That is a practical order for learning and adapting—not an objective damage ranking. The best stance in a particular fight is the one that turns that enemy’s openings into reliable punishes.
How the stances rank for general use
This ranking weighs how easily a stance converts common openings into attacks, and how much commitment or positioning it demands. It is not based on measured damage, win rates, or a controlled performance test.

The current matchup guide recommends choosing around the opening rather than treating one stance as best for every fight. Epic Games Store’s guide similarly describes Smash as aggressive, Pillar as a way to avoid ground attacks, and Thrust as defense- and counter-oriented. Smash: the best stance to learn first
Smash is the default stance and the most sensible general-purpose starting point. Its flurry of blows supports an aggressive approach, and its simple dodge-to-punish loop means you can focus on reading an enemy’s timing rather than solving a more specialized spacing problem.

Use it when an opening is close enough to reach, but do not assume every recovery window is long enough for a full attack sequence. Spend Focus when a hit is realistic; if the enemy is moving away or about to attack again, a shorter punish or a reset may be safer than committing further.
Pillar: answer ground pressure and unsafe proximity
Try Pillar when ground attacks, low sweeps, or dangerous close positioning keep interrupting your normal punish. Hopping onto the staff can help avoid attacks that threaten the ground, making this stance a situational answer rather than a universal upgrade.

Its commitment is the trade-off. Watch how the enemy behaves during your descent: if it changes direction unpredictably or punishes the landing, Pillar may leave you exposed. Use it when you can identify a ground-pressure pattern it solves, not simply because an attempt with Smash failed.
Thrust: solve reach and alignment problems
Thrust is useful when an enemy retreats or an opening appears just beyond the reach of your usual punish. Epic’s guide characterizes it as defense- and counter-oriented; it also describes Tactical Retreat, in which a backstep after light attacks can be followed by a heavy attack.

That spacing advantage depends on a clear lane. A target that changes direction, a cramped arena, or a poorly aligned opening can turn reach into a miss. Choose Thrust when distance is consistently costing you damage and you can line up the attack—not just because the stance is labeled a counter style.
Choose by the opening, not by a fixed tier list
Before committing to a stance in a fight, identify what is preventing a safe punish. The useful questions are opening distance, ground pressure, alignment, commitment, and whether you can reliably land a hit when spending Focus.

- The opening is close and brief: Start with Smash and favor the punish you can complete safely.
- Ground attacks make close punishment unsafe: Test Pillar against that specific pattern and watch for counters during the descent.
- The enemy keeps retreating: Try Thrust when you have enough room and a clear line to connect.
- You are unsure: Return to the stance whose timing you can read most reliably; changing stance is not a substitute for learning the opening.
Spell choice can also shape the plan. The matchup guide recommends Immobilize for close cashouts, Cloud Step to create a safer re-entry, and Rock Solid for a counter-focused approach. Treat these as tactical suggestions, not guaranteed build results.

Build familiarity with Smash first, then invest in a second stance when you can name the matchup problem it addresses. Spreading Sparks across options you rarely use can leave you with more choices but no practiced answer.

- Make Smash your primary stance: Practice recognizing openings and choosing a punish you can land without overcommitting.
- Add Pillar for a pattern you have identified: The Black Myth Guide says Pillar becomes available after Spark investment at level 5. This is that guide’s stated progression threshold, not a level independently confirmed by Epic’s guide; check the in-game skill tree if your version differs.
- Add Thrust when reach is a recurring problem: The same guide says Thrust becomes available after Spark investment at level 20. As with Pillar, treat this as the guide’s threshold and verify it in-game if needed.
- Switch with a purpose: Keep a stance when it solves a recurring issue; do not rotate after every failed attempt without first identifying why the punish missed.
Epic’s guide says Sparks are earned on level-up or the first interaction with a Meditation Spot, and that skill points can be refunded. Its article does not independently verify the stance unlock thresholds above. Epic Games Store: skills, Sparks, and refunds.
Why a universal “best stance” claim is misleading
An undated page on blackmwukong.com calls Thrust “generally considered the best overall,” but does not identify who holds that view or explain a comparative method. A matchup-based ranking is more useful: Thrust can be the right choice for retreating targets, while Smash or Pillar can better suit other openings. No comparative statistic or controlled stance-performance figure is established by the cited guides.
