To run a Biohazard: Project Genesis multiplayer server, use the dedicated Biohazard_Beta_0.4.6.1_server_pack for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, install Java 17, accept Minecraft’s EULA, and give the server about 8 GB of memory. Every player must install the same modpack release as the server. The pack is still being developed, so back up the world before every update. macOS players may need to disable CraftPresence if the game crashes during launch.

What Biohazard: Project Genesis is

Biohazard: Project Genesis is an open-world, story-driven zombie-apocalypse modpack built for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. Its design combines a quest campaign, multiplayer survival, radiation exposure, fungal infection systems, evolving hostile creatures, and more than 100 weapons. Void Cube Studios describes it as a custom apocalyptic modpack focused on immersion, progression, and a connected universe.

The project remains in active development. That matters for server administrators: configuration names, world-generation behavior, quests, and performance can change between releases. Treat the server-pack version as part of the server’s identity rather than assuming that any 1.20.1 Forge installation will be compatible.

Current release baseline

The latest release identified for this guide is Biohazard_Beta_0.4.6.1_server_pack, uploaded on September 13, 2026. It targets Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge. Its notes mention server optimization for larger player groups, radiation visual and performance changes, world and spawn adjustments, quest and user-interface revisions, and changes intended to improve Mac compatibility.

CurseForge snapshots recorded 877,024 project downloads in an August 20, 2026 listing update and 951,681 downloads on the September 13, 2026 release-page snapshot. Those figures describe downloads, not concurrent players or guaranteed server capacity.

Requirements at a glance

Item What to use Why it matters
Minecraft 1.20.1 The modpack and Forge files are built for this game version.
Mod loader Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 The pack will not load correctly under another loader or game version.
Server files Dedicated Biohazard_Beta_0.4.6.1_server_pack A client archive is not a substitute for the server pack.
Java Java 17 The setup guidance specifies Java 17 for this release line.
Memory About 8 GB allocated to the server The modpack’s large content load and world systems need substantially more memory than a small vanilla server.
Clients Exactly the same modpack release as the server Different versions can cause missing-mod, registry, quest, or connection errors.
Backups A copy of the world before every update Release notes discuss save carry-over and fixes, but no update should be treated as risk-free.

Prepare the machine before installing

Choose a host with headroom

A dedicated computer or virtual server is easier to manage than a machine that is also rendering games, recording video, or running other heavy services. The stated memory target is for the Minecraft process; the operating system and any monitoring, backup, or web services need additional memory. Leave free disk space for the world, logs, crash reports, temporary update files, and at least one backup copy.

CPU performance still affects play even when memory is sufficient. World generation, entity processing, quests, radiation effects, and large groups of hostile mobs can create short CPU spikes. A host with a modern, reasonably fast processor is preferable to one that merely advertises a large amount of RAM.

Install and verify Java 17

Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime or development kit appropriate for the host operating system. Open a terminal or command prompt and run:

java -version

Confirm that the reported major version is 17. If the command is missing or reports another major version, fix the system path or use the full path to the Java 17 executable before running the installer or server.

Create a separate server directory

Use a directory dedicated to this instance. Avoid placing it inside a synchronized cloud folder or a location where the operating system automatically cleans temporary files. Give the account that will run the server read and write access to the directory; Forge and the mods must be able to create configuration files, libraries, logs, and world data.

Install the dedicated server pack

  1. Download the server archive. Select the dedicated server pack for the current release, not the client-only modpack zip. Keep the downloaded archive until the installation has been tested so you can restore a clean copy.
  2. Extract it into the server directory. Preserve the folder structure supplied by the pack. Do not flatten nested folders or move individual mod files unless the release instructions specifically tell you to do so.
  3. Check whether Forge is already installed. Some server packs include the required loader files or a launcher script. If the extracted files do not contain an installed Forge server, obtain the Forge installer for Minecraft 1.20.1 and place it in the server directory.
  4. Install Forge when necessary. From that directory, run the installer with Java 17:
java -jar forge-installer.jar --installServer

The filename may differ if the downloaded installer uses a versioned name; use the actual filename in your directory. The installer should create the Forge server files and libraries rather than installing a client profile.

  1. Start the server once. Use the launch script included with the pack, or the Forge server launch command created by the installer. The first run can take several minutes while Forge and the mods register files.
  2. Accept the EULA. Stop the process after it creates eula.txt, open that file, change the value to eula=true, save it, and start the server again.
  3. Wait for a completed startup. Do not invite players until the console reports that the server has finished loading and is ready to accept connections. A first boot that appears idle may still be processing libraries or generating configuration files.

