If you mean The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom—Nintendo’s official title, released for Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024—the best next game depends on what you want to preserve. Choose The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for another compact, top-down adventure built around exploration, dungeons, and puzzles. Choose The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom if the Tri Rod’s creative problem-solving made you want a much larger world where building and experimentation drive nearly everything.

“Echoes of Hyrule” is not an official Zelda game title. This guide uses your wording where helpful, but refers to the game by its correct name, Echoes of Wisdom.

The two strongest follow-up choices

Game Format Best for What carries over from Echoes of Wisdom Main change
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Nintendo Switch) Compact top-down adventure Exploration, traditional dungeons, and puzzle solving A focused world, dungeon progression, and a top-down presentation Its creativity is concentrated in exploration, items, and the customizable Chamber Dungeon system rather than free-form object creation
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Large 3D adventure across Hyrule’s land and sky Open exploration, construction, and item experimentation Improvising with objects and solving problems in more than one way The scale, camera perspective, and structure are dramatically broader than Echoes of Wisdom

These are not an objective ranking of every Zelda release. They are the two documented matches for the two sides of Echoes of Wisdom: its compact dungeon-and-puzzle structure and its open-ended use of created objects. If you want the least disruptive follow-up, start with Link’s Awakening. If you want to enlarge the experimentation, move to Tears of the Kingdom.

Why Echoes of Wisdom is unusual

Nintendo’s central idea is the Tri Rod. Zelda records echoes—imitations of objects and creatures found in the world—and then calls on those copies to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. That system changes the usual Zelda question from “Which item opens this door?” to “Which thing I have seen could solve this situation?”

#1 Best Overall
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - World Edition
  • Discover Hyrule as never before: by making your own path, choices, and consequences
  • Ingenuity is the key to survival: find multiple solutions to tons of dynamic puzzles
  • Surprises hide around every corner: scavenge weapons, armor, plants, animals, and more
  • Live off the land: find weapons and armor, cook food, and brew elixirs
  • Utilize special technology: the in-game Sheikah Slate controls, objects and enemies in fun ways

The game still has recognizable Zelda structure. Nintendo identifies dungeons, quests, minigames, and a temporary swordfighter ability alongside the echo system. That combination matters when choosing a follow-up: someone who loved arranging echoes to bypass a problem may be looking for a creative sandbox, while someone who loved moving from room to room through a dungeon may primarily want another tightly authored adventure.

“Use echoes like water blocks to reach new heights, make bridges out of old beds, throw rocks at foes—or find your own creative combination of echoes to do things your way.”

— Nintendo, Echoes of Wisdom product description

The Associated Press described Echoes of Wisdom as combining “the top-down action of 1987’s original-recipe Zelda with the improvisation of last year’s ‘Tears of the Kingdom,’” and called its puzzles clever. That description explains why the two recommendations sit on opposite sides of the same comparison: Link’s Awakening follows the top-down, puzzle-and-dungeon lineage, while Tears of the Kingdom follows the improvisational lineage.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening: the closest structural follow-up

Why it is the safest recommendation

Nintendo presents the Switch version of Link’s Awakening as an exploration of Koholint Island with trap-filled dungeons and customizable Chamber Dungeons. Those are the same broad activities that make Echoes of Wisdom easy to return to: explore a contained setting, read the environment, enter a dungeon, and solve problems with the tools available to you.

This is the pick for players who enjoyed the rhythm of discovery more than the prospect of an enormous map. Its top-down format keeps rooms, routes, hazards, and puzzle relationships visually legible. You can concentrate on noticing a suspicious object, testing a route, or understanding a dungeon room instead of learning a larger three-dimensional system.

What carries over

  • A top-down viewpoint: The perspective keeps the focus on room layout, enemy placement, and environmental clues.
  • Exploration with a clear sense of place: Koholint Island is the setting Nintendo specifically identifies for the Switch edition, giving the adventure a defined geography rather than an unbounded landscape.
  • Dungeons as major milestones: Nintendo describes the dungeons as trap-filled, so players who treated each Echoes of Wisdom dungeon as a concentrated puzzle challenge have a direct point of comparison.
  • Puzzle-led progress: The game rewards observation and experimentation inside designed spaces instead of requiring a single combat-focused route.

