Black Flag Resynced vs. the Original: What Actually Changed in Ubisoft’s Remake

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a ground-up remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, not a simple visual remaster. Ubisoft says it keeps the familiar Edward Kenway adventure while rebuilding the game on the latest Anvil Engine, with upgraded mechanics, new content, dynamic lighting and weather, freer underwater exploration, integrated Kenway’s Fleet, and earlier Rope Dart access. The confirmed differences are substantial, but Ubisoft has not published a complete list of every altered mission, scene, balance change, or performance result.

What Black Flag Resynced is—and what this comparison can prove

Ubisoft describes Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced as a remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, rebuilt from the ground up on the latest version of the Anvil Engine. The publisher specifically promises updated visuals, upgraded gameplay mechanics and new content exclusive to the remake. That scope is broader than a texture upgrade, but the available official material is not a line-by-line change log.

The safest way to read the comparison is to separate confirmed announcements from unanswered questions. Ubisoft has clearly documented changes to presentation, exploration, progression, naval support features and several ground-gameplay systems. It has not established that every mission, dialogue scene, enemy encounter, animation, weapon statistic or side activity is identical—or that the remake runs at a particular resolution or frame rate on every platform.

The original game’s core premise remains recognizable: Edward Kenway’s journey through the Caribbean, combining open-world exploration, piracy, stealth, parkour and naval combat. Ubisoft calls the remake a familiar story with expanded material, so returning players should expect the same broad adventure rather than a new continuity. Specific additions are discussed below without presenting Ubisoft’s announcements as an exhaustive inventory.

Story and missions: familiar adventure, expanded material

The remake is built around the same Edward Kenway adventure rather than replacing the protagonist or setting. Ubisoft’s launch coverage presents the story as familiar while also promising new content exclusive to Resynced. That wording supports continuity of the main premise, not a guarantee that every cutscene, objective, encounter or line of dialogue is unchanged.

What you can safely expect

  • The Caribbean pirate-assassin setting and Edward Kenway’s central journey remain the foundation.
  • The remake retains the original’s broad combination of story missions, open-world activities, stealth, parkour and naval play.
  • Ubisoft says additional material exists specifically for Resynced.

What Ubisoft has not itemized

The cited announcements do not enumerate every exclusive quest, revised mission, altered story scene or removed activity. Consequently, claims such as “the entire campaign is unchanged,” “all side missions return exactly as before,” or “the remake adds a specific number of missions” go beyond the established evidence. Treat any detailed mission-by-mission list as provisional unless it is tied to a later Ubisoft announcement or an independently documented playthrough.

Ubisoft’s ground-gameplay deep dive discusses how the remake expands on the original’s play rather than publishing a narrative change log. Read it alongside the launch overview at Ubisoft News’ launch guide and the “Expanding on the Original” deep dive.

Visuals, lighting and weather

Dynamic ray-traced lighting

In the original, Ubisoft characterizes much of the lighting as static and baked into the environment. Resynced replaces that presentation with dynamic ray-traced lighting. In practical terms, the remake is designed to respond to changing conditions rather than displaying only lighting information prepared in advance.

Ray tracing is a rendering feature, not a guaranteed performance target. The cited Ubisoft material does not state resolution, frame-rate modes, ray-tracing settings, hardware requirements, loading times or a performance comparison with the 2013 release. Console and PC results may vary by mode and hardware, so do not infer a specific frame rate from the lighting announcement.

Weather that changes during the day

Ubisoft says weather can shift dynamically over the course of a day, moving from sunny conditions to rain and even hurricane-like conditions. This changes the atmosphere and can alter how the world looks as you travel, but the announcement does not quantify how often transitions occur, whether every region uses the full range, or whether storms affect sailing systems in a measurable way.

These visual and environmental claims come from Ubisoft’s Road to Launch coverage. They are publisher descriptions rather than independent graphics tests.

