Mine at Y -59 for the highest practical diamond density in Minecraft’s current 1.18-and-later world generation. Dig 1×2 branch tunnels around Y -58 to -59, where the player’s feet are usually at Y -59 and the tunnel opening occupies the blocks above. Diamonds generate from Y -64 through Y 16 and become more common as you go lower, but bedrock and lava make the bottommost layers harder to work. If interruptions become excessive, move up to Y -54 through -58 for a safer, more convenient compromise.
Why Y -59 is the best practical diamond level
Minecraft’s modern ore distribution rewards depth. Mojang described the post-1.18 rule in Java Edition Snapshot 21w37a this way: “Diamond generates below y 16, with more diamond the lower you go.” The current distribution references covered by this guide place diamond generation between Y -64 and Y 16, with the greatest concentration at the lower end of that range.

Going all the way down to Y -60 through -64 can expose more diamond-generating blocks, but bedrock and lava interrupt tunnels more often. In normal branch mining, those interruptions can cost more time than the extra theoretical density saves.
The generation rule has another important consequence: diamonds have reduced air exposure. A diamond placement is less likely to generate when the block that would contain it is directly exposed to air. As a result, a large open cave wall is not a complete survey of the diamonds in that area. Systematic tunnels through solid deepslate can reveal veins that cave exploration leaves hidden.

What the Y coordinate means in practice
Guides sometimes call the target Y -58 and others call it Y -59. They are usually describing the same tunnel arrangement rather than different ore rules. Your position is tracked by the block containing your feet; a two-block-high tunnel made at that position has its floor and ceiling at adjacent levels. For a branch mine, set your feet at approximately Y -59 and dig forward through the deepslate. The opening is commonly described as a Y -58 tunnel because the blocks immediately above the player’s feet are the blocks being removed.
The one-block wording difference does not indicate a change between Java and Bedrock generation, nor does it identify a new diamond layer. It is a coordinate convention and a practical choice about where the tunnel is carved.

Diamond-mining levels compared
| Mining approach | Diamond density | Lava and bedrock interruption | Tunnel efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Y -59 branch mining | Highest practical target in the current distribution | Lower than the bottommost layers, but lava pockets still occur | Strong balance for repeatable 1×2 tunnels |
| Y -54 to -58 | Small reduction from the Y -59 optimum | Easier to work than Y -60 through -64 | Often better when interruptions at the optimum become frustrating |
| Y -60 to -64 | Denser generation than higher levels | Bedrock and lava interrupt tunnels more frequently | More blocked routes and rebuilding; practical gains depend on how often you must detour |
| Open-cave exploration | Can expose visible diamonds, but reduced air exposure means some placements are absent from cave surfaces | Movement can be quick, but lava may be exposed immediately | Fast to begin and useful for scouting; incomplete as a stand-alone method |
The table describes the trade-offs established by the current distribution references, not a guaranteed diamonds-per-hour result. No authoritative numeric hourly yield is available, and your result will vary with tunnel length, interruptions, tool speed and how much solid deepslate you inspect.
How to set up a Y -59 branch mine
1. Enable coordinates and find your depth
Turn on the coordinate display for your edition, then descend until the vertical coordinate is approximately -59. Use the block-position value associated with your feet rather than trying to match the height of the top of your character model. If you are at -58 or -59, the difference is the convention described above; consistency matters more than the label.
Do not dig straight down beneath yourself. Use a staircase or another controlled descent so you can see and react to cavities, lava and uneven terrain on the way to the target layer.

2. Bring equipment for a long, interrupted tunnel
- A water bucket for dealing with exposed lava and making a route safe.
- Enough food to recover from damage and sustain a long mining session.
- Spare pickaxes, because deepslate takes time to break and a failed tool can strand you underground.
- Building blocks for sealing a lava opening, bridging a gap or marking a route.
These are working supplies rather than a promise of safety. A water bucket can make a lava edge manageable, but it does not remove the need to stop mining when a pocket opens in front of you.
3. Carve a two-block-high main tunnel
At the target depth, dig a 1×2 passage that is two blocks high. This size lets you walk through the mine while exposing the side walls, ceiling and floor blocks where veins can appear. Keep the main passage straight long enough to establish a repeatable pattern, then add side branches at regular intervals.
Mine through solid deepslate instead of treating every nearby open cavity as the destination. Because direct air exposure suppresses some diamond placements, a tunnel that cuts into the surrounding rock examines blocks that a cave wall may not show.
4. Space branches so the intervening rock is visible
From the main tunnel, cut parallel 1×2 branches at regular spacing. Leave a consistent strip of rock between neighboring branches so that the walls of adjacent tunnels expose the intervening blocks without repeatedly mining the same column. The exact distance is less important than using one pattern throughout the mine and ensuring that every branch gives you a clear view into the surrounding deepslate.
When a branch opens into a large cavity, stop treating the empty space as proof that the area is exhausted. Scan the visible surfaces, mark the opening, and continue the branch through solid rock where it is safe to do so. The reduced-air-exposure rule is the reason a systematic pattern remains useful after a cave is found.

