If you want another game after Planet Zoo 2, start with the original Planet Zoo for the closest modern-wildlife experience. Choose Prehistoric Kingdom for extinct animals and supply logistics, Let’s Build a Zoo for a different, management-first presentation, or Jurassic World Evolution 3 for dinosaur breeding and tighter operational decisions.

The right follow-up depends on which part of the sequel you enjoyed. Planet Zoo 2 offers more than 130 animals, including flying birds and fully aquatic species, along with guest needs, detailed construction, conservation projects and customizable Wildlife Reserves. A PC Gamer review dated October 13, 2026, scored it 60/100, praising the new fish, birds and reserves while criticizing mundane career objectives and fiddly creation tools. The alternatives below let you keep the systems you like and avoid the ones that frustrate you.

At a glance: which game fits your reason for leaving Planet Zoo 2?

Game Animal theme Building and exhibits Management focus Modes or status
Planet Zoo Modern wildlife Habitat construction, terrain shaping and extensive creative building Guest, animal and habitat management using the familiar zoo loop Established full release; closest documented match
Prehistoric Kingdom Extinct species Terrain tools, piece-by-piece construction and Steam Workshop sharing Guest, staff and animal needs; logistics and resource delivery by trainable staff Challenge and Sandbox; Early Access, with Update 19 targeted for full release in 2027
Let’s Build a Zoo Zoo animals and breeding The official description presents a zoo-management simulator; it does not establish a like-for-like measure of building depth Management and animal breeding are the central premise Available through the official site’s Steam and Xbox listings
Jurassic World Evolution 3 Dinosaurs Custom buildings and scenery for dinosaur exhibits Scientists, fossil expeditions, DNA extraction, trait selection, incubation and dinosaur-needs balancing Campaign, Challenge and Sandbox; 70 dinosaur species in TechRadar’s 2025 review

That table explains the broad choice: stay with modern wildlife in Planet Zoo, move into extinct animals and infrastructure in Prehistoric Kingdom, adopt a different management format in Let’s Build a Zoo, or switch completely to dinosaur operations in Jurassic World Evolution 3.

What Planet Zoo 2 changes—and why that matters when choosing an alternative

The sequel’s baseline is unusually broad. Its community description lists more than 130 animals, flying birds, fully aquatic species, guest needs, blueprint and piece-by-piece construction, conservation projects and customizable Wildlife Reserves. That means a replacement can feel “like Planet Zoo 2” in several different ways: it can match the living-animal focus, the construction tools, the management workload, or the sense of building a large reserve.

Jurassic World Evolution 3 - PlayStation 5
  • Nurture Generations of Dinosaurs - With over 80 awe-inspiring pre-historic species, 75 of which allow you to manage, breed and nurture families of dinosaurs across entire generations. Rear them from playful juveniles into awe-inspiring adults, each with distinct female, male, and juvenile variants.
  • Creativity Evolved - Create jaw-dropping parks with new creative tools never before seen in the Jurassic World Evolution series! From groundbreaking terrain editing to modular scenery customisation – build and tweak every aspect of your park from the ground up.
  • Epic Globetrotting Campaign - Join familiar faces from the Jurassic franchise, including Dr. Ian Malcolm (voiced by Jeff Goldblum) and embark on a non-linear campaign across a sprawling world map filled with iconic locations such as the Montana Badlands, and new locations such as Japan—each offering thrilling new challenges. Every decision will test your park management skills as you balance competing human interests with the delicate integration of dinosaurs into a modern world.
  • Control the Chaos - Set your site up to run as efficiently as possible with powerful and accessible park management tools provide control over your park’s operations

Those elements do not all land equally for every player. PC Gamer’s October 13, 2026 review called the animals the stars but described the micromanagement as fiddly and frustrating, giving the game 60/100. If your issue is the sequel’s busy objectives and interface friction, another title with the same feature list may not solve the problem. If you simply want more habitat design, the original Planet Zoo is the safest transition. If you want a new subject or a more operational loop, the other three games make a cleaner break.

Planet Zoo: the closest modern-wildlife substitute

Why it is the best first stop

Planet Zoo preserves the core identity that most players associate with the series: living-animal simulation, habitat construction, terrain shaping and extensive creative building. You are still designing spaces for modern wildlife rather than managing a fundamentally different kind of park. Layout work, scenery and habitat presentation remain the main creative rewards.

That continuity matters if your favorite part of Planet Zoo 2 was making a believable reserve rather than completing objectives. The original is also the most defensible recommendation for players who want the same broad wildlife-zoo loop but do not need every sequel feature, such as the expanded animal roster, flying birds, aquatic species or Wildlife Reserves described for the sequel.

