The setting that makes the biggest difference is Call of Duty’s own file manager, not an Xbox download toggle. On Xbox, open Menu > Manage Files > Manage Files, remove campaign, multiplayer, co-op, language packs, or temporary content you do not use, and install Warzone separately if that is all you play. Then set Graphics > On-Demand High-Quality Streaming to Minimal if you want to reduce ongoing bandwidth and cache use. This will not make a normal title update smaller, but it prevents unnecessary modes from occupying your drive and reduces texture-streaming traffic.
A very large update prompt can also reflect file reorganization rather than the same amount of permanent new storage. Activision’s 2024 roadmap warned that the initial download for a major restructuring could be large while the final Call of Duty footprint would not increase by the full download figure. The practical order is therefore: audit installed content, choose your streaming mode, leave free space for reorganization, and add Xbox-compatible storage only if the trimmed installation still exceeds capacity.

Why Call of Duty updates can look larger than the game you expect
Call of Duty is delivered as a hub containing multiple installable experiences and shared files. Campaign, multiplayer, Warzone, co-op, language packs, and limited-time test content can appear as separate components. If you installed the hub during an earlier release, it may still contain content from modes you no longer launch.

Its 15 August 2024 roadmap also explains that older content generally remains installed unless the player removes it; it is not routinely purged just because a season ends. That is why an Xbox with plenty of free space can still show a surprisingly large Call of Duty footprint.

There is a second source of confusion: a download prompt is not always a one-for-one prediction of new storage consumed. During the 2024 reorganization, Activision said files were being moved and consolidated. The initial package could therefore be large even though the final installation would not permanently grow by the complete download amount. Treat the prompt as the space required to complete the operation, not automatically as the space that will remain afterward.
For context, Activision estimated the Black Ops 6 beta in 2024 at about 35 GB for Xbox Series X|S players who already had the existing Call of Duty installation and about 75 GB for players without it. Those were estimates for that beta, not universal current sizes for every Xbox installation.
Use Call of Duty’s Manage Files screen first
Removing a tile through the game’s own manager is the cleanest way to reclaim space because it removes the corresponding content pack rather than leaving an orphaned or shared component behind.
- Launch Call of Duty on your Xbox.
- Open the in-game Menu.
- Choose Manage Files, then choose Manage Files again when the file-management page opens.
- Review each content tile. Select a tile to see whether it is installed and to choose Install or Uninstall.
- Uninstall modes and packs you do not play, confirm the removal, and wait for the game to finish applying the change.
- Restart Call of Duty and return to the same screen to verify that the unwanted tile is no longer installed.
Do not use this screen only once after buying the game. Revisit it after a seasonal update, a beta, or a limited-time test. Temporary content can be available for a short period, while older permanent content can remain until you remove it yourself.
What to remove
| Content tile | Keep it when you… | Remove it when you… |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Play the single-player story or need its installed assets. | Only play online modes and do not intend to return to the story. |
| Multiplayer | Play the annual title’s competitive or cooperative online playlists. | Use only Warzone and have no need for the annual title’s playlists. |
| Warzone | Play Warzone. | Do not use the free-to-play battle-royale experience. |
| Co-op or other mode packs | Use the specific mode represented by the tile. | Never launch that mode. |
| Language packs | Need an additional spoken or text language. | Use only the languages already installed. |
| Temporary test or beta content | The event is still active and you are participating. | The test has ended or you are finished with it. |
Shared assets can mean that uninstalling one tile does not remove every byte associated with that mode. The objective is to remove complete packs you do not need, not to chase a specific promised percentage reduction.

Install Warzone separately from the annual title
Under Activision’s redesigned delivery model, Warzone is no longer required to be part of the default annual-title download. You can select Warzone as its own install or add it later. This is the most useful arrangement for a player who wants Warzone but does not play the current premium campaign or multiplayer package.
Warzone-only workflow
- Open Menu > Manage Files > Manage Files inside Call of Duty.
- Leave the Warzone tile installed.
- Uninstall annual-title campaign, multiplayer, co-op, and language packs that you do not use.
- Return to the content list after the operation completes and confirm that Warzone launches normally.
If you later buy or start playing the annual title, reinstall its required tiles from the same screen. A separate Warzone installation does not prevent you from adding other components later; it simply avoids paying the storage cost up front for modes you are not using.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose the texture-streaming setting that matches your connection
Call of Duty can stream higher-quality texture data instead of keeping every asset permanently installed. The relevant control is Menu > Manage Files > Graphics > On-Demand High-Quality Streaming.
| Setting | What it prioritizes | Bandwidth and image effect | Use it when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimal | Lower network use and a smaller streaming cache. | Uses less internet bandwidth, with reduced streamed-image quality. | Your connection has a data cap, unstable speeds, or you prefer predictable network use. |
| Optimized | Higher-fidelity streamed textures. | Default mode; uses more bandwidth to favor image quality. | You have ample data and a reliable connection and want the best available texture quality. |
This control affects on-demand streaming and cache behavior. It does not change the byte size of a normal title update. Switching to Minimal is therefore a bandwidth decision, not a way to turn a 200 GB update into a small patch.
Prepare for a large seasonal update
Large updates are easiest to complete when the console has room for both the downloaded package and temporary files used while content is reorganized. Activision’s roadmap described a scheduled file-reorganization update for 21 August 2024 and said that, after the larger initial updates, future downloads would decrease in size and existing files would occupy less space on the device.

