World of Warcraft housing was announced for Midnight, with Early Access scheduled for December 2, 2025, and the expansion’s full launch for March 2, 2026. Those dates have passed. Blizzard’s announcements explain the intended rollout and design, but do not establish the current status of every feature or access rule.
When did WoW housing arrive?
Blizzard announced Housing as a major feature of World of Warcraft: Midnight. Its November 26, 2025 announcement set Housing Early Access for December 2, 2025, for players who had added any edition of Midnight; the expansion’s worldwide launch was scheduled for March 2, 2026. Blizzard reported on December 3 that the pre-expansion update was live and eligible accounts could enter Housing Early Access. Because those dates have passed, they describe the announced rollout, not a current guarantee of availability or entitlement. The available announcements do not verify every later change or the exact live access rules as of October 2026.
Do you need Midnight to get a house?
Blizzard’s announced requirement for Housing Early Access was to add any edition of Midnight. The early-access description included joining a neighborhood, choosing a house, and customizing it. Players without the expansion were described as able to start collecting decor through activities, achievements, and vendors; that collection access was not the same as access to claim or customize a house.

Blizzard’s December 2025 update identified public neighborhoods and guild neighborhoods. It does not establish a complete comparison of their current rules, nor does it answer all account-entitlement questions beyond the announced early-access requirement.
What was the housing design meant to offer?
In its February 5, 2025 first look, Blizzard described Housing as a creative and social feature intended to make a home in Azeroth broadly accessible. The design statement was: “Most players should want a house in Azeroth, and if a player wants a house in Azeroth, they can have a house in Azeroth.” Blizzard also described persistent neighborhoods, intended to let players remain neighbors over time.

The initial plan named two housing zones for launch: one Alliance and one Horde, with the possibility of more locations later. These are the plans stated in the February 2025 design introduction, not a definitive inventory of zones in the live game. Blizzard’s first look at Housing explains those principles and plans.
How are housing decorations earned, and what is Hearthsteel?
Blizzard’s February 2025 overview described hundreds of earnable decorations and house customizations, alongside a smaller number of shop items. In a November 2025 explanation, Blizzard said the “vast majority” of Housing items were and would continue to be earnable in-game, while a small fraction would be available in the shop. That is Blizzard’s stated policy at the time, not a guarantee about future shop inventory.

Blizzard described Hearthsteel as a virtual currency purchased with Battle.net balance and used to buy Housing items. It also described a Housing Catalog for previewing items, including temporary placement previews. See Blizzard’s Hearthsteel explanation for the details it announced.

In February 2026, Blizzard called Housing an evergreen feature and discussed possible work for launch and beyond. It cautioned that the features described were in development and could change, move in priority, be delayed, or be cut. Those roadmap ideas should not be treated as confirmed current functionality without a later status update. Blizzard’s Housing look-ahead sets out that qualification.

Blizzard’s January 2026 recap called Housing a “feature twenty years in the making.” That is Blizzard’s characterization, rather than an independently measured statistic for the time between the game’s debut and the release of Housing. The recap uses that phrasing.
