January 9: title-related domains appeared
The first public clue was not a trailer or a retailer listing. On January 9, 2024, Lucasfilm registered domains using the phrase “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” including a domain specifically associated with a game. Domain registrations do not prove that a project is ready to launch, but they are a meaningful signal when the wording identifies a previously unannounced entertainment property.
#1 Best Overall
- STANDARD EDITION CONTENT — Includes the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle base game.
- BECOME INDIANA JONES — Play as the famed archaeologist in a first-person, single-player adventure set in 1937, between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.
- A WORLD OF MYSTERY — Travel from Marshall College to the Vatican, Egypt, and Sukhothai as you investigate an ancient power, meet intriguing characters, and solve riddles.
- WHIP-CRACKING ACTION — Use Indy’s trademark whip to distract, disarm, and attack enemies, swing over patrols, and scale walls. Combine stealth, melee combat, and gunplay to face the enemy threat.
- THE SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY — Move between linear, narrative-driven gameplay and open-area maps as you uncover secrets, avoid deadly traps, and solve fiendish puzzles.
The discovery was especially notable because the registrations were tied to Lucasfilm, the rights holder working with the game’s developer and publisher. The domains suggested that “The Great Circle” was more than a fan theory or an internal codename, but they still did not constitute an announcement.
January 11: reporting connected the clues
VGC reported the domain discovery on January 11 and said the proposed title was written in all caps in the registration material. The same report connected the name to a European trademark filing for “The Great Circle.” That filing listed video games among the intended goods and services, adding a second independent indicator that the phrase was being prepared for an interactive release.
PC Gamer identified two of the relevant domain names: indianajonesandthegreatcirclegame.com and indianajones-and-the-great-circle.com. Its report also explained that a great circle is a geographic term: the largest circle that can be drawn on a sphere. That definition fits the idea of an Indiana Jones story moving between distant parts of the world, although the registrations alone did not explain how the term functions in the plot.

January 18: Bethesda made the title official
Bethesda ended the uncertainty during its official Developer_Direct gameplay reveal on January 18, 2024. The presentation used Indiana Jones and the Great Circle™ as the game’s title, confirming that the earlier reports had identified the correct name.
This distinction matters when describing the story of the leak. The January 11 coverage should be called a reported leak or a credible title leak. The January 18 presentation was the official confirmation. Treating the domain registrations as an announcement would overstate what was known at the time.
| Date | Development | What it established |
|---|---|---|
| January 9, 2024 | Lucasfilm registered title-related domains. | A strong clue that “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” was being prepared as a project name; no official game details were confirmed. |
| January 11, 2024 | VGC reported the domains and linked the phrase to a European trademark filing. | Public reporting supplied credible leak evidence, including a video-game classification in the trademark filing. |
| January 18, 2024 | Bethesda revealed the game during Developer_Direct. | The title, developer partnership, format, story era, named locations, platforms and day-one Game Pass plan were officially announced. |
Why the domain and trademark evidence was persuasive—but limited
A domain registration is an administrative action, not a creative presentation. Companies register names defensively, reserve alternatives and sometimes abandon projects. A trademark filing likewise indicates an intention to protect a name for specified goods and services; it does not by itself guarantee a release, a final feature set or a launch date.
In this case, the evidence became persuasive because several details aligned: Lucasfilm controlled the registrations, the wording included “game,” and the trademark filing identified video games. The clues pointed toward a specific Indiana Jones project rather than a generic phrase. Even so, readers could not responsibly infer the game’s perspective, story placement, systems, platforms or subscription availability from the leak alone. Those facts arrived with Bethesda’s reveal.
What “The Great Circle” means
In geography, a great circle is the largest possible circle on a sphere. Any plane that passes through the center of a sphere creates a great circle; on Earth, routes following one can describe the shortest path between many distant points. The term therefore carries an immediate sense of global distance and connected destinations.
That geographic meaning is a fitting clue for the game’s travel-heavy premise. Bethesda’s reveal names the Vatican, Egypt, Sukhothai and the Himalayas among the locations, giving the title a literal globe-spanning context. The leak evidence did not establish whether the phrase refers to a specific artifact, organization, route or mystery in the narrative, so those interpretations should not be presented as confirmed plot details.

