The best choice depends on whether your group is together, split across the landscape, trying to identify a distant landmark, or working through a station that needs a key, light or timing device. The official game materials confirm the core roster and its communication design; several more specific interactions below come from community guides and can change with updates.
Big Walk launched on August 4, 2026, for PC and Mac through Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and the Mac App Store. It supports crossplay and groups of 2–12 players. There is no solo mode or random matchmaking, so these tools are designed for an organized group that explores and solves problems together.

How Big Walk’s tool system works
Big Walk treats communication as part of the challenge. The official description says proximity voices fade with distance, echo in corridors, muffle through walls and crackle through walkie-talkies. That means an item can change what your teammates can perceive, not merely make a task faster. A person who leaves the group may need a long-distance signal; a team at the same puzzle may benefit more from a drawing, pointer or written instruction.

It does not publish a complete operating manual. The expanded inventory described later is therefore split into two levels: items named by official material, and behaviors or additional objects reported by community guides. Treat the latter as practical leads rather than guarantees after every patch.

Officially named tools versus guide-reported behavior
Where the official material only names an item, this guide avoids invented ranges, charges or damage values. For example, a flare is confirmed as part of the roster, but reports differ on whether a separate flare gun is present and how its recharge works. Likewise, the press kit marks the whiteboard, cowbell and golden head with question marks, suggesting playful or not-yet-explained uses rather than a published specification.

Communication tools: keeping a separated group together
Walkie-talkie
Use a walkie-talkie when a player must move beyond reliable proximity voice. The official feature description specifically says voices crackle through radios, so the sound is intentionally different from face-to-face speech. Give one to a scout or to each subgroup before splitting, agree on short call signs, and report fixed landmarks rather than trying to narrate every step.
A radio does not remove the need to navigate. A player can still misunderstand a direction, and the item does not establish a published distance, channel count or battery rule. Use it as a link for decisions—“we found the tower entrance”—then use a visual tool or shared landmark to refine the route.

Megaphone
Community guides describe the megaphone as projecting a player’s voice farther than normal. It is most useful when two players are separated by open ground but remain relatively close and one does not have a walkie-talkie. Call once, pause for a reply and avoid talking over another player’s proximity audio.
Because no official range is published, do not plan a split around a guaranteed number of metres. If the call is not heard, switch to a radio, flare or visible landmark instead of repeatedly shouting.
Flare
A flare supplies a visual signal when speech is difficult or a team needs to mark an approximate position. Community material also mentions a flare gun and a recharge delay, but another source only confirms flares. Check the current build’s inventory label and behavior before promising that a launcher, ammunition count or cooldown exists.
Use a flare for a simple message: “our subgroup is here” or “look toward this valley.” It is not a substitute for a precise route description. Fire or place it where the terrain gives the other team a clear line of sight, then confirm the signal with voice or text if possible.
Laser pointer
The laser pointer turns an imprecise call into a shared visual reference. Point at the bridge, doorway, rock formation or puzzle component you mean instead of saying “the one on the left.” It is especially valuable when several similar objects are visible and when a scout is relaying information from a distance.
A pointer identifies a target; it does not reveal hidden objectives or provide navigation data. Pair it with binoculars for distant observation, or with a written description when terrain blocks the beam.

Whiteboard
The whiteboard is officially listed with a question mark. A launch guide treats it as a surface for writing or drawing, making it useful for arrows, symbols, order-of-operations notes and reminders that would be lost in voice chat. Verify the current interaction prompt because the official material does not specify its exact controls, persistence or usable surfaces.
Use a whiteboard when the group needs a stable reference while rotating between stations. Keep diagrams minimal: mark the destination, the starting point and one or two decision points rather than covering the board with an unstructured map.
Cowbell
The cowbell is another question-mark item in the official roster. A community launch guide describes it as a noisemaker. That makes it a plausible local “find me” signal when players are close but cannot see one another, although its effective range and coordination value are not established.
Test it in a safe area before relying on it for a major split. If teammates cannot hear it through terrain or other sounds, use a radio, text chat or a visible marker instead.
Text chat and ordinary voice
Text chat is not an inventory item, but it is a full communication alternative. The official FAQ says it has the same features and intentional limitations as voice chat, including distance behavior and soundproof-glass constraints, and can carry a group through the whole game. Use short, directional messages when a player cannot speak, cannot hear reliably or prefers typing.
A dedicated headset is optional. The FAQ lists built-in microphones on Switch 2, PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers, Steam Deck and most laptops, as well as webcam and headset microphones. The game’s design does not require buying a separate audio device.
Scouting and visual information
Binoculars
Binoculars are the official roster’s primary long-range observation tool. Community guides describe using them to spot landmarks, puzzle locations and teammates before committing to a route. Have one player scan from a safe, elevated position while another remains with the group; report a landmark’s shape and relative position, then use a pointer or map to remove ambiguity.
Binoculars do not solve a puzzle by themselves. They reduce wasted travel and help the group choose which visible structure to investigate first.
Telescope
An AllThingsHow item guide lists a telescope for examining distant targets. This is a guide-reported object, not part of the short official roster excerpt, so its availability and interaction prompt may vary. Where it is present, treat it as a stationary or specialized observation aid rather than a replacement for binoculars carried into the field.

