Beyond: Two Souls is a cinematic, choice-led adventure about Jodie Holmes and Aiden, a supernatural entity linked to her. Critics have praised its performances, emotional story, and presentation, but opinions diverge over the gameplay and the story’s execution. The reception also varies by platform: the PS3 and PC Metacritic snapshots checked on October 7, 2026, show different scores and review samples.
What kind of game is Beyond: Two Souls?
Quantic Dream describes Beyond: Two Souls as a psychological action thriller following Jodie Holmes across the globe. Jodie was born connected to Aiden, a mysterious entity with supernatural powers. Players take control of both characters as Jodie faces losses and challenges while searching for the truth about herself; the player’s actions affect her fate. Quantic Dream’s official game page describes the experience as an interactive drama, with story scenes and choices at its center.

That focus makes the game a more natural fit for players who value character-driven storytelling and cinematic presentation than for those seeking mechanically deep action. It does include action and interaction sequences, but critics have disagreed about how satisfying those mechanics are.
What did critics like and dislike?
Praise in the reviews surfaced on Metacritic centers on the emotional impact, acting, visuals, and production. A Digital Spy excerpt reproduced on the PS3 critic page called it “one of the most poignant and enthralling stories we have encountered in a video game.” A GameSpot excerpt described it as “A fascinating experience that expertly links story and mechanics to further your connection to the world.” These are reviewers’ judgments, not claims from the developer.

The counterargument is that limited or simplified gameplay can make the experience less compelling, and some reviewers questioned the writing or narrative execution. A PC review excerpt from GameOver.gr, dated April 30, 2020, praised the cast and story while describing the gameplay as “oversimplified.” The criticism is not that the game has no interaction, but that its implementation and depth did not work for every reviewer.
How do the PS3 and PC review scores compare?
Metacritic’s platform pages show different critic results. The figures below are snapshots observed on October 7, 2026; scores and review counts may change as the aggregator updates. The PC sample is smaller and comes from a later release period, so the scores are not a controlled comparison of identical review pools.
| Platform | Metascore and label | Critic reviews | Displayed distribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS3 | 70/100, “Mixed or Average” | 98 | 52 positive, 38 mixed, 8 negative |
| PC | 76/100, “Generally Favorable” | 15 | 8 positive, 6 mixed, 0 negative |
Sources: Metacritic PS3 critic reviews and Metacritic PC critic reviews. The higher PC score reflects that page’s review sample; it does not establish that PC players will prefer the game or that every edition differs in the same way.
GameSpot’s listing gives October 8, 2013, as the first release date and lists PC, PS3, and PS4 platforms. It also displays GameSpot scores of 8 and 9 for separate reviews alongside a Metacritic score of 70; those individual GameSpot scores should not be confused with the platform-specific Metacritic figures. Which version should you choose?
Choose based on your platform and the features that matter to you rather than treating one aggregate score as a definitive verdict. The sources establish some edition-specific details, but not every feature difference across all versions.
- PS3: The Metacritic snapshot is 70/100 from 98 critic reviews. This is the original platform sample.
- PC: The snapshot is 76/100 from 15 critic reviews. Quantic Dream lists 4K resolution, 21:9 widescreen compatibility, and 60 fps among the PC features.
- PS4: Sony’s US listing gives the release date as November 24, 2015. It says the game is playable on PS5, with possible feature differences.
Quantic Dream says the PC edition offers solo or duo mode and lets players choose chronological or cinematic story order. Sony’s PS4 listing also mentions chronological or cinematic order, and identifies the game as one-to-two-player with Remote Play support.
