The company said most of those accounts were permanently banned. The figure counts accounts, not verified individual people, and is a historical total reported in that update—not a current lifetime total.
What Blizzard reported
In its April 2023 Defense Matrix update, Blizzard Entertainment said it had penalized over 100,000 accounts worldwide for using cheats since Overwatch 2 launched. It named aimbots and wallhacks as examples and said most of the accounts had been permanently banned. Blizzard’s wording was: “Since the launch of Overwatch 2, we’ve penalized over 100,000 accounts worldwide that were found to be using a variety of cheats, including ‘aimbots’ and ‘wallhacks’—in most cases, these accounts have been permanently banned.” Read Blizzard’s Defense Matrix update.
The announcement reports Blizzard’s enforcement figure; it is not an independent audit. It does not establish how many unique people were involved, how Blizzard’s detections were verified, or how many penalties were later overturned.
How Blizzard described its ban waves
In the same update, Blizzard said its regular ban waves often affected up to 5,000 accounts per week and described a significant wave targeting popular, widely used hacks. That figure is Blizzard’s reported cadence at the time, not a verified rate for later years or a separate current estimate.

How players can help address cheating
Blizzard described player reports as one of the most effective ways to help identify cheaters. It also said it took account action against players found cheating by grouping or queueing with players using hacks. The update does not provide a separate count for actions related to grouping or queueing.
- Report suspected cheating through Overwatch 2’s in-game reporting tools.
- Describe the behavior you observed rather than assuming a particular cheat or outcome.
- Do not treat grouping with a suspected cheater as proof on its own; Blizzard’s statement refers to players it found to be cheating by grouping or queueing with hackers.
What the 100,000 figure does—and does not—mean
The total is a cumulative account-penalty figure Blizzard reported in April 2023, covering the period since Overwatch 2 launched. “Most” of those accounts were permanently banned, according to Blizzard, but the company did not give a percentage. The update does not support claims about Blizzard’s current total, the number of individual cheaters, a false-positive rate, or today’s weekly enforcement pace.
