No. In Grounded, wearing Black Ant Armor does not make black ants ignore you. Black worker ants and black soldier ants still treat the player as hostile according to a June 24, 2025 gameplay guide. The armor is a combat set, not a black-ant disguise: its documented benefits are stronger stun buildup from attacks and reflected damage.
What Black Ant Armor actually does
Black Ant Armor is equipment associated with the Black Anthill content in Grounded. Obsidian Entertainment’s update notes describe two relevant effects:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Armor status effect: all attacks build extra stun gauge.
- Set bonus, Pincushion: a portion of damage dealt to the wearer is reflected back to the attacker.
Neither effect is camouflage. The set improves how you fight; it does not change your relationship with black ants or make the colony regard you as one of its members. Put another way, Black Ant Armor is designed for confrontation in ant-heavy areas, not for walking through them unnoticed.

The official notes also distinguish black worker ants from black soldier ants. Soldiers are described as guarding against intruders, which is consistent with treating the Black Anthill as a hostile location rather than a place where this armor grants safe passage.

Do black workers and black soldiers react differently?
For the question that matters when you enter the anthill, the answer is the same for both groups: the available direct guidance says neither black ants nor black soldier ants ignores a player wearing Black Ant Armor.
That distinction matters because players sometimes assume the armor might fool ordinary workers while only soldiers remain dangerous. The documented guidance does not support that split. You should plan for hostility from both types instead of relying on one class to overlook you.
The direct aggression statement comes from the Games Learning Society guide published June 24, 2025. It is secondary guidance rather than an official mechanics reference, so it should be read alongside, not substituted for, Obsidian’s description of the armor’s effects. Together, the sources support a clear practical rule: equip the set for combat benefits, never as an ant disguise.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy players confuse Black Ant Armor with a disguise
The confusion most likely comes from comparing it with Red Ant Armor. The guide presents Red Ant Armor as the disguise-oriented option and contrasts that role with Black Ant Armor. That comparison can make the black set sound as though it should provide the same social protection against black ants, but the documented Black Ant Armor effects contain no disguise or nest-acceptance language.
Do not generalize from the existence of a red-ant disguise mechanic to every ant-themed armor set. Armor names are not evidence that a set changes faction recognition. In this case, the named effects are stun buildup and damage reflection, both of which are combat mechanics.

The available material does not establish every detail of Red Ant Armor’s behavior from a current official mechanics reference. Therefore, the safe conclusion is limited and specific: Red Ant Armor is described by the guide as the disguise option, while Black Ant Armor is not documented as disguising you from black ants.
What this means when entering the Black Anthill
If your goal is to reach or explore the Black Anthill, treat Black Ant Armor as preparation for fights rather than permission to bypass them. Expect encounters to remain hostile and make decisions accordingly:

