Short answer: the original BioShock 2 included a separate competitive multiplayer experience set during Rapture’s fall. It was not a cooperative version of the single-player campaign. BioShock Infinite shipped without multiplayer, and BioShock: The Collection omits the original BioShock 2 multiplayer mode entirely.
That distinction matters when you are deciding which edition to buy. “Multiplayer” is a broad label: it can describe cooperative play, competitive matches, or another online mode. In this series, the wording does not mean that two players can run through a BioShock story together.

At a glance: which BioShock game has multiplayer?
| Game or edition | What is included | Co-op campaign? | Important buying note |
|---|---|---|---|
| BioShock 2 original release | A separate Rapture-set multiplayer experience. Players act as Plasmid test subjects and progress with weapons, Plasmids and Tonics. | No cooperative playthrough of the story is established by the official descriptions. | Look for the original edition on the specific platform you intend to use. The product listing advertises multiplayer, but it does not establish that matchmaking is active today: Steam product listing. |
| BioShock Infinite | Single-player game only in the released version. | No. | There is no released multiplayer mode to select. Ken Levine’s answer to whether the game would have multiplayer was reported as “Nope”: GameSpot. |
| BioShock: The Collection | The three games’ single-player content and related extras, but not BioShock 2 multiplayer. | No. | Do not buy the collection expecting the original online mode. The collection announcement explicitly says, “Multiplayer will not be included”: 2K/Steam announcement. |
| BioShock 2 Remastered as included in the collection | Remastered single-player content. | No. | Remastering the campaign did not restore the original multiplayer component. |
The result is not a matchup between two equivalent online modes. The original BioShock 2 had a distinct multiplayer offering; Infinite did not; and the later collection removed that offering.
What the original BioShock 2 multiplayer actually is
A separate experience set during Rapture’s fall
The original game’s listing describes its multiplayer as taking place “during the fall of Rapture,” with each participant assuming the role of a Plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions. That is a setting and character premise separate from the single-player protagonist’s campaign. You are not selecting a second player to accompany you through the story’s levels; you are entering a dedicated multiplayer mode built around Rapture’s collapse.

Take-Two’s May 8, 2009 announcement similarly said that players would “step into the shoes of Rapture citizens” and learn more about the city’s fall as they progressed through the experience. That language explains why the mode can feel connected to the fiction without being a cooperative campaign. Its narrative context expands the world, while its actual play structure is a standalone multiplayer activity. The announcement is available from Take-Two/2K.
Weapons, Plasmids and Tonics form the progression system
The mode uses the same broad vocabulary that defines BioShock’s combat and character building: conventional weapons, supernatural Plasmids and passive Tonics. The original listing presents those systems as part of multiplayer progression. In practical terms, that means the mode was designed as its own shooter experience with unlocks and loadout choices, rather than as an option for adding a friend to the campaign.
Those terms are useful when checking an old product description. A reference to Tonics or Plasmids in a multiplayer listing is describing the dedicated mode’s equipment and progression, not promising that a second player can join the story. Likewise, seeing Rapture characters in the announcement does not mean the campaign’s save files, checkpoints or objectives are shared online.

Those details should not be inferred from the existence of weapons, Plasmids and Tonics. What is established is the mode’s identity: a separate Rapture-set multiplayer experience featuring Plasmid test subjects and progression through those three categories of equipment and abilities.
Why “multiplayer” does not mean “co-op” here
Co-op normally means that two or more people work together toward shared objectives, often through the same campaign or mission sequence. Multiplayer is broader: it can include cooperative play, competitive play or a standalone online structure. The official descriptions call the BioShock 2 feature multiplayer, but they do not describe a cooperative run through the single-player story.
Therefore, a search result or store label that says “BioShock 2 co-op” should not be read as confirmation of campaign co-op. The accurate description is “the original BioShock 2 multiplayer mode,” with no claim that it lets a friend join the story beside you. This also explains why reviews or forum posts that use “multiplayer” and “co-op” interchangeably can create the wrong expectation.
Does BioShock 2 have co-op?
No—not as a cooperative story campaign. The original release had multiplayer, but the official descriptions establish it as a separate experience rather than a two-player version of the single-player plot. There is no supported basis here for promising shared campaign checkpoints, a second protagonist, cooperative objectives or drop-in/drop-out story play.

- If you want to play through the BioShock 2 campaign with a friend: the original multiplayer feature is not evidence that you can do that.
- If you want a separate online mode set in Rapture: the original release is the edition associated with that feature.
- If you own the remaster or collection: the included BioShock 2 content does not contain the multiplayer mode.
The absence of campaign co-op is not a statement about whether two people could have played in the same online session under some historical mode rules; it is the narrower and safer point that the feature was not a cooperative playthrough of BioShock 2’s story.
Does BioShock Infinite have multiplayer or co-op?
No. The released version of BioShock Infinite has no multiplayer mode. That means there is no co-op campaign, competitive playlist or separate online mode to launch. GameSpot reported creative director Ken Levine’s response to the multiplayer question as “Nope,” which matches the content of the released game: GameSpot’s report.
Infinite is consequently not a multiplayer alternative to the original BioShock 2. Buying Infinite for two-player support will not produce a playable online mode. Its connection to the comparison is useful precisely because it demonstrates the difference between a game with a dedicated multiplayer component and one released without multiplayer at all.

