That was a launch-day milestone, not its all-time Steam peak: SteamDB’s historical chart records a higher peak of 2,415,714 concurrent players on 22 August 2024.
What was Black Myth: Wukong’s Steam peak on its first day?
The game had more than 2.2 million concurrent players on Steam on 20 August 2024, according to Guinness World Records. TechNode also reported the milestone on 21 August 2024, describing it as more than 2.2 million simultaneous Steam players on release evening.
“Concurrent” means people playing at the same time. It is not a count of everyone who played that day, unique players, copies sold, or players across every platform.
Was 2.2 million the game’s all-time record?
No. SteamDB’s historical chart records Black Myth: Wukong’s all-time Steam peak as 2,415,714 concurrent players on 22 August 2024, two days after release. The launch-day figure and the later peak describe different points in the game’s first week.
SteamDB is a third-party statistics tracker, not Valve or Steam. Its chart also records the Steam release time as 01:58:28 UTC on 20 August 2024. See SteamDB’s chart for Black Myth: Wukong.
What the Steam player count does—and does not—measure
The 2.2 million figure refers specifically to simultaneous users on Steam. The game also launched on PlayStation 5, WeGame, and Epic, as reported by TechNode, but those platforms are not included in Steam’s concurrent-player count.

It also should not be read as a sales figure. Guinness World Records separately records 20 million copies sold by 20 September 2024. That dated sales milestone is distinct from the Steam concurrency records.
On launch day, Game Developer reported that developer and publisher Game Science had not disclosed how PC player numbers translated into sales. That was the information reported at the time, not a statement about what the company may have disclosed since. Game Developer’s 20 August 2024 report covered the launch-period figures.