- Equip the set when you want its extra stun buildup and reflected-damage effect to contribute during combat.
- Do not assume that matching the ants’ color changes detection, aggro, or nest behavior.
- Leave room in your plan for attacks from both worker and soldier ants.
- Do not use the armor as a substitute for ordinary movement, positioning, healing, or retreat decisions.
The armor can still be a sensible choice for a trip through an ant-populated area because its documented effects are useful once combat begins. That is a very different benefit from being ignored. A player who enters expecting camouflage can be caught off guard; a player who enters expecting a fight can evaluate the set on its actual strengths.
How the two documented effects change combat
Extra stun gauge from attacks
Obsidian’s wording says that all attacks build extra stun gauge. This changes the way your attacks contribute toward an enemy’s stun threshold, but it does not say that ants become passive, that they stop detecting you, or that every attack immediately stuns them. The effect belongs to the combat loop: you still have to attack, manage distance, and survive retaliation.
Because the notes do not provide a numerical percentage in the material available here, no exact stun multiplier should be assumed. The useful interpretation is qualitative: compared with fighting without that effect, successful attacks are intended to advance stun buildup more quickly or more substantially.
Rank #3
Damage reflection through Pincushion
The set bonus reflects a portion of damage dealt back to the attacker. This is retaliation damage, not immunity. An ant that hits you can still hurt you; the bonus simply sends some damage back. The notes do not state the reflected percentage, whether every damage type qualifies, or whether the effect has a cooldown, so those details should not be invented.
That distinction is important in a crowded encounter. Reflection may make trading hits more favorable, but it does not remove the need to avoid attacks. It also does not alter ant allegiance. A reflected hit is evidence that the armor is functioning as a combat set, not that the attacker has accepted you as part of the colony.
A practical decision guide
| Player objective | What Black Ant Armor offers | What it does not offer |
|---|---|---|
| Fight black ants | Extra stun buildup from attacks and reflected damage through Pincushion. | It does not make ants passive or prevent them from attacking. |
| Move through the Black Anthill without combat | No documented stealth or disguise effect. | No guarantee that workers or soldiers will ignore you. |
| Choose an armor for social disguise | The available guide contrasts this set with Red Ant Armor, which it describes as the disguise option. | Black Ant Armor is not documented as a black-ant disguise. |
| Plan around exact numerical bonuses | Official notes identify the effect types. | The supplied documentation does not state percentages, durations, or a current patch-specific multiplier. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating the armor’s name as a faction disguise
Color matching is not the same as disguise. The armor’s documented effects are offensive and retaliatory, so use those descriptions as the source of truth for its role.
Mistake: assuming only black soldier ants are dangerous
The direct guide statement covers both black ants and black soldier ants. Plan for hostility from either type rather than trying to identify which one might overlook you.
Mistake: interpreting “reflect damage” as “take no damage”
Reflection returns part of the damage to the attacker; it does not say that the incoming hit is canceled. Continue to treat attacks as threats.
Rank #4
Mistake: expecting a stun bonus to prevent aggro
Extra stun gauge applies after you attack and affects combat progress. It is not an enemy-recognition mechanic and does not stop an encounter from starting.
Mistake: relying on an old mechanic description as a guaranteed current-version rule
Obsidian’s cited notes come from the game’s 0.11 update period. They establish the effects described there, but they do not by themselves prove that no later patch changed any behavior. The June 2025 guide supplies the direct “they still attack” guidance, but it is also not an official patch-history statement.
What is confirmed, and what remains uncertain
The strongest supported conclusions are narrow:
- Black Ant Armor is associated with the Black Anthill update content.
- Its documented status effect is extra stun gauge from all attacks.
- Its documented set bonus, Pincushion, reflects part of incoming damage to the attacker.
- A June 24, 2025 guide says black ants and black soldier ants remain hostile while you wear it.
Several broader claims are not established by the available material. There is no supported numerical value for the stun increase or reflected-damage portion here. There is no official current-version statement confirming that these mechanics are unchanged after the 0.11 update period. The material also does not provide a complete, current technical description of Red Ant Armor’s disguise rules. Keeping those boundaries clear prevents a useful combat description from being mistaken for a stealth guarantee.
How to use the answer in your own game plan
- Decide whether you are preparing to fight. If you want the armor’s effects, choose it for the extra stun buildup and retaliation damage, not for avoidance.
- Assume both ant types can engage you. Do not walk into the Black Anthill expecting workers to ignore you while only soldiers attack.
- Build a combat plan around the actual bonuses. Look for opportunities where repeated attacks can advance stun buildup and where reflected damage can contribute during exchanges.
- Keep defensive options available. Pincushion returns only part of the damage according to the documented description; it is not a replacement for avoiding hits.
- Recheck patch notes if you need version certainty. The cited official notes are from the 0.11 period, so a later update could theoretically alter behavior. Do not claim a newer version is unchanged without a current source.
Bottom line for Black Anthill runs
Black Ant Armor does not grant diplomatic status with black ants. Black workers and black soldiers remain hostile in the direct guidance available for this question. The set’s purpose is to help you win those encounters: attacks build extra stun gauge, and Pincushion reflects part of the damage you take. Wear it when those combat effects fit your plan, but never count on it to let you pass through the Black Anthill unnoticed.
