Black Myth: Wukong is one of the lowest-rated nominees in The Game Awards’ Game of the Year category, but the evidence does not establish it as the single lowest. Metacritic’s awards tracker lists it at 81/100, and a historical comparison of nominees since the show began in 2014 describes the “lowest-rated” claim as mostly true—with an important exception involving PUBG and OpenCritic.

On Metacritic’s current PC game page, the 81 Metascore is based on 87 critic reviews and is labeled “Generally Favorable.” The page separately shows an 8.2 user score from 8,504 ratings when accessed in 2026. These are different aggregates: the Metascore reflects critic reviews, while the user score reflects player ratings, and the rating count can change. Metacritic’s Black Myth: Wukong page displays both.
Is it the lowest-rated Game Awards GOTY nominee ever?
Not definitively. A historical comparison reported by Arcader News, reproducing Polygon’s review of Metacritic and OpenCritic scores for The Game Awards’ GOTY nominees since the ceremony began in 2014, calls the claim “mostly true.” It also flags PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) as an OpenCritic outlier: the comparison reports a 77 OpenCritic score against an 86 Metacritic score for PUBG. That makes the answer dependent in part on which aggregator is used. Arcader News’ reproduction of the comparison is a secondary account, not a new score calculation.

The phrase “one of the lowest-rated” is therefore more accurate than calling Wukong the record-holder. The comparison does not provide detailed score histories, so it cannot establish that current aggregator scores exactly match the scores available when each game was nominated. The historical claim should be read as a broad comparison, not a precise nomination-day ranking.

- Scope: The claim concerns the annual Game of the Year nominees at The Game Awards, whose first ceremony was held in 2014. It does not cover every publication or organization’s GOTY award.
- Measure: The 81 is a critic aggregate, not an objective measure of a game’s quality or an explanation of why the jury nominated it.
- Audience reception: Metacritic’s separate user score is favorable, but it should not be combined with or substituted for the critic Metascore.
- Fair comparisons: A rigorous ranking would use the same award category, aggregator, score-capture date, and treatment of full games versus expansions or downloadable content for every nominee.
In short, the available comparison supports describing Black Myth: Wukong as one of The Game Awards’ lower-rated GOTY nominees. It does not support an unqualified claim that it is the lowest-rated nominee across all aggregators, all award programs, or every point in time.