Map and compass
The same guide describes a static map in the Map Room, a handheld map for field reference and a compass that shows heading. These objects address different problems: the static map supports planning before departure, the handheld map keeps a moving subgroup oriented, and the compass helps distinguish direction when landmarks look similar.

Do not assume that a compass identifies the objective. Use it to maintain a heading, then confirm the destination with a landmark, binoculars or a teammate’s description. If your build presents different labels or icons, follow the in-game prompt rather than an older guide’s terminology.
GPS or coordinate tracker
Community material names a tracker that reports coordinates. Coordinates are most useful when two subgroups can compare positions numerically instead of relying on “behind the hill” descriptions. Record the coordinate and a nearby visual landmark together; numbers alone do not tell a teammate which path is traversable.
Item scanner
The guide-reported scanner marks nearby interactable objects. Sweep an area methodically when a station appears incomplete, but do not treat every highlighted object as part of the current objective. Confirm the puzzle’s visible requirements before carrying items across the map.
Carrying equipment and lighting
Waist or hip bag
An AllThingsHow guide describes the hip bag as holding a small second item. That extra slot is useful for a communication tool plus a puzzle component, allowing a player to keep a radio while collecting an object. A separate community item list says another player may need to remove items carried on a teammate’s back or hip in some interactions; verify that behavior in your version before making it a required hand-off procedure.
Backpack
The same guide describes the backpack as adding a full extra item slot. Assign it to the player who will carry shared puzzle pieces or return supplies to the group. Agree on ownership before leaving: a larger inventory helps only if teammates know who has the needed item and where that person is.
Ball lamp or lantern
The guide describes a ball lamp or lantern as area lighting. Community advice recommends taking a light before nighttime exploration, but no official rule says a particular lamp is mandatory for every night section. Use area lighting when several players need to inspect the same space or when you want to illuminate a meeting point.
Directional torch
A directional torch is described as lighting a specific object rather than a broad area. It suits close inspection of a clue, switch or surface while leaving the rest of the scene darker. Carry one when the task is detail-focused; choose area lighting when the whole group is moving together.
Keys, panels and other puzzle-progression objects
Key cutter and golden key
AllThingsHow describes raw keys being shaped at key cutters and golden keys opening buildings, rooms and routes associated with tower challenges. These are guide-reported mechanics, not a complete official progression order. When you find a cutter, note which key shape the station accepts and keep the finished key with the player responsible for the next locked route.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not infer a universal color sequence from a guide. The current build may change names, placement or the order in which a group encounters towers.
Control-panel pieces
The guide describes red pieces as rewards that fill a panel and release keys. Treat them as station-specific progression parts: inspect the panel, identify how many sockets are open and return pieces to that location rather than scattering them among players.
Timer
A timer is described as activating or completing nearby timed puzzles. Place or trigger it only after the group has identified the required positions and actions. If players are still searching for components when the timer starts, the countdown can convert a simple coordination task into repeated resets.
Sound shrine
Community instructions say that walking circles around a sound shrine changes its pitch as part of an audio puzzle. This interaction should be checked against the live build, especially if a player relies on hearing. If the sequence is difficult to perceive, use the game’s text and accessibility options, and have teammates describe the observed changes.
Recommended Free Tools
Golden head
The golden head appears in the official roster with a question mark. AllThingsHow associates it with a blindfolded obstacle course near the Blue Tower. That exact location and purpose are guide-reported, so treat the object as a special challenge item rather than assuming it unlocks every tower or follows a fixed sequence.
Paintbrush
The paintbrush is reported by AllThingsHow, not by the short official roster excerpt. The guide describes marking ground and surfaces with clues and changing avatar colors. Use those marks as player-created orientation aids, not as permanent developer-provided signs; confirm how long they remain visible and whether other players can see them in your session.