What does not carry over

Link’s Awakening is not a second Tri Rod sandbox. You should not expect to copy an object or creature and deploy it whenever a problem appears. Its interest comes from how the island, dungeon rooms, and available adventure tools are arranged by the designers. That makes it more authored and less improvisational than Echoes of Wisdom.

The difference is useful rather than a drawback. When an Echoes of Wisdom puzzle invites you to invent a solution from your catalog of echoes, Link’s Awakening asks you to interpret a room and recognize the relationship between its obstacles. If you want every puzzle to be a free-form construction exercise, this may feel narrower. If you want cleanly framed challenges, that narrower focus is the attraction.

Rank #2
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom
  • The Legend of Zelda - Tears of the Kingdom

The Chamber Dungeon factor

The Switch edition includes customizable Chamber Dungeons. Nintendo’s description makes this the game’s explicit construction feature: you arrange dungeon chambers rather than building a free-roaming world. It is therefore a good bridge for players who liked making choices in Echoes of Wisdom but do not need unlimited object combinations.

Think of Chamber Dungeons as a change in authorship. The main adventure gives you rooms to read; the Chamber Dungeon system lets you assemble rooms into a challenge of your own. It preserves the satisfaction of understanding Zelda dungeon logic while adding a controlled creative layer.

Who should choose it first

  • Choose it if your favorite Echoes of Wisdom moments were dungeon entrances, trap rooms, environmental clues, and puzzle solutions.
  • Choose it if you want a compact adventure rather than a major shift to a large 3D world.
  • Choose it if a customizable dungeon format sounds more appealing than constructing vehicles or machines.
  • Choose it if you want the closest documented match in presentation and activity: top-down exploration, dungeons, and puzzles.

For most readers asking what to play immediately after Echoes of Wisdom, this is the default answer because it changes fewer variables at once.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: the experimentation upgrade

Why it is the right contrast

Nintendo describes Tears of the Kingdom as an open-ended adventure across Hyrule’s land and sky. Its signature systems are Ultrahand, which enables construction, and Fuse, which combines items. Those tools address the same desire that the Tri Rod can create: solving a problem by trying an object combination the game did not dictate as a single answer.

The important qualification is scale. Tears of the Kingdom is not a larger version of Echoes of Wisdom in a simple sense. It is a large 3D adventure with a different camera, different distances, and a broader exploration model. The move from a compact top-down map to land-and-sky traversal changes how you plan routes, read spaces, and judge the consequences of an experiment.

What carries over

  • Object-based problem solving: Ultrahand construction and Fuse combinations let you test relationships between objects and items rather than relying on one prescribed tool.
  • Multiple solutions: The open-ended design supports trying a different construction or combination when your first idea fails.
  • Exploration as experimentation: Hyrule’s land and sky provide a broad field for asking what can be built, combined, or reached.

What changes most

The camera and scale affect every decision. In Echoes of Wisdom, an echo can solve a room-sized problem while you remain close to the action. In Tears of the Kingdom, a construction may change how you move through a much larger environment. You will spend more time deciding where to go, how to cross distance, and whether an idea is worth building before you commit to it.

That breadth can be energizing if you want your next Zelda game to keep surprising you. It can also be the wrong follow-up if what you really want is another concise sequence of dungeons. The recommendation is therefore about appetite, not a claim that one game replaces the other.

Rank #3
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - Nintendo Switch
  • As Link, explore a reimagined Koholint Island and collect instruments to awaken the Wind Fish to find a way home
  • Explore numerous dungeons, riddled with tricks, traps, and enemies, including some from the Super Mario series
  • Meet and interact with unique locals to get help on your adventure
  • Listen to a reawakened soundtrack that helps bring life to Koholint Island
  • Earn Chambers (Dungeon Rooms) and arrange them to complete objectives in the all new Chamber Dungeon

Who should choose it first

  • Choose it if the most memorable part of Echoes of Wisdom was inventing an unexpected solution from ordinary objects.
  • Choose it if you want exploration to extend across both Hyrule’s land and sky.
  • Choose it if you are comfortable trading a compact top-down format for a large 3D adventure.
  • Choose it if you want construction and item combinations to be central activities, not an occasional puzzle technique.

Approach it as a change of scale, not as a direct sequel to Echoes of Wisdom. The connection is the design attitude—try something, combine things, and adapt—not the shape of the world or the pacing of the adventure.