Set memory and create a reliable launch routine

Allocate about 8 GB to the Java process, using the launch script supplied with the pack or the Forge-generated script. In a custom script, the relevant Java option is:

-Xmx8G

-Xmx sets the process’s maximum heap; it does not reserve all system memory for Minecraft. Keep enough memory for the operating system and other services. If the host begins swapping, the server can become less responsive even though the Java maximum has not been reached.

Use a persistent terminal session, service manager, or equivalent process supervisor so the server does not stop when you close a remote shell. Keep the console visible during the first several starts. Logs provide the best evidence when a mod fails to load, a configuration is malformed, or Java is the wrong version.

Do not copy client settings blindly

Client graphics options, shader files, key bindings, and client-only quality-of-life mods do not belong in the server directory. Start with the files delivered by the server pack and add configuration changes deliberately. A clean baseline makes it possible to identify whether a later change caused a startup or connection failure.

Configure access without weakening the server

Local testing

First connect from the same machine or local network. This confirms that Forge, the modpack, the world, and the EULA are working before you troubleshoot router or firewall settings. If local connections fail, changing Internet-facing settings will not solve the underlying problem.

Firewall and router work

For players outside your home network, allow the Java server process through the host firewall and forward the Minecraft server port selected in the server configuration to the machine running the instance. The exact port and bind address are controlled by the generated configuration, so read those values instead of assuming that another server’s settings apply.

Only expose the port needed for the game server. Keep remote administration, file shares, and the operating system’s management interfaces restricted to trusted networks or a secure administration method. A managed host usually handles the public network endpoint, while a self-hosted instance leaves these tasks to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control who can join

Use the server’s whitelist and operator permissions for a private group. Give operator access only to people who need it; operator commands can change or destroy worlds. Keep a written record of configuration changes so a later update does not leave you guessing which setting changed behavior.

Set up every player’s client

  1. Install the matching Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge profile.
  2. Install the same Biohazard: Project Genesis release as the server—currently 0.4.6.1 for this guide.
  3. Launch once and allow the client to finish registering mods and creating its configuration files.
  4. Use the server address supplied by the administrator after the server has completed startup.

Do not mix a newer client with an older server or vice versa. Even when both versions use Minecraft 1.20.1, changes to mod registries, quests, world data, or configuration can prevent a connection or produce a broken play session. When troubleshooting, have every player record the exact pack version shown by the launcher and compare it with the server’s archive name.

macOS compatibility and launch crashes

The current release notes say that Impossible Library was removed, addressing one source of Mac incompatibility. The project’s general listing still warns that Mac users may encounter launch crashes involving CraftPresence. If a macOS client crashes before reaching the title screen, disable CraftPresence in that client’s installed mods, then launch again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply the workaround only to the affected client unless the server pack explicitly includes a server-side component. Do not delete unrelated mods while trying to fix a Mac crash; changing several files at once makes it harder to identify the cause. If the crash continues, compare the Java major version, Forge profile, and pack version with the working installation before changing world files.

Back up and update without risking the world

Before every update

  1. Tell players to log out and stop the server cleanly from its console.
  2. Copy the complete world directory to separate storage. Include the server configuration and scripts when you need to reproduce the instance.
  3. Keep the old server-pack archive and note the date, version, and any configuration changes.
  4. Install the new release in a separate directory when possible, rather than overwriting the known-good instance.
  5. Start the updated server with the backup available, watch the logs, and test spawn, quests, inventories, and a representative area before reopening it.

Release 0.4.5 and 0.4.6.1 include notes about save carry-over and fixes, but those notes are not a guarantee that every custom configuration or partially generated world will migrate perfectly. A rollback is possible only if the old files and a pre-update world backup still exist.

Keep backups usable

Periodically restore a copy to a temporary directory and confirm that it starts. A backup that has never been tested may be incomplete, locked by another process, or missing a required configuration file. Store at least one copy outside the live server machine so a disk failure cannot remove both the world and its backup.

Performance considerations for an apocalypse server

Biohazard’s systems are more demanding than a small vanilla survival world. Radiation effects, fungal infection mechanics, custom creatures, quests, and a large weapon set all add work while players explore. Encourage players to spread out gradually during the first world-generation pass rather than sending everyone in different directions at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch the console and system metrics for sustained memory pressure, CPU saturation, and rapidly growing logs. If lag appears only when many zombies are present, inspect mob-related configuration before increasing memory indefinitely.

The horde-multiplication change

Release 0.4.5 disabled hordeMultiplying by default after an extreme zombie-count problem. Leave that safer default in place unless you have a specific, tested reason to change it. Re-enabling a setting associated with runaway entity growth can overwhelm a server regardless of the heap size.

When testing a configuration change, make it on a copy of the world, record the old value, and observe entity counts and tick responsiveness before applying it to the public instance.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, backups, configuration, and update timing. It also makes you responsible for Java, memory allocation, firewall and router work, operating-system maintenance, monitoring, and recovery. Managed Minecraft hosting moves much of that operational work to a provider, but you trade some low-level control for a recurring service relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Self-hosted server Managed server
Recurring cost No hosting subscription is required, but you supply the computer, electricity, storage, and Internet connection. A recurring price applies; no current provider price is established here.
Initial setup You install Java 17, the server pack, Forge when needed, EULA settings, firewall rules, and network forwarding. The provider may offer an installer or control panel, but the exact workflow depends on the service.
RAM and CPU headroom You choose the machine and can upgrade it directly; capacity is limited by your hardware. The available plans and performance vary by provider; no benchmark or guaranteed player count is established here.
Backups and restore You control schedules, locations, retention, and test restores. Backup tools may be included, but retention, restore speed, and download access must be checked in the plan terms.
Modpack updates You can stage a new release beside the old one and roll back from your own archive. A panel may simplify file replacement, but you still need a world backup and matching client versions.
Network configuration You handle firewall rules, port forwarding, address changes, and home-network reliability. The provider normally supplies a public endpoint, while you remain responsible for server access controls.
Support You diagnose Java, Forge, mod, operating-system, and network failures yourself. Support response and scope depend on the provider; no service-level comparison is established here.

Choose self-hosting when

  • You already have a stable machine and reliable upload bandwidth.
  • You want complete access to files, logs, scripts, and backups.
  • You are comfortable maintaining Java, firewall rules, and updates.
  • Your group can tolerate occasional maintenance windows while you troubleshoot.

Choose managed hosting when

  • You do not want to expose a home network or maintain router rules.
  • You prefer a control panel and provider-assisted restarts.
  • You need a public server without buying or operating a separate computer.
  • You have confirmed that the service supports custom Forge 1.20.1 modpacks, enough memory for this pack, file access, and restorable backups.

The official project site promotes managed hosting as an optional way to create a Biohazard server and advertises a 25% discount code, VOIDCUBE. The site does not publish commission, cookie, or enrollment terms, so treat that offer as a promotion to verify directly rather than as evidence of performance, price, or support quality.

Troubleshooting by symptom

“Java is not recognized” or the installer will not run

  • Run java -version and confirm Java 17.
  • Correct the system path or invoke the Java 17 executable by its full path.
  • Run the Forge installer from the server directory so it can write its libraries there.

The server stops immediately after first launch

  • Check whether eula.txt was created and set eula=true.
  • Read the last lines of the log for a missing library, wrong Java version, or malformed configuration.
  • Restore the untouched server-pack files if individual mods or client files were copied into the directory.

Players receive a missing-mod or registry error

  • Compare the client and server pack archives character for character, including the beta release number.
  • Confirm that both sides use Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge.
  • Remove client-only additions that are not part of the official pack before testing again.

Players cannot connect from outside the host network

  • Test a local connection first.
  • Verify that the Java process is allowed through the host firewall.
  • Check that the router forwards the configured server port to the correct machine and that the server is not bound only to a local address.
  • Confirm that the public address has not changed and that the server is actually running.

The world becomes unresponsive when hordes appear

  • Check whether hordeMultiplying was manually enabled; release 0.4.5 disabled it by default after an extreme zombie-count issue.
  • Stop the server cleanly and preserve a backup before changing mob-related settings.
  • Observe CPU, memory, and entity behavior after each change instead of applying several changes at once.

macOS crashes before the menu

  • Disable CraftPresence in the client installation.
  • Confirm Java 17 and the matching Forge profile.
  • Use the current pack release, in which Impossible Library was removed, rather than carrying an older client’s mods forward.

Launch-day checklist

  • Dedicated 0.4.6.1 server pack extracted into its own directory.
  • Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge selected on every client.
  • Java 17 verified with java -version.
  • Forge server installed if the pack did not include it.
  • First boot completed and eula=true saved.
  • Approximately 8 GB assigned to the server process, with additional memory left for the operating system.
  • Local connection tested before Internet exposure.
  • Firewall and router rules limited to the configured game-server port.
  • Whitelist and operator permissions reviewed.
  • World backup created and stored separately before players begin.
  • All clients checked against the exact server-pack release.
  • macOS players prepared to disable CraftPresence if launch crashes occur.
