyte for that capacity against the next size up. A larger card is better value only if the actual price makes it so.
Advertised capacity and usable free space are not the same measurement on any storage device, so use the free-space figure shown by the console after installation when planning future purchases.

- ROOM FOR MORE GAMES. Up to 2TB(1) of storage gives you space to grow your library by up to 50(4) more games.

Seagate versus WD_BLACK C50
The available Xbox evidence supports compatibility and capacity comparisons, not a performance ranking. Xbox states that the Seagate card matches the internal SSD’s peak speed and performance. The UK accessories page lists the WD_BLACK C50, but the retrieved material does not include an independent benchmark or an Xbox side-by-side test showing that it is faster or slower than Seagate.
| Decision factor | Seagate Storage Expansion Card | WD_BLACK C50 |
|---|---|---|
| Capacities shown in the supplied Xbox listings | 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB on the US page; 1 TB and 2 TB on the UK page | 512 GB and 1 TB on the UK page; another regional capacity listing was not stated |
| Series X|S compatibility evidence | Xbox US page explicitly lists compatibility with Series X and Series S | Xbox UK accessories catalog includes the C50 as an Xbox storage expansion accessory |
| Performance evidence | Xbox says it maintains the internal SSD’s peak speed and performance | No side-by-side performance result is provided in the retrieved Xbox catalog |
| Price or value evidence | Current price comparison not stated | Current price comparison not stated |
If both cards are available in your market, compare the exact capacity and current price rather than the badge on the enclosure. A 1 TB card from one brand is not automatically a better deal than a 1 TB card from the other, and a larger card is not automatically better value without a current price-per-terabyte calculation.
How to choose an officially compatible card
- Identify the console. Confirm that you own an Xbox Series X or Series S. The Seagate product page specifically names both consoles; do not use an Xbox One accessory listing as a substitute.
- Check the exact product name. Look for “Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S” or the specifically listed “WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S.” Generic external SSD wording is not enough.
- Check your regional Xbox catalog. Capacities differ between the US and UK pages. A size shown in one country may not be listed in another.
- Select the capacity. Use your active-library estimate, then compare the next size up in case its current price per terabyte is lower.
- Verify the seller’s model and capacity. Match the model designation, capacity and console compatibility in the listing. Be cautious when a marketplace title combines several capacities under one product page.
- Check current price and availability. Xbox cautions that retailer prices and availability can vary. A recommendation based on an old sale price can be wrong even when the product itself is genuine.
- Keep purchase documentation. Save the receipt and product details in case the card is defective or the seller ships a different capacity.
Installing the card on an Xbox Series X or Series S
The hardware connection is simple because the card uses a dedicated port. Xbox describes the installation as plugging the card into the back of the console through that port.
- Place the console so you can reach the rear panel without bending the card or obstructing the connector.
- Locate the dedicated Storage Expansion port, separate from the USB ports.
- Align the card with the port and insert it firmly and straight. Do not force an angled connector.
- Open the console’s storage-management screen and confirm that the added capacity is detected.
- Choose the card as the installation location when managing future game installs, or move titles according to the options shown by your current console software.
Menu labels can change with system updates, so use the storage screen presented by your console rather than relying on an old screenshot or a retailer’s instructions. If the card is not detected, remove it, inspect the connector for obstruction, reinsert it squarely and recheck the exact model. Persistent detection problems should be handled through Xbox or the card manufacturer’s current support process.
Expansion cards versus USB 3.1 external hard drives
Xbox identifies USB 3.1 external HDD support on its Series X information page, but the cited material does not specify which games can run directly from a USB hard drive, which games must be transferred, or the exact transfer workflow. Those rules can also depend on the game and current console software.
Rank #4
- EFFORTLESS XBOX INTEGRATION. Officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S consoles.
- ROOM FOR MORE GAMES. Up to 2TB(1) of storage gives you space to grow your library by up to 50(4) more games.
- NVME SPEED YOU CAN FEEL. Low-latency performance matches Xbox Velocity Architecture, so games play directly from the card.
- QUICK RESUME READY. Instantly switch between multiple suspended games without losing progress or waiting.
- XBOX GAME PASS ULTIMATE. Enjoy a 1-month trial with access to hundreds of games across console, PC, and cloud(2).
Do not buy a USB HDD expecting it to be a drop-in replacement for an Xbox Storage Expansion Card. The expansion card is the product Xbox describes as matching the internal SSD’s performance through the dedicated port. A USB drive is a separate supported storage route whose game-play and transfer behavior must be checked against the latest Xbox support instructions before you depend on it for a particular title.
- Choose an official expansion card when your priority is the internal-SSD performance target Xbox advertises.
- Consider USB storage only after confirming the current rules for the games you intend to store or play from it.
- Do not infer that a USB SSD, USB HDD and Storage Expansion Card have identical performance simply because all can connect to the console.
Prices, availability and regional differences
The supplied Xbox pages establish capacities and compatibility, not a complete live price survey. They do not show a universal best buy, recurring discount, independent reliability score or retailer stock position. Xbox also notes that prices and availability may vary by retailer.
For a current purchase decision, record these details from offers in your own market:
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact model | Different products can share a brand name; only the listed Xbox expansion-card model addresses the compatibility question. |
| Capacity | Prices can differ sharply between 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB versions. |
| Total delivered price | Shipping, taxes and import costs can change the value of a card listed in another region. |
| Return and warranty terms | These are seller- and market-specific and are not established by the Xbox capacity listings. |
| Availability date | A capacity shown in an Xbox catalog may still be out of stock at a particular retailer. |
Because no current market prices or independent tests are provided, the most defensible verdict is conditional: buy the officially listed capacity that is available locally at a price you consider reasonable for the amount of storage you need.

