To complete the Horse Guai quest in Black Myth: Wukong, speak with Ma Tianba in each of the first five chapters, exhaust his dialogue, and return to the Chapter 5 cart after progressing through the Keeper of the Flaming Mountains sequence. Freeing him there rewards the Dark Thunder transformation. Finish the earlier encounters before pulling the cart’s rope: GameSpot reports that pulling it before the Chapter 3 meeting prevented a player from finding Ma Tianba again for the reward.
How the Horse Guai quest works
Horse Guai is Ma Tianba, an optional character whose encounters form a five-chapter sequence. At each stop, speak with him and continue until his dialogue repeats. The Chapter 5 interaction is not the end of the quest: you must advance through the nearby Keeper of the Flaming Mountains progression and then return to the cart.

Guide names for routes and shrines can vary. The chapter and landmark names below identify the route without treating every directional detail as official in-game wording. Shacknews provides the chapter-by-chapter route; GameSpot outlines the reward and rope-order precaution. Black Myth Guide’s September 20, 2026 account reports creator route recordings that cross-check the encounter sequence and final return, rather than developer documentation.
All Horse Guai locations, chapter by chapter
Chapter 1: Bamboo Grove, near Back Hills
- After defeating Lingxuzi, continue toward the pond and nearby enemies.
- Look to the left for a small entrance and go inside to find Ma Tianba.
- Speak with him until the dialogue repeats. A meditation spot is also in this small area.
Chapter 2: Sandgate Village
- Find Ma Tianba tied to a pole in a pavilion in Sandgate Village.
- You can approach from the front or use the right-side approach described by Shacknews.
- Talk to him, but do not expect to free him here; continue after exhausting his dialogue.
Chapter 3: Thunderclap Temple
- Find the large temple building on the left. The route passes a large staircase guarded by enemies that cast lightning.
- Enter the building, go up the staircase on the right, and turn left at the top.
- Speak with Ma Tianba until his dialogue repeats.
Chapter 4: Webbed Hollow
- After the Centipede Guai fight, follow the path upward and to the right.
- Find Ma Tianba inside a large cocoon, break it, and speak with him until his dialogue repeats.
Chapter 5: Furnace Valley
- Near the Valley Entrance Shrine, go to the bottom of the area and find the inert cart.
- Interact with the whip or rope until the dialogue repeats. If you have not completed the earlier meetings, stop here and do them before pulling the rope.
- Advance through the nearby Keeper of the Flaming Mountains sequence and defeat the Keeper.
- Return to the cart and free Ma Tianba’s spirit to receive the Dark Thunder transformation.
Important Chapter 5 order: finish the earlier meetings first
Do not treat pulling the cart rope as a harmless first step if you still have earlier encounters to complete. GameSpot reports a playthrough where pulling it before the Chapter 3 meeting meant the player could not find Ma Tianba again to obtain the reward. The reported risk is specifically tied to that order; completing all prior conversations before interacting with the rope is the safer route.
