The recommended five-attachment XM4 build

Why each XM4 attachment is there
Compensator
The Compensator is the build’s primary recoil-control choice. Official multiplayer guidance describes compensators as reducing recoil while affecting Accuracy. If you value concealment more than recoil correction, replace it with a Suppressor as described in the alternate setup below.
Long Barrel
The Long Barrel is intended to preserve the XM4’s effectiveness farther from the target by extending damage range. Call of Duty’s Gunsmith guidance notes that barrels may also change bullet velocity and headshot-multiplier behavior, so check the in-game stat display rather than assuming every barrel has the same trade-off.

Vertical Foregrip
The Vertical Foregrip supplies another layer of recoil control and aiming stability. It is especially useful when holding the trigger through longer bursts, but the exact on-screen penalties and benefits should be read from your current Gunsmith screen.
Quickdraw Grip
Quickdraw Grip is the handling counterweight to the range and recoil attachments. Rear grips can improve ADS and sprint-to-fire speed, helping the XM4 come up faster when moving between targets or entering a fight.
Light Stock
Light Stock completes the mobility side of the build. Official stat explanations place stock effects in areas such as flinch resistance and movement speed; this recommendation uses it to keep the rifle from feeling unnecessarily slow.

An eight-attachment alternative with Gunfighter
PC Gamer’s guide, updated January 25, 2025, lists a more heavily customized setup:

This is not automatically better than the five-slot build. It consumes the Gunfighter wildcard’s extra capacity and gives up the Compensator’s stated recoil emphasis for Suppressor concealment. PC Gamer specifically suggests using a Compensator instead when stealth is not important.
Five slots or eight?

At launch, standard primary weapons had five attachment points. Blizzard’s launch documentation said Gunfighter raises that limit to eight at Player Level 33. Progression and attachment rules can change, so confirm the requirement in the live game before planning a class around it.

How to tune the XM4 in Gunsmith
- Open the XM4 in your multiplayer Loadout and enter Gunsmith.
- Install the five recommended attachments, or activate Gunfighter before attempting the eight-attachment version.
- Read the numerical Firepower, Accuracy, Mobility and Handling changes shown for each part. The official categories cover damage, fire rate and bullet velocity; recoil and flinch resistance; movement speeds; and reload, ADS, sprint-to-fire and weapon-swap speed.
- Fire the rifle in a practice area or a low-stakes match and watch whether your misses come from vertical climb, horizontal sway, slow aiming or poor movement.
- Change one attachment at a time. Keep the Compensator when recoil is the limiting problem; test a Suppressor when concealment matters more; retain Quickdraw Grip if entering fights feels slow; and reconsider the stock or barrel only after identifying the specific handling or range issue.
Call of Duty’s own advice is to consider the playstyle you are shooting for and use Gunsmith to get there. The stat panel is more reliable for your current build than an old universal tier list.

Season 04 Reloaded patch notes recorded historical XM4-related attachment changes: Recoil Springs’ listed vertical and horizontal recoil improvements increased from 15% to 18%, Gain-Twist Barrel’s bullet-velocity improvement rose from 40% to 45%, and Ported Compensator’s vertical-recoil improvement rose from 25% to 30%. Those are patch-note values from that update, not a complete statement of the weapon’s live statistics on September 30, 2026.

The available guides were published in 2025 and do not provide a current, controlled head-to-head test of these two builds. No sourced time-to-kill or recoil measurement establishes a single best XM4 configuration for the live Black Ops 6 multiplayer balance. Treat the five-slot setup as the safest starting point, then let the Gunsmith display and your own range preference decide the final substitutions.

XM4 availability and class context
Official launch material listed the XM4 as immediately unlocked within the Assault Rifle class. That launch status may not describe every later progression or playlist change, so check your current weapon menu if the rifle is not available on your account.

You need Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 access to use this in-game loadout. No real-world firearm, component or gaming accessory is required for the XM4 setup.
