If Windows says bhoproxy.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to identify the program requesting it and repair or reinstall that program.
Do not download a random copy and place it in System32. That can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, and leave the original application damaged.

Before you repair anything, identify the program
The filename alone does not identify the current owner. The DLL may belong to an old browser-related utility, legacy application, or another program that is no longer fully installed. The name appears to reference a Browser Helper Object, but that connection is not enough to identify a specific product.
Recommended Free Tools
Start with the error window:
- Note the application name shown in the title bar.
- Check whether the message appears when opening a shortcut, game, browser, or utility.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check Target and Start in.
- Record the executable path before uninstalling or deleting anything.
If the error appears during startup:
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry with the same name as the erroring program or an unknown legacy item.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
You can also check Event Viewer:
- Press
Win + R. - Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the message appeared.
- Check the Faulting application path and Faulting module name fields.
The full path matters. A copy under an application folder may belong to that application. A copy in a temporary folder, an unexpected user-profile directory, or a random system location deserves additional security checks.

Fix 1: Repair the application that requests bhoproxy.dll
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Repair is the safest first step when the parent application is still installed.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application’s settings and user data. If the error remains and Reset is available, use it only after checking whether the application stores important local settings or saved data.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
Some traditional desktop programs do not appear with these options. For those applications:
- Press
Win + R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the application in Programs and Features.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
Restart Windows after the repair and test the same action that produced the error.
If Repair is unavailable, fails, or reports that the installation source is missing, continue with a clean reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall the parent program from its official source
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Reinstalling the application is the most likely permanent fix because bhoproxy.dll appears to be application-specific. A runtime installer cannot normally recreate an application DLL.
- Back up the application’s saved files or settings if you know where they are stored.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the software developer’s official site or the program’s official launcher.
- Install the correct build for your version of Windows.
- Start the program again.
For a game, open its official launcher and use Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files before uninstalling the entire game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the program is very old and no longer has an official installer, do not replace the DLL from a download index. First decide whether the legacy program is still trustworthy and necessary. An obsolete program that repeatedly creates startup errors may be safer to remove.
Run the program as administrator only for testing
If the repaired application still fails:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the program once.
If this works, the issue may involve permissions or an old installer design. Do not permanently grant administrator access to unknown software until you have checked its source and security status.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined the DLL. This does not prove the file was safe. It only explains why an application may suddenly stop starting.
In Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections recorded when the problem began.
- Expand any detection associated with
bhoproxy.dllor the parent application. - Note the detection name and original file path.
Do not immediately choose Restore. First check:
- Whether the original path belonged to the application.
- Whether the application came from an official source.
- Whether the file has a recognizable publisher and valid digital signature.
- Whether Microsoft Defender or another security product continues to detect it.
- Whether reinstalling the application recreates the file safely.
The preferred response is to reinstall the parent application from its official source. Restore the quarantined file only when you have verified that it is genuine and the security product or vendor confirms a false positive. Microsoft Defender can detect a restored file again unless you explicitly allow it.

If the detection suggests malware or a potentially unwanted program, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and remove the associated application or startup entry.
Fix 4: Remove a leftover startup entry after uninstalling old software
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Sometimes the application is already gone, but Windows still tries to load its DLL. This creates an error at sign-in even though no active program needs the file.
Check these locations:
Startup apps
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry clearly associated with the removed application.
- Restart Windows.
Startup folders
Press Win + R, enter each command separately, and inspect the shortcuts:
shell:startup
shell:common startup
Delete only shortcuts that clearly belong to software you intentionally removed.

Open Settings > Apps and remove the obsolete parent program if it is still listed. Do not delete an unknown application solely because its name looks unfamiliar. Check its file path and publisher first.
A stale scheduled task or service can also trigger the error. Open Task Scheduler and review tasks created by the removed program. Disable or remove one only when you can confidently associate it with that software.
Do not manually delete registry entries unless you have a backup and know exactly which application created them. A broken registry cleanup can create additional startup problems.
Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is actually missing
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean bhoproxy.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while another DLL that it needs is missing.
Check the application folder and the path shown in the error. If bhoproxy.dll is present, do not replace it automatically. The missing item may be a dependent component or an architecture mismatch.
The safest way to resolve this is to reinstall the parent application using its official installer. If the problem continues, collect:
- The full path of the application executable.
- The full path of
bhoproxy.dll, if present. - Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The exact Windows version.
- Any antivirus detection name.
- The dependency error reported by a reputable dependency-analysis tool.
A 32-bit program normally uses 32-bit dependencies, while a 64-bit program uses 64-bit dependencies. Do not substitute a 32-bit DLL for a 64-bit file or the reverse.