Choose by the part of Echoes of Wisdom you want more of

If dungeons were the highlight

Start with Link’s Awakening. Nintendo’s Switch description explicitly emphasizes trap-filled dungeons, and the game keeps the challenge concentrated in designed rooms. You will get a clearer continuation of the dungeon-and-puzzle side without first learning a large construction vocabulary.

If making unusual solutions was the highlight

Start with Tears of the Kingdom. Ultrahand and Fuse make experimentation the organizing principle of a broad 3D adventure. The result is less compact, but it gives your curiosity more physical space to operate.

If you want another top-down game

Pick Link’s Awakening. It is the recommendation that most directly follows the top-down side identified by the Associated Press. The visual relationship is not the only reason: the emphasis on exploration, dungeons, and puzzles points in the same direction.

If you want the biggest possible change

Pick Tears of the Kingdom. Its land-and-sky structure and construction systems deliberately move away from the compact format. You are choosing it for contrast as much as continuity.

If you want creativity without a huge world

Pick Link’s Awakening and focus on its customizable Chamber Dungeons. This gives you a defined creative system inside a contained Zelda adventure, rather than asking you to manage a much larger 3D environment.

If you want creativity to define the whole adventure

Pick Tears of the Kingdom. Its Ultrahand construction and Fuse combinations are not a single optional activity; they are the reason the game is the better match for players who want to keep improvising.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - For Nintendo Switch 2
  • Enhanced performance and visuals exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Explore the skies, caves, and vast lands of Hyrule in a massive open-world adventure.
  • Wield new and returning abilities to craft solutions, vehicles, and weapons.
  • Discover the mystery behind the spreading gloom threatening the kingdom.
  • Use the ZELDA NOTES app to share, compare, and earn daily bonuses.

A practical decision path

  1. Identify your favorite activity. Write down whether you preferred dungeon rooms and puzzles or creating an unconventional solution from an echo.
  2. Choose your preferred viewpoint. If you want another top-down adventure, select Link’s Awakening. If you want a large 3D world, select Tears of the Kingdom.
  3. Decide how much structure you want. A focused island-and-dungeon journey points to Link’s Awakening; open-ended travel through land and sky points to Tears of the Kingdom.
  4. Decide where you want creativity to happen. Chamber Dungeons offer contained arrangement. Ultrahand and Fuse offer construction and combinations throughout a broad adventure.
  5. Buy or start only the match you actually want. Do not choose Tears of the Kingdom solely because it also supports experimentation, or Link’s Awakening solely because it is top-down. The activity and scale should fit your current mood.

Playing both: a sensible order

If you intend to play both, begin with the one that matches your immediate reason for leaving Echoes of Wisdom. There is no required continuity between these recommendations in the information Nintendo provides for the features discussed here, so the order is about pacing rather than story preparation.

Starting with Link’s Awakening keeps the next step compact. You can stay with top-down navigation, dungeon traps, and puzzle reading before making a deliberate jump to a large 3D world. This order suits players who want a gentle change.

Starting with Tears of the Kingdom works when your priority is experimentation. It lets you move immediately from echoes to construction and item combinations, while accepting that the map, camera, and travel demands are substantially different. You can then return to Link’s Awakening for a more concentrated dungeon experience.

Neither sequence makes the second game redundant. The two recommendations answer different needs: one emphasizes authored rooms and a contained setting; the other emphasizes broad exploration and systems that invite improvisation.

Optional Echoes of Wisdom extras

Nintendo lists optional Zelda-themed amiibo rewards for Echoes of Wisdom, including smoothie ingredients and alternate-color outfits. Amiibo are not presented as required to complete the game or to understand its core echo, dungeon, quest, and minigame systems. Treat them as collectibles or customization extras, not as a prerequisite for either follow-up recommendation.

If you are deciding what to purchase next, the physical Nintendo Switch editions of Link’s Awakening and Tears of the Kingdom are the relevant game formats described by Nintendo. Check the current retailer listing, stock, and price before buying, since those details change over time.

Final recommendation

Play Link’s Awakening after Echoes of Wisdom if you want the closest documented continuation of top-down exploration, dungeons, and puzzles, with customizable Chamber Dungeons as a measured creative extra. Play Tears of the Kingdom if you want the Tri Rod’s improvisational spirit expanded into construction, item combinations, and open exploration across Hyrule’s land and sky—and you are ready for a much larger 3D adventure.