Buying a generic external SSD
A fast-looking USB SSD is not automatically an Xbox Storage Expansion Card. Check for the exact Series X|S expansion-card designation and the dedicated-card format before ordering.
Best Value
- 1TB Storage Capacity: Instantly adds 1TB of additional storage to your Xbox console, giving you room for more games.
- Seamless Compatibility: Designed specifically for Xbox consoles, this expansion card integrates directly for plug-and-play use.
- Full-Speed Performance: Games run directly from the card at the same speed as the internal SSD, with no performance loss.
- Easy Installation: Simply plug the expansion card into the dedicated port on your Xbox console for instant added storage.
- Portable and Compact: The slim, lightweight design allows you to take your game library with you wherever you go.
Assuming every region sells every capacity
The US page shows Seagate at 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB, while the UK page shows Seagate at 1 TB and 2 TB and WD_BLACK C50 at 512 GB and 1 TB. Treat those as market-specific listings, not a global catalog.
Calling one brand the fastest
Xbox’s retrieved statements support the Seagate internal-SSD performance claim, but they do not compare Seagate with WD_BLACK in an independent test. Avoid speed rankings that the available evidence cannot support.
Calling one option the best value without a price
Capacity alone cannot establish value. Compare current local prices for the same capacity, include delivery and taxes, and account for the return policy.
Confusing USB support with expansion-card support
Xbox lists both technologies, but the cited page does not define detailed USB game-play or transfer rules. Check current Xbox guidance for the specific game and drive type before relying on a USB HDD.
Ignoring the exact model number
Marketplace pages can combine several capacities or generations under one heading. Match the product name, capacity and Xbox compatibility statement before completing the purchase.
Which card should you buy?
Choose the Seagate 1 TB, 2 TB or 4 TB card when that capacity is officially listed and available in your market, with the 4 TB option specifically shown on the Xbox US page. In the UK listing, compare Seagate’s 1 TB or 2 TB cards with the WD_BLACK C50’s 512 GB or 1 TB options. Select based on the storage you need and the current delivered price, not on an unsupported claim that one brand is universally faster or cheaper.
Whichever card you select, verify that it is the Xbox Series X|S expansion-card model, connect it to the dedicated rear expansion port, and confirm it in the console’s storage screen. That keeps the expansion-card decision separate from the different question of how USB 3.1 external HDD storage behaves.
