There is no universally strongest Nen category. The right Hatsu starts with the job you need it to perform, then uses nearby categories to cover weaknesses. Enhancement is the dependable choice for close combat; Transmutation rewards deception and adaptability; Emission extends pressure beyond your body; Manipulation wins through control; Conjuration builds specialized tools and rules; and Specialization is reserved for effects that do not fit the other five. A sound build makes one category its core, accepts the efficiency cost of support techniques, and uses restrictions deliberately rather than treating them as decoration.
What a Hatsu category actually determines
Nen is organized into six categories: Enhancement, Transmutation, Emission, Manipulation, Conjuration and Specialization. A category describes how aura is being used, not a character’s overall power level. Two users in the same category can have completely different ranges, conditions, information needs and matchups.

Canonical abilities are often mixed constructions. A character may have a dominant category and still rely on neighboring techniques for range, mobility, information or defense. Calling an ability “an Enhancement Hatsu” is therefore a statement about its center of gravity, not a claim that every part uses only one kind of aura.
The affinity model: efficiency is a trade-off, not a ranking
The canonical affinity model places the six categories around a hexagon. Your native category is the most efficient. The compatibility guide commonly used for this model describes adjacent categories at 60% efficiency, categories two steps away at 40%, and the opposite category at 20%. Those figures are a guide’s model, not a guarantee of damage, victory or talent.

Conditions, training, aura reserves and the exact design of an ability can matter more than a diagram. A simple technique with a clear trigger may outperform a theoretically efficient technique that requires information you cannot obtain. Treat the percentages as a warning about opportunity cost: investing in a distant category consumes time and aura that could have strengthened your main job.
Five questions to compare any proposed Hatsu
- What is the native-category efficiency? Identify the category doing the decisive work. If the core effect sits far from your affinity, explain why its unique payoff justifies the loss.
- How does it handle distance and mobility? State the effective range, whether the user must maintain line of sight or contact, and how the ability behaves when either fighter is moving.
- What setup and information does it require? List charges, marks, spoken commands, objects, observations or preparation time. A powerful effect that needs data you cannot safely collect is unreliable in practice.
- What are its defensive and recovery options? Decide how the build survives a surprise attack, protects concentration and functions after the first use. Offense without a reset plan is a fragile build.
- Which restrictions or vows create the payoff? Every limitation should buy a specific advantage. If removing a condition would not change the ability’s strength, the condition is probably needless complexity.
Use the answers to separate a coherent build from a list of impressive tricks. One category should have a clear job; adjacent categories should solve identifiable support problems.
Choosing Enhancement for a dependable frontline build
Choose Enhancement when your plan is to win exchanges directly: hit harder, withstand impact, reinforce a weapon or keep fighting after taking damage. Its value is consistency. You are less dependent on hidden information, elaborate setup or an opponent making a particular mistake.

What to add
Use a neighboring category for the problem Enhancement does not solve, such as limited reach, a feint or a way to force an approach. Keep the support effect narrow. If the secondary technique becomes a second main weapon, your training and aura budget are divided.

Gon’s Jajanken is an accessible example of an Enhancement-centered idea whose strength is tied to commitment and timing. It illustrates why a transparent charge can still be threatening when the payoff is large and the user can create the space to complete it.

Choosing Transmutation for deception and adaptability
Transmutation changes the properties of aura. It suits fighters who want an effect to behave in an unexpected way, alter how an opponent may approach, or switch between attack and defense without carrying a separate physical tool.
Where it excels
- Deceptive interactions that punish an opponent for assuming ordinary aura behavior.
- Flexible offense that can change with terrain, spacing or the opponent’s response.
- Abilities whose threat comes from how they are applied rather than from a single large blast.
What to watch
Adaptability can become vagueness. Define exactly what property is being changed, what it can affect and what it cannot. The opponent should be able to discover a rule through play; otherwise the ability risks becoming an answer to every situation with no meaningful decision point.

Canonical anchors
Hisoka’s Bungee Gum demonstrates how a distinctive aura property can support movement, traps and misdirection. Killua’s Godspeed shows a different route: a transmuted effect organized around speed and reaction. Neither example makes Transmutation “strongest”; each is strong because its property is matched to a precise fighting plan.
Choosing Emission when the fight cannot stay close
Emission is the natural starting point when your win condition must operate away from your body. It can support attacks, pressure, scouting concepts or assistance that remains useful while you reposition.
Questions to settle before committing
- How far can the effect travel before control or impact falls off?
- Does it require a target, a line of sight, a mark or a fixed location?
- What prevents an opponent from simply closing the distance and attacking the user?
- How much aura can be committed remotely without weakening personal defense?
An Emission core benefits from a defensive or mobility layer. A ranged projectile that leaves the user exposed is not a complete build; decide how you survive the interval between shots and what happens when the target reaches you.