Underwater exploration: “Dive Anywhere” removes the old restriction

One of the clearest exploration changes is the new Dive Anywhere feature. In the original game, underwater sections were connected to fixed dive locations. Resynced allows Edward to enter the water outside those designated points and explore underwater spaces more freely, including reaching underwater chests.

  • MULTIPLAYER EXPERIENCE: Play with your friends in the ruthless and critically acclaimed multiplayer experience. Choose from an eclectic cast of characters from the Golden Age of Pirates and fight to the death in exotic locations

Why this matters in play

  • You are no longer limited to searching for a marked diving point before entering the water.
  • Coastal exploration can flow directly from sailing or swimming into underwater discovery.
  • Underwater collectibles can be approached as part of general exploration rather than only during a set-piece dive.

Ubisoft does not specify whether every body of water is fully explorable, how far Edward can swim from shore or the ship, or whether all original underwater objectives have been relocated. “Dive Anywhere” should therefore be understood as a confirmed access-system change, not a promise that the entire ocean has identical depth and content.

Ground gameplay: parkour, stealth, combat and difficulty

Parkour and movement

Ubisoft has published a deep dive focused on parkour, stealth and combat, describing Resynced as an expansion of the original’s ground gameplay. The remake’s movement should be read as a revised implementation of familiar systems, not as evidence that the game has adopted a completely different traversal model. The announcement does not provide a full move list, animation-by-animation comparison or measured traversal-speed change.

Light and shadow affect visibility

Resynced makes light and shadow part of Edward’s visibility. This gives stealth situations a clearer environmental component: where you stand in relation to illumination matters, rather than concealment being determined only by a fixed hiding spot or scripted state. Ubisoft confirms the feature but does not publish detection radii, brightness thresholds or enemy-specific rules.

Difficulty can be changed during play

Unlike a difficulty choice that must be locked at the start, Resynced allows the setting to be changed on the fly. That is useful if you want a forgiving story run, need a harder combat test, or discover that a selected setting does not fit your play style. Ubisoft’s announcement does not list the names of every difficulty level or explain whether changing difficulty affects achievements, trophies, rewards or mission ranking.

Hiring Dancers returns

The Hiring Dancers feature from the original is confirmed to return. It remains one of the social-stealth tools available in the ground game, while the cited material does not state whether its costs, duration, AI behavior or mission applications have been rebalanced.

For the confirmed ground-gameplay changes, consult Ubisoft’s parkour, stealth and combat deep dive and the launch coverage linked above.

Naval gameplay and Kenway’s Fleet

The companion-app requirement is gone

The most concrete naval quality-of-life change concerns Kenway’s Fleet. In the original, the feature was tied to a companion app. Ubisoft says that in Resynced it is fully integrated into the game. You can therefore engage with the fleet system from the game itself rather than relying on the old companion-app arrangement.

That change affects access and convenience, not necessarily the fleet system’s underlying objectives or rewards. Ubisoft’s naval deep dive does not, in the cited passage, provide a complete list of revised ship statistics, fleet missions, timers, currencies or balancing changes. Avoid assuming that every naval rule has been redesigned simply because the interface is now integrated.

What remains unresolved about sailing

The official announcements establish the integration change but do not supply platform-specific sailing performance, wave simulation measurements, cannon damage values or a complete comparison of ship upgrades. Those details require the shipped game or a later technical breakdown. The confirmed conclusion is narrower: the fleet-management feature is now available inside Resynced instead of depending on the original companion app.

Ubisoft states this distinction directly in its naval gameplay deep dive.

Progression: the Rope Dart arrives much earlier

Resynced changes one progression milestone that Ubisoft gives precise numbers for: Edward can acquire the Rope Dart at sequence 3, whereas the original places its acquisition at sequence 11. This is an eight-sequence shift, bringing the weapon into the campaign much earlier.

Game Rope Dart availability What the shift changes
Original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Sequence 11 The weapon arrives relatively late in the campaign.
Black Flag Resynced Sequence 3 The Rope Dart is available near the beginning of the story, enabling earlier use where the remake permits it.

