The restoration was complete by July 23 and covered characters that remained on their Hardcore realm. It was not Blizzard’s first announced DDoS-related restoration: the company described similar actions in March 2025 and January 2026.
What Blizzard restored after the July 2026 attacks
Blizzard community representative Kaivax said that “three Classic Hardcore realms in North America were impacted by a malicious DDoS attack” on July 21, resulting in the deaths of some player-characters. Two days later, Blizzard said it had restored the dead characters lost during the attack timeframe who remained on their Hardcore realm, and that the work was complete. Blizzard’s July 23 announcement does not name the realms or say how many characters died or were restored.
The post describes restoring individual characters, not rewinding the realms or their world state. “Rollback” would therefore overstate what Blizzard announced.
Who qualified for restoration?
For the July incident, Blizzard’s stated condition was that a character had died during the DDoS timeframe and remained on its Hardcore realm. Blizzard’s earlier policy update also said characters transferred to Normal (PvE) realms would not receive future DDoS-related restores; characters already transferred to Normal could be returned to Hardcore in their prior state under the policy described in that post. The March 28, 2025 policy post set out that distinction.

- Great product!
The July announcement does not explain how to appeal a missed restoration or provide a process for characters outside its stated eligibility. Individual forum posts asking about a particular death or transfer do not establish a broader policy. In March 2025, Blizzard also asked players not to contact Customer Support about Hardcore deaths, saying Support could not assist in that incident context; that guidance should not be treated as a fresh instruction for every later incident.
Why “for the first time” is inaccurate
Blizzard had already announced DDoS-related Hardcore character restorations before July 2026. The incidents differ in date, scope, and wording:

| Announcement | Incident and scope | Restoration details |
|---|---|---|
| March 28, 2025 | Blizzard said it had begun resurrecting characters lost in recent DDoS attacks, initially focusing on deaths from March 24 and expanding review to confirmed incidents after that date. | Blizzard said future DDoS restores would apply only to characters remaining on their Hardcore realm; transferred characters would not be restored. |
| January 4–5, 2026 | Blizzard reported a malicious DDoS attack on North American realm Doomhowl on January 4. | Blizzard said it restored characters who died during the attack and remained on Doomhowl. The January announcement does not establish that all DDoS incidents receive identical treatment. |
| July 21–23, 2026 | Blizzard reported attacks affecting three North American Classic Hardcore realms on July 21. | Blizzard said restoration was complete for eligible deaths during the attack timeframe when the character remained on its Hardcore realm. |
These announcements make the July action another documented restoration, not the first. They are Blizzard’s own statements about its response; they do not independently verify the attack’s technical details or establish a universal rule for every incident.
