Black Myth: Wukong shares recognizable Soulslike conventions—dodge-focused boss fights, checkpoints, respawning enemies and limited healing—but the label only goes so far. Game Science describes it as an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology, and its six-chapter, mostly linear journey puts spectacular encounters and a distinctive spell-and-transformation toolkit ahead of the interconnected exploration many players expect from a Soulslike.
What kind of game is Black Myth: Wukong?
Steam lists Black Myth: Wukong as a single-player action RPG based on Journey to the West, with Game Science as developer and publisher. Its PC release date was 19 August 2024. The store description calls it “an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology.” Steam’s listing also includes a user-defined “Souls-like” tag, but that tag is a player-facing classification, not a definitive genre ruling.

The Soulslike comparison is useful if it points to specific mechanics. It becomes misleading if it implies the same level structure, combat systems or difficulty curve as a conventional FromSoftware-style game. The reviews by PC Gamer and GameSpot emphasize different aspects of that divide.
Where the Soulslike comparison fits
- Bosses reward pattern learning. Players dodge attacks, learn enemy timing and adjust their approach to demanding encounters.
- Checkpoints and respawns are familiar. Resting at checkpoints and returning after a defeat, with enemies repopulating, will feel recognizable to Soulslike players.
- Healing is limited. GameSpot describes a finite number of healing charges, adding pressure to longer fights.
Those conventions help explain why players make the comparison. GameSpot also highlights dodge timing and limited spell-based parrying. But the game’s central combat choices include spells, transformations and magical vessels drawn from its mythological setting—not simply a recreation of the equipment and systems associated with other games in the genre. Steam’s official description lists spells and transformations among its iconic combat elements.

Where the label falls short
Boss encounters take priority over exploration
GameSpot describes six chapters with frequent Yaoguai encounters and an overall experience closer to a boss rush than an exploration-led Soulslike. Its review found some stretches between major fights sparse, and it criticized aspects of traversal. PC Gamer, by contrast, praised the game’s world and characters, with reviewer Tyler Colp writing, “Wukong is one of the most joyful action RPGs I’ve played simply for how lovingly it treats its world and characters.” That praise is a critical judgment, not a claim that every route is equally engaging.
Routes are mostly linear
GameSpot argues that the level design is one of the clearest reasons not to treat Wukong as a conventional Soulslike. Its progression is mostly linear rather than built around the kind of interconnected exploration some players associate with the genre. GameSpot summarized that point: “This is none more obvious than in the game’s level design.” Its review also reported frustration with traversal and invisible walls.

The combat has its own identity
Dodging and reading attacks matter, but so do choosing when to use spells and transformations and responding to a particular enemy with the tools available. PC Gamer called the game clearly inspired by Dark Souls while arguing that “soulslike” alone does not capture its distinctive feel. The disagreement between reviewers is less about whether familiar conventions exist than about whether those conventions define the whole experience.
Is Black Myth: Wukong hard?
Expect difficulty to vary, especially around bosses. PC Gamer characterized the game as more playful and approachable than the punishing Soulslike stereotype, while GameSpot found much of the experience manageable but described late-game bosses as significant threats. Those accounts are compatible: a game can feel accessible across many encounters and still contain sharp difficulty spikes.

What reviewers said about performance
PC Gamer’s August 2024 review reported that poor performance contributed to deaths on its review setup: an RTX 4090, Intel Core i9-12900K and 16GB of RAM. The reviewer also praised the world and combat. This describes one reviewer’s experience with a 2024 review build; it is not a current benchmark or a reliable prediction for every PC configuration. How was it received on Steam?
Steam’s store snapshot accessed on 4 October 2026 showed 93% positive among 71,340 English-language user reviews and 90% positive among 2,611 reviews from the last 30 days. These are changing Steam user-rating figures, not critic scores or a study of all players. Check the live Steam listing for ratings that may have changed.
Which platforms can you play it on?
Steam confirms a PC version. A non-official community archive lists PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and gives the Xbox release as one year after the PC and PS5 release. Because that archive is not an official platform store, verify the edition and current regional availability in the relevant official store before buying. The information here does not establish a specific physical edition, price, stock status or current store listing.
