Updated for the completed 2025 rollout: Black Ops 6 Season 02 introduced The Tomb on January 28, 2025, alongside announced Zombies quality-of-life changes including party-wide pause and AFK rejoin recovery. The Tomb’s guided Directed Mode came later, with Season 02 Reloaded on February 20.
When did Season 2 and The Tomb launch?
Activision announced Season 02 on January 22, 2025, and set its launch for January 28 at 9 a.m. PT. The Tomb was the season’s new Zombies map, planned for that launch. Season 02 Reloaded followed on February 20 at 9 a.m. PT, bringing The Tomb’s Directed Mode and the limited-time Cowabunga Cranked mode. These are 2025 release dates, not upcoming launch plans. What is The Tomb?
The Tomb is set in a cursed archaeological dig and its underground catacombs, following the events of Citadelle des Morts. Weaver, Maya, Carver and Grey take the amulet secured at the Citadel to the site in search of the Sentinel Artifact. They hope it can help free Samantha Maxis from the Dark Aether. Activision’s map announcement describes a subterranean temple, ossuary, tombs and a Doorway to Nowhere.
New threats and tools
- Shock Mimic: This enemy can disguise itself as a useful item, then attack at close range and disrupt players’ radar and vision.
- Staff of Ice: The new Wonder Weapon uses frost to slow or freeze enemies, has an area attack, and can revive a teammate at range with a precision restorative blast.
- Arrow Traps: These traps fire damaging energy darts.
- Aetheric Lanterns: Hitting them with the right projectile can spread Aetheric fire.
The season announcement also listed Death Perception, with new Augments, for The Tomb, Citadelle des Morts, Terminus and Liberty Falls. Three GobbleGums—Dead Drop, Modified Chaos and Quacknarok—and the War Machine support weapon were also announced.

The Tomb’s Main Quest was planned to be available with the map. Activision announced an “X91 Ice-Pike” Wonder Weapon skin, 5,000 XP and a unique Calling Card for completing the quest before Directed Mode arrived. The 5,000 XP is a quest reward, not a gameplay statistic.
Which co-op and menu quality-of-life changes were announced?
Party-wide pause
When every player in a match is in the same party, the party leader can pause the match for the group. This is a shared party feature; the announcement does not describe it as a pause any player can trigger in any public match.

Rejoin after an AFK kick
A player kicked for inactivity in a co-op match can rejoin the ongoing game with their loadout, Essence and Salvage restored. That recovery happens after rejoining; it is separate from pausing the match.
Challenge tracking and HUD presets
The announcement also described selecting a weapon camo or Calling Card challenge and adding it to tracking from the menu, as well as per-mode HUD preset settings. These were framed as Season 02 improvements; Activision did not say that every improvement would arrive on launch day. The quality-of-life announcement gives the feature details.

How does Directed Mode differ from the regular Main Quest?
The Main Quest was planned for The Tomb’s launch. Directed Mode was a later addition in Season 02 Reloaded: it guides players through the Main Quest and caps rounds at 15. That makes it a guided route through the quest, distinct from the launch version rather than a launch-day feature. The Reloaded announcement also introduced Cowabunga Cranked, a limited-time mode on Terminus, Liberty Falls, Citadelle des Morts and The Tomb. In that mode, eliminating zombies keeps a countdown from reaching zero; the timer shrinks as rounds progress. Pizza power-ups and a Field Upgrade that pauses the timer for a minute were included.