Fix 6: Install Microsoft Visual C++ only when the application needs it
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
There is no reliable evidence that bhoproxy.dll is itself a Visual C++ runtime file. Installing Visual C++ will not recreate this application-specific DLL.

On 64-bit Windows:
- A 32-bit application normally needs the x86 package.
- A 64-bit application normally needs the x64 package.
- Systems running both types of applications may need both.
Install the package requested by the application, restart Windows, and test again. If the only error remains bhoproxy.dll is missing, return to the parent application’s repair or reinstall process.
DirectX and .NET follow the same rule. Install them only when the application’s official requirements or error message identify them as missing. They are not confirmed fixes for bhoproxy.dll.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use Windows integrity repair when you have broader symptoms, such as several built-in Windows programs failing, damaged system files, update errors, or unexplained crashes. These commands are unlikely to recreate an unknown third-party DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the application again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the repair only after checking the exact result and considering Windows recovery options.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns bhoproxy.dll.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the error is part of a wider hardware problem
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A missing application DLL is not normally a driver problem. Consider driver repair only if the same failure began with display crashes, audio failures, device errors, or a recent hardware change.
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Check the driver provider and date.
- Use Update Driver or install the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official site.
Do not replace a driver simply because bhoproxy.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the exact versions instead of making you hunt through Device Manager; driver installation through the full version is optional, and it will not replace an application-specific DLL.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 is appropriate only for a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL when the software’s documentation specifically requires registration.
There is no verified evidence that this particular bhoproxy.dll exports DllRegisterServer. Running this command may produce an error, register the wrong file, or hide the real dependency problem:
regsvr32 bhoproxy.dll
Do not run it from an arbitrary folder and do not assume registration repairs a missing file. A Browser Helper Object name does not prove that this DLL should be manually registered.

Copying the file there can:
- Install malware globally.
- Create a 32-bit and 64-bit architecture mismatch.
- Cause DLL search-order conflicts.
- Leave the application using the wrong version.
- Fail because a dependency is still missing.
Only use a DLL supplied through the original application’s official installer and installation procedure.
When deleting the file is safer
Deleting bhoproxy.dll can be safer than restoring it when:
- Antivirus has identified it as malicious or potentially unwanted.
- The parent program has been intentionally uninstalled.
- The file is in a temporary or unexpected location.
- It is repeatedly quarantined after restoration.
- The application is obsolete and no longer trusted.
- A stale startup entry is the only reason Windows mentions it.
Before deleting it, record the full path and check which process or startup item references it. Quarantine is preferable to permanent deletion until you know the file is unnecessary. Remove the parent program and its leftover startup entry as well, or the error may continue after the DLL is gone.
What if the error returns after reinstalling
If a fresh official reinstall does not solve the problem, check the following in order:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Confirm that the erroring shortcut points to the newly installed executable.
- Check whether antivirus quarantines the DLL immediately.
- Confirm that the application and DLL are not being launched from an old backup or moved folder.
- Check for a second copy under another application or user profile.
- Verify whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Look in Event Viewer for the faulting application and module.
- Check whether a dependent DLL, rather than
bhoproxy.dll, is missing. - Test with a new Windows user account if only one profile fails.
- Remove stale scheduled tasks, services, or Run entries associated with the old installation.
If malware is suspected and normal cleanup fails, scan the system and use Windows recovery options, including reinstalling Windows from installation media when necessary.

FAQ
Is bhoproxy.dll a Windows file?
It is not confirmed as a Windows component. Available metadata describes it as the BhoProxy Module, with no reliable publisher identification. Do not place it in a Windows system folder.
Which program installed bhoproxy.dll?
No verified current parent application has been identified. Use the error path, shortcut target, Event Viewer, antivirus history, and application folders to identify the owner on your computer.
Should I download bhoproxy.dll from a DLL website?
No. An unverified download may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. Repair or reinstall the original application from its official source.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Usually not. Visual C++ can repair a separate runtime dependency, but it will not normally restore an application-specific bhoproxy.dll.
Should I register the file with regsvr32?
Not unless the application’s official documentation specifically requires it and the file supports self-registration. It is not a general DLL repair command.
Is bhoproxy.dll malware?
The file’s provenance is unverified, but that does not prove it is malicious. Treat an unknown copy cautiously, check its original path and security detection, and scan the system before restoring it.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the application requesting the file, check whether antivirus removed it, then repair or reinstall that application from its original official source.