How the game plays: first-person and single-player
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a first-person, single-player action-adventure. “First-person” describes the camera perspective: the player experiences the action from Indy’s viewpoint instead of watching him continuously from behind in a conventional third-person view. “Single-player” identifies the intended mode, with the adventure built around one player rather than an announced cooperative campaign or competitive multiplayer format.
Design Director Jens Andersson explained the perspective choice this way: “Our game is about putting you in the shoes of an iconic hero,” adding that the first-person approach lets players “truly become Indy.” The comment describes the design goal behind the camera, not merely a technical specification. It signals that the developers want exploration, danger and problem-solving to feel immediate from Indiana Jones’s point of view.
The action-adventure label also sets an appropriate expectation without claiming mechanics that were not established in the announcement. The confirmed format supports a story-led experience combining travel and action, but the leak itself provided no reliable information about combat systems, puzzle structure, progression, mission length or difficulty options.

Where it fits in the Indiana Jones timeline
The story takes place between Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. This places the game in the period between those two films rather than presenting it as a retelling of either movie.
That placement gives the developers room to use an established version of Indiana Jones while telling an original adventure. It also explains why the setting can support multiple international destinations without requiring the game to follow the exact sequence of events shown in the films. The announcement confirms the interval in the film chronology; it does not identify the precise year, the opening incident or how the game’s characters connect to individual movie scenes.
Confirmed locations and the globe-spanning journey
Bethesda’s reveal names four locations among the game’s destinations:
Rank #3
- The Vatican, offering an Italian setting tied to the story’s European portion.
- Egypt, a location strongly associated with the archaeological mysteries of the series.
- Sukhothai, bringing the journey into Southeast Asia.
- The Himalayas, adding a high-altitude environment to the route.
The wording “among the globe-spanning locations” indicates that these are named examples, not necessarily a complete list of every area in the game. The reveal confirms their presence as destinations in the announced adventure, but it does not provide a complete map or specify the order in which players visit them.

The announced platforms are Xbox Series X|S and PC. Bethesda also said the game would be available on Game Pass from day one in the January 18, 2024 announcement.
These are platform and service details from the announcement, not conclusions drawn from the leak. The January domain and trademark reports did not establish an Xbox release, a PC version or subscription access. They also did not establish retail editions, regional pricing or a launch date. Those details require a current marketplace listing or a later publisher announcement and should not be retroactively attributed to the January leak.
What the leak did not prove
Readers searching for the leaked title often encounter assumptions that go beyond the evidence. The following distinctions keep the record precise:
- It did not prove a final release date. A reserved domain and trademark filing identify a name, not a shipping schedule.
- It did not reveal the camera perspective. The first-person design was confirmed during Bethesda’s presentation.
- It did not establish the story era. The placement between the second and third films came from the official reveal.
- It did not confirm platforms or Game Pass. Xbox Series X|S, PC and day-one Game Pass access were announcement details.
- It did not disclose the full location list. The reports offered the title clue; Bethesda named the Vatican, Egypt, Sukhothai and the Himalayas during the reveal.
Separating these points prevents a common error: treating every fact now associated with the game as if it had been known when the domains were discovered.
How to describe the title accurately
For the January 11 reports, use wording such as “the title was reportedly leaked through Lucasfilm domain registrations and a related trademark filing.” For coverage after January 18, use “Bethesda officially confirmed Indiana Jones and the Great Circle during Developer_Direct.” The first phrase preserves the uncertainty of the leak; the second records the later confirmation.
The official title includes the full phrase Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Shortening it to “the Great Circle” can obscure which project is being discussed, while calling the game merely “Bethesda’s Indiana Jones game” no longer reflects its confirmed name. When platform information matters, specify Xbox Series X|S or PC rather than implying that every Xbox or Windows device is supported.