Choosing Manipulation for control and indirect victories
Manipulation is suited to commands, traps and effects that make the opponent’s own position or behavior work against them. The “damage” may be a forced movement, a denied action, a captured object or a condition that ends the fight without a contest of strength.
Design the control channel
Specify what must happen before control is possible: contact, an implanted object, a spoken instruction or another defined trigger. Then define the command’s scope, duration and failure behavior. Narrow commands are easier to balance and harder for an opponent to misinterpret than an unrestricted “do anything” effect.
Respect information and counterplay
Manipulation often depends on knowing where the target is and what it will do next. Build a way to obtain that information safely, or your control effect may never be applied. Include a plan for a resistant, concealed or already-influenced target.
Choosing Conjuration for tools, information and rules
Conjuration creates aura-derived objects or rule-bound effects. It is a strong fit when the ability’s identity is a specialized instrument: something that records, searches, restrains, identifies or enforces a condition.
Make the object earn its complexity
List the object’s functions, activation conditions and limits before adding cosmetic features. A focused tool can solve a problem no general attack can address, while an object with many unrelated powers becomes difficult to use and defend.

Rules are part of the weapon
Conjured effects become more meaningful when their rules are explicit. State who can use the object, what information it reveals, what happens when a condition is broken and whether the object persists between encounters. Kurapika’s chains are a canonical example of a Conjuration-centered design whose conditions define its role as much as the chains themselves.
Choosing Specialization without treating it as a free power upgrade
Specialization covers effects that do not fit the other five categories. It is appropriate for a singular concept that cannot be expressed cleanly as reinforcement, altered properties, projection, control or a conjured object.
“Specialist” is not a universal ranking above the other categories. A specialized effect may be narrow, information-hungry or difficult to activate. Start by writing the exact phenomenon you want, test it against the five ordinary categories, and use Specialization only when none of them describes the core operation.
Chrollo’s Skill Hunter is a clear canonical example of a Specialist ability built around a highly specific concept. Its distinctiveness comes from its rules and prerequisites, not from an automatic multiplier that makes every Specialist superior.
How to build a balanced Hatsu step by step
- Write the win condition in one sentence. For example: “I win by forcing a close exchange,” “I win by keeping the opponent outside my reach,” or “I win by denying one decisive action.” If the sentence contains several unrelated victories, narrow it.
- Assign the core to one category. Choose the category that performs the sentence’s main verb. This is your training priority and your most efficient aura investment.
- Add one adjacent support function. Pick range, mobility, defense, information or setup reduction. Explain why the support category is worth its lower efficiency.
- Define the trigger and the failure state. State what activates the Hatsu, what interrupts it and what the user can still do afterward. A build that has no failure state has not been tested against reality.
- Set a restriction that buys a measurable benefit. Limit targets, duration, distance, frequency or circumstances only when the trade creates a clear increase in force, precision or reliability.
- Run three matchup checks. Test an opponent who rushes, one who retreats and one who has better information. If the Hatsu collapses in any case, add a small support answer rather than another unrelated attack.
- Audit aura and attention. Count how many effects must be maintained simultaneously. Remove features that consume focus without advancing the win condition.
Restrictions and vows: power purchased with freedom
Restrictions sharpen an ability by narrowing when or how it can be used. A vow may limit eligible targets, require a dangerous commitment, expose the user’s intent or impose a consequence for failure. The benefit is meaningful only if the restriction genuinely threatens the user’s plan.

Do not add arbitrary conditions because they sound dramatic. A restriction that never affects a real encounter contributes no useful tension and should not be treated as a source of automatic power. Conversely, a severe condition can make a narrow Hatsu formidable while leaving it helpless outside its intended matchup.
When comparing two builds, ask which one still functions after its vow cannot be satisfied. The better-balanced design has a fallback action, even if that action is weaker.

These examples are useful because they show abilities as constructed systems rather than isolated labels. Read the dominant category, supporting techniques, information requirements and restrictions together.
Common build mistakes
- Chasing a category ranking: There is no category that wins every matchup. Range, information, conditions and timing can overturn a favorable affinity.
- Making every category equally important: A six-part Hatsu usually pays the efficiency cost everywhere and excels nowhere. Give one category the decisive job.
- Ignoring setup: A charge, mark or command is part of the ability’s real cost. Design the space and time needed to create it.
- Confusing surprise with versatility: An effect opponents have not seen is useful once; a clear rule that remains difficult to answer is useful repeatedly.
- Writing vows without consequences: If breaking a condition has no practical cost, it is flavor text, not a balancing mechanism.
- Forgetting recovery: Decide what happens after the first use, after a miss and when the user is injured or out of aura.
The strongest Hatsu for your build is the one whose main category performs its central job efficiently, whose support techniques cover a defined weakness and whose restrictions create power without making ordinary encounters impossible. Category labels explain the construction; the matchup determines the result.