The earlier unlock does not by itself prove that every mission was redesigned around the weapon. It does mean returning players should not plan their progression around the original sequence timing. Ubisoft documents the change in its Road to Launch article.

New content: confirmed, but not an exhaustive list

Ubisoft repeatedly describes Resynced as containing new or exclusive content. The product page uses the phrase “new content exclusive to this remake,” while the launch and deep-dive articles discuss additions that expand on the original. That establishes that the remake is not content-identical to the 2013 release.

However, the cited official pages do not publish a complete catalog of new quests, side activities, locations, cinematics or collectibles. A responsible comparison should therefore identify the confirmed additions—such as Dive Anywhere, the integrated fleet system, the earlier Rope Dart unlock and the announced ground-gameplay revisions—without labeling those items the entire list.

If a later Ubisoft page names a specific mission or story scene, evaluate that claim against the exact page and date. Until then, statements that Resynced adds a precise number of hours or quests are not established by the available announcements.

What has not been proven by the official comparison material

Several questions are natural for a remake comparison but remain unanswered by the cited sources:

  • Resolution and frame rate: Ubisoft does not provide measured 30-fps, 60-fps or higher modes for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or PC.
  • Loading times: No before-and-after timing is published.
  • PC requirements: The available product information does not establish minimum or recommended CPU, GPU, memory or storage specifications.
  • Complete mission parity: There is no official checklist proving that every original mission, cutscene and side activity returns unchanged.
  • Removals: The cited announcements do not identify content that was cut.
  • Balance numbers: Weapon damage, enemy health, economy values, ship statistics and detection ranges are not comprehensively documented.
  • Ray-tracing performance cost: The presence of ray-traced lighting does not reveal how much performance it consumes on any platform.

These are evidence limits, not proof that the remake lacks or changes any particular feature. They simply mark where a definitive “every difference” list would require additional documentation or direct testing.

Which version should you choose?

Choose Resynced if you want the modern presentation and integrated systems

  • You are buying your first Black Flag and want the version Ubisoft is positioning as the current remake.
  • Dynamic ray-traced lighting and weather changes matter more to you than preserving the original presentation.
  • You prefer underwater exploration that is not restricted to fixed dive points.
  • You want Kenway’s Fleet available inside the game rather than through the original companion-app arrangement.
  • You would rather access the Rope Dart at sequence 3 than wait for sequence 11.
  • You value the ability to change difficulty during a playthrough.
  • You play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or a PC storefront supported by Ubisoft, including Steam Deck under its Verified designation.

Choose the original if you specifically want its historical release experience

  • You want to experience the 2013 version exactly as it was designed, including its original progression timing and fixed dive locations.
  • You are comparing the remake against the version you already own and want the baseline systems before judging the revisions.
  • You need a platform not listed for Resynced. Ubisoft’s current announcement does not list older consoles, so verify compatibility rather than assuming a port.

There is no evidence-based reason to claim that one version universally has better performance: Ubisoft has not published the platform benchmarks needed for that verdict. The practical choice is between the original structure and the remake’s confirmed systems and presentation upgrades, subject to the platform and edition available in your region.

Bottom line on Black Flag Resynced vs. the original

Black Flag Resynced preserves the recognizable Edward Kenway adventure while changing how the world is rendered, explored and managed. The confirmed upgrades include a new Anvil Engine foundation, dynamic ray-traced lighting, weather that can shift during the day, Dive Anywhere underwater access, in-game Kenway’s Fleet, earlier Rope Dart access at sequence 3, light-and-shadow visibility, adjustable difficulty and the return of Hiring Dancers. Ubisoft also promises exclusive content beyond these named examples.

It is not accurate to describe the remake as a complete mission-for-mission reconstruction with every difference already cataloged. Ubisoft has not supplied exhaustive story changes, a list of removals, or platform performance measurements. For a player deciding between versions, the remake’s clearest advantages are its modernized presentation, integrated fleet feature, freer exploration and revised progression; the original remains the reference point for the older release’s exact structure.
