Black Myth: Wukong was reported complete on August 6, 2024, with its release still on schedule. That is the milestone commonly described as a game “going gold,” but the available repost does not establish that Game Science itself used those exact words. The game then launched globally on August 20, 2024.
What did “gone gold” mean for Black Myth: Wukong?
In game development, “gone gold” traditionally means a release build has been finalized for manufacturing or distribution. It marks a production milestone, not a promise that a game will never receive patches or updates.

On August 6, 2024, a Reddit post reproduced a statement attributed to Game Science saying that full development was complete and that the game would be released as scheduled. Because the original developer post has not been authenticated here, the wording supports the completion-and-schedule claim, but does not verify that Game Science called the milestone “gone gold.” The repost is secondary evidence.
When did Black Myth: Wukong release?
Game Science’s official Steam announcement set the global release for August 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM Beijing time (UTC+8). On launch day, Hero Games also announced that the game was launching globally. The original platform list was PS5, Steam, Epic Games Store, and WeGame. Game Science’s Steam announcement and Hero Games’ launch announcement provide the release context.

What kind of game is it?
Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. PlayStation’s description highlights staff techniques, spells, abilities, weapons, and equipment as parts of its combat. See the PlayStation game page.
Was there a physical PS5 edition at launch?
No. The August 2024 release announcement described digital editions; a PS5 physical edition was announced later, in October 2024. That later disc release should not be confused with the original digital launch. Game Science’s June announcement distinguished the digital editions by their included content:
