Start with Tutorial, then try your character in Training and Challenge. At character select, choose Stylish for simplified inputs or Technical to practice the standard manual inputs. Button labels differ by platform, so check your in-game button settings before following any control notation.
How to get started
The official Nintendo Switch manual points new players toward three useful learning modes. They work well as a progression, but you can visit them in any order.

- Tutorial: Learn fundamentals of 2D fighting games and BlazBlue-specific systems.
- Training: Practice actions and situations repeatedly. The manual describes the mode generally; it does not enumerate every setting.
- Challenge: Work through character-specific missions focused on command inputs and combos.
Once you have tried a character in practice, choose a match mode that suits what you want to do next.

The game offers both choices at character select. Stylish simplifies execution; Technical uses the standard manual-input approach. Neither is automatically the right choice for everyone.

These descriptions come from the official Nintendo Switch manual. Stylish is an accessible way to explore a character; if your goal is to learn manual inputs, Technical gives you that practice.
How controls and notation work
The arcade control description uses eight directions and four main buttons: weak, medium, strong, and a character-specific Drive button. It assumes the character faces right when describing directions, and notes that arcade cabinet layouts can differ. Think of directions relative to your character: “forward” points toward the opponent, and “back” points away. When a move notation uses attack letters, match them to the labels shown by your own platform’s button map.

For example, the official PlayStation manual maps □ to weak/A, △ to medium/B, ○ to strong/C, and × to Drive/D. It also lists Taunt, SP, FN1, and FN2, and says you can change mappings in Options. These PlayStation symbols are not universal: PC, Switch, and arcade controls may use different labels or layouts. Check your game’s displayed button settings rather than copying another platform’s symbols.

Basic match rules
The objective is to reduce the opponent’s life gauge to zero. A normal match goes to the first player to win two rounds, and the default round timer is 99 seconds. If time expires, the player with more life wins. You can change the number of rounds and time limit in Options. These rules and the default timer are described in the official Nintendo Switch manual.
What the game modes are for
After practice, choose a mode based on whether you want story, a self-contained match, a challenge, or online play. The mode descriptions below follow the official Nintendo Switch manual.

Ranked and Player Match are the manual’s network-mode categories. The manual does not establish current matchmaking population, service availability, or match quality, so check the game and platform’s current online status if those conditions matter to you.
How much of the combat system should you learn first?
The official manual identifies tutorial material on game rules, basic controls, and BlazBlue-specific systems, but the available official descriptions here do not establish detailed operations for individual mechanics such as exact Overdrive timing, Barrier resource costs, character-specific Drive behavior, combo scaling, or frame data. Use the in-game Tutorial to learn the concepts it covers, then consult the full manual for your platform if you need specific technical instructions. Avoid assuming one character’s Drive or one platform’s controls describe the whole game.
