The reason is decisive: EA said Anthem was designed as an online-only game, with no playable version once its servers were gone.
When did Anthem shut down?
EA and BioWare announced the sunset on July 3, 2025, setting January 12, 2026, as the final day of service. EA’s announcement said, “After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026.” EA’s official announcement and FAQ gave that date; Ars Technica’s January 5, 2026 report covered the impending shutdown, and later reporting confirmed the servers were taken offline.

- July 3, 2025: EA announced the sunset.
- August 15, 2025: EA scheduled Anthem’s removal from the EA Play playlist.
- January 12, 2026: EA’s scheduled end-of-service date; the servers have since gone offline.
EA specified the shutdown date, not an exact time of day.
Why can’t you play Anthem offline?
Anthem depends on EA’s servers. The official FAQ states: “Anthem was designed to be an online-only title so once the servers go offline, the game will no longer be playable.” With the service shut down, installing the game does not provide a standalone offline campaign.

Does owning Anthem, a disc, or an EA Play subscription help?
No. Ownership does not restore the server service. EA said previous purchasers could download the game from their digital libraries and play until January 12, 2026; that temporary access period has passed. A physical disc does not bypass the online-only requirement.
EA scheduled Anthem’s removal from the EA Play playlist for August 15, 2025, months before the server shutdown. The official notice provides no current subscription route to play the game.

What happened to Anthem’s premium currency?
EA said purchases of premium currency had ended before the shutdown and that players could spend existing balances only until the game sunset. Those balances cannot be used in the game now that its service has ended.

EA’s announcement establishes that the game would no longer be playable after the servers went offline. It does not describe an official offline patch or publisher-supported private-server route. The available official information therefore offers no supported way to restore playability.