When the group splits into subgroups
Give each subgroup one dependable communication method before separation. A walkie-talkie is the strongest guide-reported choice for long distance; a megaphone can help with a nearby split; a flare or visible marker can communicate a location when speech fails. Decide where everyone will regroup and what landmark names mean before leaving.
When scouting an unknown area
Send a binocular user ahead while the main group stays near a known landmark. The scout should report the landmark, direction and any visible puzzle structure, then guide the team with a pointer, map or compass. Avoid sending every player in different directions before the route is understood.

Carry a light source recommended by your current build or group experience. Use an area lamp for shared movement and a directional torch for inspecting a particular object. Lighting advice from community guides is practical rather than an official requirement, so test whether a section actually needs illumination before treating one item as mandatory.

When a station is missing a component
Use the scanner, map or a deliberate visual sweep to identify nearby interactables. Keep puzzle parts together in a bag or backpack, record who is carrying them and avoid starting a timer until the team understands the station’s sequence. If a key is required, locate the cutter and confirm the finished key’s destination before splitting again.
When voice is unavailable
Switch to text chat from the start of the session instead of using it only after a problem occurs. The official FAQ says text preserves the same designed constraints as voice, so distance and occlusion still matter. Use compact messages with a direction, landmark and action, such as “north bridge, red panel, bring one piece.”
Multiplayer setup before the first walk
Group size, matchmaking and crossplay
Big Walk is intended for 2–12 players, supports crossplay and has no single-player mode or random matchmaking. Arrange the group through friends lists or a join code. A host can set a session password to keep an organized game private.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Host and save ownership
The session host keeps the save and progress. If the group returns later, that host needs to host again for the same progress to be available. Decide who can reliably return before investing in a long exploration, and share the join method with everyone before the session starts.
Physical-room etiquette
The FAQ recommends avoiding a shared room because hearing people outside the game undermines the communication challenges. One household can play, but use separate rooms and devices so in-game distance, walls and audio effects remain meaningful.
Accessibility and control options
The game’s challenges can involve hearing or reading, speaking or typing, quick reactions and fine motor control. No single setting addresses every need, so configure the relevant options before starting a difficult section.
- Challenge skipping: the host can enable it when starting a session for groups that cannot or do not want to complete a particular challenge.
- Control rebinding: move actions to inputs that are easier to reach or hold.
- Hold or toggle settings: use the available mode for controls that would otherwise require sustained pressure.
- Crosshair choices: select a more visible aiming reference where supported.
- Motion-reduction overlays: enable the listed overlays when movement effects are uncomfortable.
- Field of view: PC and Mac versions include a field-of-view adjustment.
- Text chat: use it for the entire game when speaking or hearing is not suitable.
Because challenge skipping is a host setting, agree on it with the whole group before launching. For audio-dependent tasks, pair text descriptions with visual tools and let the player who can best perceive the relevant cue direct the sequence.
How to verify a guide-based tool after an update
- Open the current inventory or interaction menu and confirm the object’s exact name.
- Test one basic action in a safe area: point, speak, mark, scan, illuminate or place.
- Check whether teammates can perceive the result at the distance and through the surface where you plan to use it.
- Record any charge, cooldown, slot or ownership behavior shown by the current build rather than relying on an older video.
- Keep a backup communication method—usually text chat or a walkie-talkie—before committing to a split.
This verification matters most for flares, whiteboards, cowbells, the golden head, paintbrushes and puzzle objects whose detailed behavior is documented by community guides rather than the official press kit.
A practical first-session loadout
For a new group, start with one communication item, one observation item and enough carrying capacity for a puzzle component. A walkie-talkie supports a planned split, binoculars identify the next landmark and a bag or backpack keeps the scout from abandoning the radio. Add a light before entering a dark area, then swap to a key, panel piece or timer only when the station tells you it is needed.
Keep the loadout flexible. Big Walk rewards clear information more than carrying every object at once: identify the task, assign the player best placed to perform it, communicate the result and regroup before opening a new route.