What you give up

This is not a second version of the sequel. It is the earlier game, so you should expect a smaller scope than the sequel’s documented “more than 130 animals” baseline and none of the sequel-specific additions presented in that description. The trade-off is familiarity: you exchange some newer content for a known construction-and-habitat formula.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want modern wildlife rather than dinosaurs or extinct species.
  • Builders who care most about terrain, habitats and decorative freedom.
  • Anyone who found the sequel’s career objectives distracting and would rather concentrate on the core zoo loop.

Prehistoric Kingdom: extinct animals plus a real logistics layer

The central idea

Prehistoric Kingdom turns the zoo premise toward extinct species. The developer describes a park-management game in which you discover, incubate and release extinct animals while meeting the demands of guests, staff and animals. That change of subject is substantial: your exhibits are about prehistoric life, and the fantasy is rebuilding a park around species that no longer exist.

Construction and infrastructure

The game combines terrain editing with piece-by-piece construction, so it can appeal to players who enjoy hands-on building. Steam Workshop sharing adds a community angle for exchanging creations. Its distinctive system is logistics: resources must be delivered, and trainable staff handle that work. This makes the park feel like an operating facility rather than a collection of finished habitats.

Logistics can be a benefit or a burden. It gives staff movement and resource flow a direct purpose, but it also adds another layer to plan around. A player leaving Planet Zoo 2 because of excessive micromanagement should try the game with that distinction in mind: the systems are different, not necessarily lighter.

Jurassic World Evolution 3 Standard - PC Steam [Online Game Code]
  • Build your own Jurassic World like never before. Nurture generations of awe-inspiring dinosaurs with the series debut of juveniles, create and manage sprawling prehistoric parks around the globe, and let your imagination roar with powerful new creative options.
  • The next entry in the award-winning series, Jurassic World Evolution 3 puts you in control of building and running your very own Jurassic World.

Modes and development status

Prehistoric Kingdom includes Challenge and Sandbox modes. The developer’s Steam status identifies it as Early Access. In a 2026 update, the team said it was working on Update 18 and aiming to fully release the game with Update 19, currently scheduled for 2027. That target is a plan, not a guarantee, so content, balance and feature completeness can change before release.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want extinct animals instead of modern wildlife.
  • Builders who like terrain tools and modular construction.
  • Managers who enjoy staff routing, resource delivery and operational logistics.
  • Sandbox players comfortable with an Early Access game whose roadmap points to a 2027 full release.

Let’s Build a Zoo: a different management-first presentation

What is established

Let’s Build a Zoo is presented on its official site as a zoo-management simulator and is associated with Steam and Xbox. Animal breeding is part of its premise, so the appeal is running and expanding a zoo rather than reproducing the exact construction toolkit of the Planet Zoo series.

What cannot be assumed

The available official description does not establish a reliable ranking for its building depth, difficulty or overall system complexity against Planet Zoo 2. It is therefore misleading to label it automatically as the “simpler” option. Its presentation and priorities are different, but a different format is not the same thing as fewer decisions.

Who should choose it

  • Players interested in breeding and day-to-day zoo management as the main activity.
  • Anyone who wants a change of presentation while staying in the zoo-management genre.
  • Players who can evaluate the game on its own terms instead of expecting a one-to-one building replacement.

Jurassic World Evolution 3: dinosaur management with a stronger operations loop

How the park loop works

Jurassic World Evolution 3 replaces living wildlife with dinosaurs and places more weight on operational management. TechRadar’s 2025 review describes 70 dinosaur species and a progression loop built around hiring scientists, mounting fossil expeditions, extracting DNA, selecting traits, incubating animals and releasing them into exhibits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Each step creates a decision chain. Scientists affect how quickly and effectively research proceeds. Expeditions produce fossil material, DNA extraction turns that material into usable genetic information, trait selection shapes the resulting animal, and incubation determines when a dinosaur can enter an exhibit. Once released, dinosaurs still have needs that must be balanced with visitor and park requirements.

Building and game modes

The game supports custom buildings and scenery, allowing you to shape a dinosaur park rather than placing only fixed attractions. Challenge, Sandbox and Campaign modes provide different levels of structure. Campaign gives directed objectives, Challenge emphasizes ongoing park performance, and Sandbox removes much of the pressure so you can concentrate on layouts and exhibits.

The busywork trade-off

TechRadar’s review says management is more central than in Planet Zoo, while repeated timers and balancing dinosaur needs can feel like busywork. That makes Jurassic World Evolution 3 a strong choice for someone who wants a management-heavy follow-up, but a poor escape for anyone leaving the sequel specifically to avoid waiting cycles and constant operational tasks.