5. Examine every exposed face before moving on
Check both side walls, the ceiling and the floor of each completed segment. A vein may be partly hidden behind a block you can see only from the next position, so walk the tunnel rather than glancing from its entrance. If you expose a diamond block, remove enough surrounding deepslate to determine whether the vein continues around a corner or into the floor or ceiling.
Place temporary blocks or torches as route markers according to the supplies available in your world. A simple, consistent marker prevents you from looping through branches and helps you find the staircase back to the surface.
6. Handle lava pockets without abandoning the pattern
Lava is common at these depths. When a bright opening appears, stop before stepping into it. Use the water bucket from a safe position, seal the edge with building blocks if necessary, and wait until the route is stable before inspecting the cavity. Do not assume that a lava-filled opening is empty of diamond; check the surrounding solid deepslate once the immediate hazard is controlled.
If lava repeatedly breaks your route at Y -59, move the next branch one or two blocks higher rather than forcing a dangerous detour. A mine that remains walkable usually produces a better practical result than one that spends most of its time being rebuilt.
7. Decide when to return or shift levels
Return to the surface when your food, pickaxe durability, building blocks or safe route markers are running low. If the lower layer is consistently blocked by bedrock and lava, establish a second set of branches at Y -54 through -58. That range accepts a small density trade-off in exchange for fewer interruptions and more comfortable tunnel construction.

Why open caves alone can miss diamonds
Cave exploration is an efficient way to begin because it removes blocks for you and lets you inspect several surfaces at once. It is particularly useful for locating a deep area before laying out a branch mine. However, it should not be your only search method at diamond depth.
Modern diamond generation reduces air exposure. Blocks that would have been exposed directly to a cave may be less likely to contain diamonds, while blocks enclosed by deepslate remain part of the generation opportunity. A player who follows only visible cave walls can therefore miss veins that a tunnel would expose from behind the wall. Treat caves as access routes and scouting areas, then return to controlled mining through solid rock.
Choosing between Y -59 and the safer compromise
Use Y -59 when density is your priority
Choose Y -59 when you can maintain a safe, regular branch pattern and are comfortable managing lava openings. It is the level identified as the best practical diamond target by current distribution charts and guides, and it keeps the tunnel close to the deepest useful part of the generation range without committing every branch to the bedrock-heavy bottom.
Move to Y -54 through -58 when continuity matters more
Shift upward when the lower layers produce too many blocked branches, awkward bedrock shapes or repeated lava emergencies. The reduction in diamond density is described as small relative to the improvement in convenience. This choice is especially sensible for a long-distance mine where a straight, maintainable tunnel is more valuable than squeezing out the last increment of depth.
Use Y -60 through -64 only for a deliberate high-density trade-off
The bottom layers are closer to the point where diamond generation is most concentrated, but bedrock occupies more of the available tunnel space and lava can interrupt routes. If you choose these levels, expect to spend more time changing direction, sealing openings and rebuilding your branch pattern. They are not automatically faster simply because they are lower.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mining at a much higher level
Diamonds can generate as high as Y 16, but their frequency increases downward. A mine at a higher elevation may still find occasional ore, yet it gives up the density advantage of the deep layers. Check the coordinate display before committing to a long tunnel.
Confusing the feet coordinate with the tunnel label
If one guide says -58 and another says -59, verify whether each is naming the player’s feet position or the tunnel’s upper block. Keep your feet around Y -59 for the practical target and do not relocate solely because the written label differs by one.
Digging a single, random corridor
One corridor exposes only a narrow slice of the surrounding rock. Add regularly spaced branches and inspect their walls, ceilings and floors so the mine samples a wider volume without unnecessary duplicate digging.
Stopping at the first cave
A cave can reveal visible ore quickly, but reduced air exposure means its walls do not represent every diamond placement. Survey the cavity, then continue through solid deepslate where the route is safe.
Ignoring the cost of interruptions
The theoretical density of Y -60 through -64 does not account for the time spent around bedrock and lava. If those hazards force repeated detours, move up to Y -54 through -58 and preserve a consistent pattern.

The evidence for this recommendation applies to post-1.18 world generation, including Minecraft 1.21 references and current 26.x ore-distribution charts. The generation range and lower-is-denser rule are the relevant constants behind the Y -59 target.
There is no verified platform-by-platform matrix here that establishes a separate latest release number for Java, Bedrock and every console edition. Do not interpret the recommendation as a claim that every platform has an independently verified current version label. Instead, check the coordinate display and the world-generation version you are actually playing; if it uses the post-1.18 distribution, the Y -59 strategy is the applicable starting point.
A practical decision rule
- Start at Y -59 with a 1×2 branch pattern through solid deepslate.
- Keep a water bucket, food, spare pickaxes and building blocks ready for the lava and bedrock conditions at depth.
- Continue the pattern through safe rock rather than relying only on open cave surfaces.
- If interruptions repeatedly break your routes, raise the mine to Y -54 through -58.
- Use Y -60 through -64 only when you accept more obstruction in exchange for access to the densest part of the range.
This approach targets the generation optimum while allowing the mine to adapt to the actual terrain in front of you. It also avoids claiming a fixed hourly yield: the available evidence establishes relative density and practical trade-offs, not a universal diamonds-per-hour figure.
