Blizzard announced Diablo II: Resurrected at BlizzConline on February 19, 2021, as a remaster of Diablo II and its Lord of Destruction expansion. The game later launched on September 23, 2021, for PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Blizzard described rebuilt visuals up to 4K, remastered 7.1 Dolby Surround audio and selected quality-of-life changes while retaining the original gameplay.

When did it release?
Diablo II: Resurrected launched on September 23, 2021. Blizzard’s launch guide listed digital purchase routes through Battle.net for Windows PC, Xbox Games Store, PlayStation Store and Nintendo Store. The announcement’s planned platform list therefore became the supported launch platform families.
Is there a physical edition?
No. Blizzard said the game is available digitally only, with no physical version. That means there is no boxed Switch game to buy; players need the relevant platform and a digital copy. A physical console is separate hardware, not a physical edition of the game. Blizzard’s launch guide confirms both the digital-only format and the storefronts.

What did the remaster promise—and what changed?
Blizzard’s 2021 release announcement presented the visual and audio work as a modernization of the original game, alongside selective convenience changes rather than a replacement of its core gameplay.
- Visuals: support for resolutions up to 4K, as specified by Blizzard. This is a product specification, not an independent performance test or a guarantee that every platform runs at 4K.
- Audio: remastered 7.1 Dolby Surround audio, also a Blizzard specification.
- Quality of life: a larger stash and automatic gold pickup were highlighted as changes.
- Core game: Blizzard said the original gameplay was preserved while these updates were added.

The launch options span several storefronts. A practical choice is to use hardware you already own and the store tied to that platform; Switch is the listed option for handheld play.
| Platform family | Launch digital store | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Battle.net | PC version listed at launch. |
| Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One | Xbox Games Store | Both Xbox generations appeared in Blizzard’s platform list. |
| PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 | PlayStation Store | Both PlayStation generations appeared in Blizzard’s platform list. |
| Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Store | The listed handheld-capable platform; the game itself is digital-only. |
Blizzard’s pre-launch FAQ described cross-progression across PC, Xbox and PlayStation systems. Cross-progression concerns carrying progress between supported platforms; it is not the same as cross-platform multiplayer. The cited FAQ does not establish that players on every platform can join the same multiplayer session. These are launch-era statements, not confirmation of the current online service state. Blizzard’s pre-launch FAQ documented the feature.
What did Blizzard say about multiplayer?
The launch-era FAQ said a game could support up to eight players. Treat that as the documented session limit at launch, not as a live guarantee about servers, matchmaking or current availability. The FAQ’s cross-progression information likewise should not be confused with cross-play support.
What is known about the game now?
The announcement and launch materials establish the 2021 release date, launch platforms, digital-only distribution and Blizzard’s stated feature set. They do not verify 2026 patch status, regional store listings or whether online services and cross-progression remain available today. Check the relevant platform store and Blizzard support information for current service and availability details.