Who should choose it

  • Dinosaur fans who want breeding and park operations rather than modern wildlife.
  • Players who enjoy research chains, timed processes and balancing animal requirements.
  • Anyone looking for Campaign, Challenge and Sandbox modes in a prehistoric-park setting.

Choose by the part of Planet Zoo 2 you enjoyed

If habitat design was your favorite activity

Pick Planet Zoo first. It is the closest documented continuation of modern-wildlife habitat building and terrain shaping. Prehistoric Kingdom is the next choice if you want similarly hands-on construction but are happy to build around extinct species and support your park with logistics.

If you want less emphasis on the sequel’s career objectives

Use Planet Zoo in a mode that lets you focus on construction, or choose a Sandbox mode in Prehistoric Kingdom or Jurassic World Evolution 3. Sandbox changes the pressure, not necessarily the number of systems, so it will not remove every management task.

If you want deeper operational management

Choose Jurassic World Evolution 3 for the clearest shift toward scientists, expeditions, DNA, incubation and dinosaur-needs balancing. Choose Prehistoric Kingdom if staff logistics and resource delivery sound more interesting than a research-and-genetics pipeline.

If you want a different kind of zoo game

Let’s Build a Zoo is the deliberate change of format. Its official description supports the zoo-management and breeding focus, but it does not provide enough evidence to promise a simpler learning curve or less complex systems.

Construction freedom versus management intensity

These games separate along two practical axes. Construction freedom describes how much control you have over terrain, buildings, scenery and habitats. Management intensity describes how often the game asks you to solve staffing, resources, research, animal needs or visitor problems.

  • Highest continuity with creative building: Planet Zoo, because habitat construction, terrain shaping and creative building are its defining strengths.
  • Building with infrastructure pressure: Prehistoric Kingdom, where piece-by-piece construction is paired with resource delivery and trainable staff.
  • Management-first alternative: Let’s Build a Zoo, whose official description foregrounds zoo operation and breeding rather than promising a specific construction toolset.
  • Most explicit operational chain: Jurassic World Evolution 3, with scientists, fossil expeditions, DNA, traits, incubation and dinosaur-needs balancing.

If the sequel’s fiddly creation tools were your main complaint, do not assume that another game with modular construction will feel automatically easier. Test your tolerance for systems: Prehistoric Kingdom adds logistics, while Jurassic World Evolution 3 adds research and timed processes.

Modes, replay value and progression

Sandbox builders

Sandbox is explicitly available in Prehistoric Kingdom and Jurassic World Evolution 3. These modes are the natural starting point when you want to design without a tightly scripted objective path. They still contain each game’s underlying systems, so a dinosaur park may continue to require animal-needs balancing and a prehistoric park may still revolve around infrastructure.

Jurassic World Evolution 2 (PS4)
  • Immerse yourself in a compelling and original Jurassic World narrative set after the Earth-shattering events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
  • Take control with deeper management tools and creative options. Construct and customise new buildings and flex your managerial muscle across never-before-seen locations ranging from dense forests to rocky deserts.
  • Chaos Theory mode lets you play through key moments of your favourite films - with a twist. Experience "what-if" scenarios from iconic Jurassic World and Jurassic Park films, with each level set across eras and locations from all five movies.

Challenge and campaign structure

Prehistoric Kingdom offers Challenge mode alongside Sandbox. Jurassic World Evolution 3 offers Campaign and Challenge in addition to Sandbox. Campaign is the most guided option of the two, while Challenge is suited to players who want performance pressure without a fixed story structure.

Open-ended creative play

Planet Zoo remains the most direct choice when replay value comes from repeatedly designing habitats and reserves for modern wildlife. Its appeal is less about changing the subject and more about refining layouts, terrain and presentation.

Development status and buying checks

Check your local storefront before buying any of these games. Platform support, editions, regional prices and availability can change, and the available information does not establish a universal price or a single global edition for every market.

Treat Prehistoric Kingdom as Early Access. Its developer has stated a goal of reaching full release with Update 19 in 2027, while Update 18 was the active development focus in 2026. Read the current Steam listing for the latest build notes before deciding whether an in-development game suits you.

For every title, verify the platform you use—PC, Xbox or another supported storefront—rather than relying on a listing from a different region. This is especially important if you are moving from Planet Zoo 2 and expect the same controls, edition features or save compatibility; those details are not interchangeable between games.

Final recommendation

For most players asking “What should I play after Planet Zoo 2?”, the answer is Planet Zoo: it is the closest documented modern-wildlife match and keeps habitat construction and terrain shaping at the center. Choose Prehistoric Kingdom when extinct animals and logistics are the attraction, Let’s Build a Zoo when you want a different management-and-breeding format, and Jurassic World Evolution 3 when dinosaur genetics and operational management sound better than another wildlife reserve.
