The July 2026 PlayStation releases of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops II produced a strong nostalgia signal. Analyst estimates put combined PlayStation sales at about 11.2 million units and roughly $435 million in revenue, while both games appeared in Circana’s U.S. PlayStation top 10 for weekly active users. That supports the description of “pent-up demand,” but Activision has not publicly announced a strategy to return to the “good old days.”
What launched on July 9, 2026
Treyarch released digital PS4/PS5 versions of the original Black Ops (2010) and Black Ops II (2012) on July 9, 2026. The editions are sold as current-PlayStation products, so owners no longer need a connected PS3 to play these entries on a Sony console.

Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies are included
Treyarch’s follow-up announcement says both releases include the three original pillars: Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies. They are not multiplayer-only packages or stripped-down compatibility releases.

- -Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- -This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Price and online requirement
The official PlayStation Store listing for Black Ops shows a $39.99 price before discounts. Storefront prices can change, so check the live listing before buying. The same listing requires PlayStation Plus for online play, supports up to 18 online players and states that cross-platform multiplayer with non-PlayStation platforms is not supported.
Did the ports really sell millions?
The widely cited figures are analyst estimates, not Activision’s reported sales. Rhys Elliott of Alinea estimated 8.2 million PlayStation units for Black Ops II and 3.0 million for Black Ops, or approximately $435 million in combined revenue.
Rank #2
- Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower.
- This is signature Black Ops across a cinematic single-player Campaign, a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, and the epic return of Round-Based Zombies.
- The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.
- In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.
- Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
| Game | Estimated PlayStation units | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Black Ops | 3.0 million | Rhys Elliott/Alinea estimate, 2026 |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops II | 8.2 million | Rhys Elliott/Alinea estimate, 2026 |
| Combined | 11.2 million | Approximate total derived from those estimates |
There is a separate engagement signal: Circana placed both ports in its U.S. PlayStation top 10 by total weekly active users for the week ending July 11, 2026. That measures activity, not units sold, and it covers the United States rather than the global market.
Why analysts describe the demand as “pent-up”
PlayStation owners had no native PS4/PS5 editions of the first two Black Ops games before this release. Xbox players could use backward compatibility, leaving PlayStation with a notable catalog gap. The new ports combined a famous 2010–2012 high point for the series with the convenience of current hardware and digital distribution.
Rank #3
- Wide array of play modes including single player, local multiplayer versus and online co-op and multiplayer
- Seventh installment of the Call of Duty series, based on the live fire conflicts of the Cold War era
- Diverse variety of play setting ranging from urban air and ground combat in SE Asia, to snow combat in Soviet region and jungle combat
- Blending of traditional COD and new first-person character scenarios designed to both retain the essence of the COD gaming experience and ensure constantly flowing and varied action
- New arsenal of weapons and vehicles tied to the Cold War era, including the SR-71 Blackbird and sited explosive-tipped crossbows
Some of the enthusiasm also reflects frustration with newer live-service design, but that is an interpretation of the audience response rather than a measured cause. GameSpot reported Elliott’s description of the result as: “That pent-up demand DETONATED.” It is analyst language, not a quotation from Activision.
Are these remasters or straightforward ports?
They are closer to original-version ports with resolution improvements than to comprehensive remasters. Buyers should expect the original content and structure, not rebuilt character models, redesigned environments or a modernized feature set.
Rank #4
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
| Area | What the PS4/PS5 editions provide | What they do not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Presentation | Resolution improvements over the original console releases | A full asset rebuild or remake-level visual overhaul |
| Modes | Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies in both games | A newly designed campaign or new Zombies story |
| Access | Digital play on PS4 and PS5 | Cross-platform multiplayer with non-PlayStation systems |
| Online ecosystem | Current PlayStation matchmaking | Freedom from legacy exploits, cheating or population issues |
What online players need to know
PlayStation Plus is required
Online multiplayer requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription according to the official Black Ops listing. Campaign and other offline-capable content do not use that online requirement.
Non-PlayStation cross-play is unavailable
The listing expressly rules out cross-platform multiplayer with non-PlayStation platforms. The games are sold as PS4/PS5 products, but the cited listing information does not establish whether every mode uses cross-generation matchmaking between PS4 and PS5 users. Do not assume a particular cross-gen lobby behavior without checking the current support information or the in-game matchmaking screen.
Best Value
- This renewed game may come repackaged in a generic case. It has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Legacy issues still matter
Coverage has reported input-lag complaints, old exploits and cheating. Separate DLC purchases can divide the matchmaking pool, and PS4/PS5 population fragmentation can make finding suitable lobbies less consistent. Those limitations are especially relevant if online play is the main reason to buy.
What the release may have taught Activision
The commercial lesson is narrower than a confirmed new corporate strategy. These ports did not need a remake-sized feature list to become attractive; they made a beloved catalog gap purchasable on hardware many players already own. The combination of recognizable campaigns, classic Zombies and an established multiplayer identity appears to have converted nostalgia into substantial activity and analyst-estimated sales.
That does not prove Activision will abandon current live-service releases or that every older title would perform similarly. It shows that a low-friction route to a specific part of the series’ history can reach a large PlayStation audience when the original games were previously inconvenient to access.

- Players who want the original campaigns or Zombies: The required modes are included without needing the original PS3 hardware.
- Players seeking modern visuals: Expect resolution improvements, not a rebuilt remaster.
- Players focused on multiplayer: Factor in PlayStation Plus, the lack of non-PlayStation cross-play, possible DLC pool fragmentation and reported technical or cheating complaints.
- Collectors who already own PS3 discs: The value is convenience on PS4/PS5 rather than a fundamentally different version of the games.
The ports therefore validate strong interest in the classic Black Ops catalog without establishing that Activision has formally committed to a broader return to its past.