If an old preview, rumor or discussion mentions a possible multiplayer idea for Infinite, treat that as separate from the product that was actually released. The released game has no menu option, campaign feature or competitive mode for another player to activate.
What BioShock: The Collection includes—and leaves out
The collection is aimed at the single-player games
The official store presentation describes BioShock: The Collection as a package containing the series’ games and their single-player content. You can verify the collection’s product information through the 2K Store. That makes it a sensible choice for someone seeking the campaigns in one package, but it is not the way to obtain the original BioShock 2 online mode.
Multiplayer was explicitly excluded
2K’s collection announcement is unusually direct: “Multiplayer will not be included.” The same announcement is available through Steam’s copy of the 2K announcement. This is not an omission that can be corrected by enabling a hidden menu, installing a campaign add-on or choosing a different difficulty. The collection release simply does not package the original multiplayer component.
The PlayStation overview also presents the collection as a refreshed version of the three classic games’ single-player experiences: PlayStation Blog. In other words, “remastered” describes the included campaign content; it does not mean that every feature from every original release was carried forward.

| Question | Original BioShock 2 | BioShock 2 in The Collection |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player campaign | Included. | Included in remastered form. |
| Separate multiplayer mode | Advertised as part of the original release. | Not included. |
| Rapture setting | Campaign and multiplayer context. | Campaign content remains; the multiplayer component is absent. |
| Current online operation | Not established by the cited sources. | No multiplayer package is present, so there is no collection matchmaking to verify. |
The word “remastered” is the main trap. It describes presentation and the included single-player package, not a guarantee that every subsystem from the original release survived. For this comparison, the missing subsystem is decisive: the collection cannot provide the original multiplayer because that component was expressly left out.

Which edition should you buy?
Choose the original edition only if multiplayer is your priority
Readers specifically seeking the historic multiplayer mode should investigate the original BioShock 2 listing for their platform, not a remastered listing or BioShock: The Collection. Check the product title, platform, region and edition before purchasing. The original Steam listing is the relevant starting point for identifying the release that advertised the mode: Steam product listing.
Do not assume that a listing mentioning “BioShock 2” is the original release. Sellers may use the franchise title while offering the remaster or the collection. Read the edition name, inspect the feature list and confirm that the page refers to the original product rather than a bundle of remastered campaigns.
That listing alone does not prove that matchmaking still works. A store page can document what a game shipped with while saying nothing about present-day servers, account services, community activity or platform compatibility. Treat the mode’s historical inclusion and its current accessibility as two separate questions.
Choose The Collection for the campaigns
If your goal is to play the single-player stories, BioShock: The Collection is the package whose contents are described by 2K and PlayStation as the three games’ single-player experiences. It is not a multiplayer purchase. The collection announcement’s explicit exclusion is the deciding fact for anyone comparing editions: “Multiplayer will not be included.”
The collection can therefore be the right choice for a first playthrough, a remastered presentation or access to the campaigns in one package. It is the wrong choice if the purchase depends on launching BioShock 2 multiplayer, because that feature is absent rather than merely disabled by default.
Do not use Infinite as a two-player substitute
BioShock Infinite cannot fill the multiplayer gap. The released game has no online mode, so changing editions of Infinite will not reveal a co-op or versus option. If a listing, video or forum post suggests otherwise, verify whether it is discussing an unreleased idea, a fan modification or a different BioShock title; none of those would establish a supported multiplayer mode in the released game.
How to check a listing before you purchase
- Read the exact product name. Confirm that it says the original BioShock 2, not BioShock 2 Remastered or BioShock: The Collection.
- Confirm the platform. A feature documented for one release should not be assumed to exist on every later port or package.
- Look for a multiplayer statement in the platform’s own listing. The original listing is evidence that the release advertised the mode; it is not proof of current service operation.
- Separate inclusion from availability. Search for current, platform-specific information about matchmaking before spending money if active online play is essential.
- Check the seller’s edition and region details. A used copy, bundle or remaster may have a similar title while containing different software.
- Buy the collection only for what it actually contains. It is suited to the campaigns and does not include BioShock 2 multiplayer.
What is—and is not—known about playing online today?
The cited material establishes historical feature inclusion, not present-day matchmaking status. It does not provide a current server announcement, active-player count, lobby report, platform-by-platform compatibility table or guarantee that a purchased copy will find opponents. Consequently, no responsible comparison can promise that the original mode is populated or operational on your system today.
Before buying for online play, check recent information for your exact platform and region. Look for a current service notice, recent player reports and confirmation that the required account or network functions still operate. Those checks are separate from the edition question answered here: the original release is the one associated with multiplayer, while the collection is not.

Can two people play BioShock 2’s story together?
There is no supported basis in the official descriptions for campaign co-op. The original game’s multiplayer was a separate experience, not a cooperative story mode.
Is BioShock 2 multiplayer versus or cooperative?
The sources identify it as a separate multiplayer shooter-style experience with Plasmid test subjects and progression, but they do not establish a complete list of match formats. Do not label it co-op simply because it is multiplayer, and do not add specific match-type claims that are not documented here.

Are BioShock 2 multiplayer and BioShock 2 campaign the same progression?
The descriptions present multiplayer as a separate experience with its own weapons, Plasmids and Tonics progression. They do not establish shared campaign saves, shared ranks or cross-mode progression, so those features should not be assumed.
The practical answer for each type of player
- You want a shared story campaign: none of the releases covered here provides a BioShock co-op campaign.
- You want the original Rapture-set online mode: investigate the original BioShock 2 edition and verify current platform availability independently.
- You want the remastered campaigns: choose BioShock: The Collection, understanding that its BioShock 2 content is single-player only.
- You want BioShock Infinite online play: there is no released mode to buy or activate.
- You are buying for a group: identify the exact edition for every player; owning the collection does not substitute for owning the original multiplayer release.
The most important purchasing distinction is therefore between BioShock 2 as originally released and the later collection. “BioShock multiplayer” is not a blanket feature across the franchise, and “BioShock co-op” is not an accurate description of the original BioShock 2 mode.
