For broad, self-directed exploration, start with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. If you want to explore Hyrule across land, sky, caves and depths, Tears of the Kingdom is the natural next choice. For a different kind of journey, The Wind Waker centers on sea travel, while Skyward Sword HD makes exploration more structured around puzzle-filled dungeons, sky islands and surface regions. The right pick depends on whether you want to roam, experiment with traversal, sail, or solve designed challenges.
Which Zelda game has the most exploration?
There is no objective winner established by Nintendo’s official descriptions, and they do not provide a measured comparison of world size or discovery count. For players who want to choose their own route through a broad landscape, Breath of the Wild is the clearest fit: Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild Explorer’s Guide calls Hyrule “vast and wild” and notes that climbing is only one of many ways Link can explore. Tears of the Kingdom is the stronger match if exploration means moving between different layers of a familiar world and using abilities to alter how you travel. Nintendo describes Hyrule’s land and skies, while its developer interview discusses sky and cave regions and diving as a way to survey the surface. Choose by the kind of journey you want
Choose Breath of the Wild for open-ended roaming
If your priority is deciding where to go and how to approach the landscape, Breath of the Wild is the most direct recommendation. Nintendo’s guide frames climbing as one option among many, rather than the only route to discovery. It supports a broad exploration pitch without requiring a claim about map size or playtime.
Choose Tears of the Kingdom for layered exploration and traversal experiments
Tears of the Kingdom returns to Hyrule with travel through land and skies and additional regions including caves and depths. Nintendo describes abilities that change movement and interaction: Ultrahand moves and attaches objects, Ascend provides a shortcut through overhead surfaces, and Recall reverses an object’s movement. The result is a fit for players who enjoy experimenting with routes and tools, not just following a path.

Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi describes diving as more than a seamless way to travel: it can help Link gather information about the surface by surveying it from above. That perspective makes vertical movement part of discovery as well as transportation. Nintendo’s interview with Fujibayashi.

Choose The Wind Waker for a sea-voyage premise
Nintendo’s series-history page describes The Wind Waker as a story in which Link travels the seas to rescue his sister. That supports recommending it to players attracted to ocean travel and island discovery; the available description does not establish a more detailed comparison with the other games here. Choose Skyward Sword HD for dungeon-led discovery
Skyward Sword HD connects floating islands with surface regions and emphasizes puzzle-filled dungeons. Nintendo describes each dungeon as its own adventure, making this the clearest option for players who want exploration organized around designed spaces and challenges rather than primarily open roaming. The Switch version supports motion controls and button-only controls. Nintendo’s Skyward Sword HD overview and gameplay details.