Before you select Update
- Open Manage Files and remove modes, language packs, and temporary content you do not use.
- Check the Xbox storage screen and leave more free space than the final patch number appears to require, because the installation may need staging space.
- Close other games and apps so the console can apply the package without competing disk activity.
- If the console still cannot start the update, move another game to USB storage or an expansion card before deleting Call of Duty components you may later need.
After the update finishes
- Restart Call of Duty if the game reports missing content or displays an outdated menu.
- Open Menu > Manage Files and check which tiles are installed.
- Remove any event or test tile that is no longer relevant.
- Recheck free space in Xbox storage; the temporary download package may have been removed after the reorganization completed.
The size shown in the queue and the lasting size shown in storage can therefore differ. Neither number alone proves that the game has permanently added the entire headline download amount.
What to do when Xbox asks for a 200–400 GB update
Do not immediately assume that every mode will be added permanently. First identify whether the queue entry is a title update, a reorganization, or a fresh installation after the hub was removed.
- Cancel or pause only if you need to free space or verify the installation; do not repeatedly restart the same queue entry, which can create more temporary work.
- Open Manage Files and record which tiles are currently installed.
- Uninstall complete unused tiles, especially annual-title modes and extra language packs.
- Confirm that the Xbox has enough temporary free space to unpack the update.
- Resume the update and allow it to complete without launching another large download at the same time.
- After completion, compare the Xbox storage reading with the pre-update reading and review the installed tiles again.
If the update still cannot proceed, the immediate problem is capacity, not the texture-streaming choice. Move or delete another game, or add compatible storage, then retry.

Deleting unused Call of Duty packs is free and should come first. If your library repeatedly fills the internal drive, hardware expansion is the durable solution. Xbox Series X|S supports proprietary expansion-card storage designed for the console. An Xbox-compatible expansion card is the most direct option when you want additional capacity for games that remain playable from the added device.
A USB drive is useful for overflow, archiving, and moving games you play less often. Compatibility depends on the Xbox generation and the game version: some titles can be stored on USB but must be moved to an eligible internal or expansion-card location to play. Verify the drive’s Xbox compatibility and the requirements for the specific Call of Duty version before purchasing.

| Storage option | Play directly from the device | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox internal storage | Yes, for installed compatible titles. | Frequently played games and fastest access without moving files. | Fixed capacity; Call of Duty’s shared hub and seasonal files can consume it quickly. |
| Xbox Series X|S expansion card | Designed for direct play of compatible Series X|S titles. | Permanent capacity expansion for a large active library. | Proprietary hardware; confirm console generation, capacity, and current compatibility before buying. |
| Xbox-compatible USB drive | Varies by title and console generation; some games can be stored but not played directly. | Archiving, overflow, and moving less-used games. | Transfer time and playability depend on the specific title and Xbox hardware. |
Expansion storage solves a capacity shortage. It does not reduce the size of an individual Call of Duty update or lower the bandwidth required to download it.
A storage plan for different Call of Duty players
Warzone-only player
- Keep Warzone installed as the separate component.
- Remove campaign, annual-title multiplayer, co-op, and unneeded language packs.
- Set On-Demand High-Quality Streaming to Minimal if bandwidth is more important than maximum texture quality.
- Use an expansion card if Warzone and the rest of your library repeatedly exceed internal capacity.
Annual-title multiplayer player
- Keep the multiplayer tile and only the shared components it requires.
- Remove Warzone if you never launch it.
- Keep campaign or co-op only when you actually use those modes.
- Choose Optimized streaming when your connection supports the extra traffic and image quality matters more than data use.
Campaign-first or occasional player
- Install the campaign tile while removing competitive modes you do not play.
- After finishing the story, uninstall the campaign from Manage Files rather than leaving it dormant.
- Before a seasonal update, audit the list again because older content is not automatically removed in normal circumstances.
Troubleshooting common failures
The game says content is missing after an uninstall
Return to Menu > Manage Files > Manage Files and look for the missing mode’s tile. Reinstall only that component, then restart the game. Removing a mode you do not play should not require reinstalling every other tile.
The update reports insufficient space even after deleting a mode
Check the Xbox storage reading after the uninstall completes; space may not be available until the operation finishes. If there is still not enough room, move another game to USB storage or an expansion card. A large reorganization can require staging space in addition to the final installed files.
Minimal streaming did not reduce the update queue
That is expected. Minimal controls on-demand texture streaming and cache behavior. It does not alter the size of standard title updates, so use Manage Files and storage management for installation-size problems.
Recommended Free Tools
Warzone keeps appearing with an annual-title install
Open the in-game file manager and check each tile rather than accepting every default selection. Under the redesigned delivery model, Warzone can be selected separately; remove it if you do not play it, or keep only that tile if Warzone is your intended experience.
An old beta or event occupies space
Temporary content can be available only for a limited period, but it may remain installed until removed. If its tile is still listed after the event, uninstall it from Manage Files and confirm the reclaimed space in Xbox storage.
